Title: cant get out of bed on time
Post by: next2u on June 09, 2011, 10:44:52 pm
okay, so im lazy and love sleeping in. but now that shit is starting to get me in trouble as i show up at work later and later.

my half asleep brain has figured how to turn off the alarm. something like "baby, you are comfortable, you know you got 5 more minutes, just sleep a little more" convinces my half asleep ass to hit the snooze. after hitting my snooze for like an hour i finally get up and freak out!

i have couple of different things i want to try and i was wondering if anyone had any practical advice for losers like myself who can't get the fuck out of bed on time.

1 - move the alarm. force myself to get up to turn it off. when i did this before i just taught myself how to sleep through it but i figured it was worth a try again.

2 - sleep in jogging shorts. as soon as alarm goes off get up and go for a brief jog!

3 - sleep nude. as soon as alarm goes off get up and look at self in mirror, decide what is sagging the most and do 5 minutes of exercise to target that forsaken area.

4 - just get the fuck up. albeit, this hasnt worked in the past but it seems like a good idea. i know once i deprogram myself from sleeping in ill get up as soon as the alarm clock goes off.

all of the above represent starting new habits for me.

any practical advice is appreciated.

best,
d

D -
I had and still slightly have the same problem - but I have begun seeing some improvement since I got tested for sleep apnea and started using the CPAP machine.  The other day, I didn't use it, and there was a noticeable difference in my ability (or lack of ability) to get up on time in the morning.

Other than that, I try to have everything ready for the morning when I have to get up - to eliminate as much as possible anything that I have to do in the AM (other than shower, shave, hygiene, get dressed).

I am going to try to start getting myself to bed at least a 1/2 hour earlier  - it doesn't sound like much, but I think it will also make a big difference.

Hope you get some good suggestions and get it worked out.

-Phil

thanks phil. getting my stuff ready at night definitely makes that am rush better. getting into a routine of getting my stuff ready the night before is a whole other issue :)

i think i sleep pretty well at night but am not against getting tested for sleep apnea. i think my mom has that also. when i wake up i just find my bed to be very comfy. i've always blamed it on me being a libra and my ethnicity, lol.

I feel you on the libra part - I'm one too - and I do think we tend to like to sleep in...
Getting into a routine of having stuff ready took a little getting used to, but I try to do it as soon as I get in from work or going out after work.  The big thing I did is to iron all my dress shirts for the week on Sunday - it doesn't take that long, and allows me to have all me outfits for the week ready (pants are all dry cleaned, so I don't have to worry about doing those)

I also avoid caffeine after 1 pm ---- I used to think that it didn't effect my sleep, but found that when I quit using it after 1, it helped a little bit in terms of getting a better nights sleep.

The sleep apnea for me was the real culprit though - each night I use the machine and get more used to it, the better I have been waking up.... I still don't think I am ever gonna be a bright in the morning person, but at least it has slowed down me waking up and not being able to get out of bed and getting to work late.  Although, my boss had kind of gotten use to my 20-30 minutes late routine.

There are alarm clocks that roll or fly away when they go off -- so you have to get up and find the bugger to turn it off.

Here's one that flies:  http://www.sourcingmap.com/crazy-flying-helicopter-digital-alarm-clock-children-gift-p-24687.html

They work for a few months

Have you tried going to bed earlier?

I tried a really weird trick which worked.

I set my wrist watch, clock and phone watch -half hour fast. I knew that it is half hour fast -but every time I looked at it, psychologically at least, I would feel like I am running late and start waking up sooner. On average- 15 minutes sooner than otherwise.

So when I would wake up in the morning and look at the clock it would be half hour late already. For a brief second I would ACTUALLY  feel like I overslept by half hour. So I'd go back to sleep for a bit but still wake up -say non average 15minutes sooner than otherwise.

Net result :- It did trick me in to waking up sooner.

I tried the "get shit together the night before" too and it only gave me another reason to hit snooze again. What worked for me was an intensified #1 on your list - I had three alarms set to go off two minutes apart. One was next to the bed (and first to go off) but the other two were in opposite corners on the other side of the room. I'd end up so pissed off at the racket I'd have to get up.

D, you could always give me your number so I could ring until you got your lazy ass out of bed. ;D

Mine is 10 minutes, and ever since - my life is much easier (and, amazingly enough - I never think "Oh, I have those 10 extra minutes"; I always hurry, and I'm always on time...most of the time) :)

At the time I tried the trick, 10 minutes never worked! I was still late. A full half hour definitely did do the trick though. :)

All the time I'm late - it's because the computer.

Just to see this, just to check that...and the next time I take a look at the time - I'm late.

So when I have some very important things to do and when I have to get on time somewhere - I stay away from it!

The other weak link is the bathroom. Too much time in shower (time literary stops then, mine time), too much staring at my face in the mirror (sometimes, not often)...and before I know - I'm late again. So another trick that helps is the watch in the bathroom wall. Also helps. Before that I used to go out of the bathroom, checking the time SURE I've spent only 5 or 10 minutes there...only to realize it's been at least half an hour, often more. So no more that kind of shock for me with that watch in the bathroom...

AND it helps if I decide what to wear that day the night before. OR else there's endless staring in the closet...than walk to the window...than (sleepy) waling to the closet again...

Number 2 and 3 are jokes I guess.  3 is about self-esteem, oddly, and seems like a really destructive thing to do to your enthusiasm about yourself and about your life, at the start of the day.   Think about that.

Get alarm clocks, put them around the room.

Also set your cell phone alarm to SEVERAL alarms but only 2 minutes apart.  This avoids the tendency to think you can snooze to the next alarm because the next alarm happens too fucking fast and it is completely annoying.

Finally the key is mental - when one of the alarms successfully gets your attention so you are concious, you need to move your butt into the kitchen and sit at the table with coffee, or into the shower.

Shower or coffee, never fails. You aren't going back to bed after that.

So - multiple alarms.  And the will power to move you butt out of bed and start the day.

The armchair psychologist says this oversleeping is in the same group of feelings/actions as your avoidance/anxiety  about budgeting.

If there is a pattern of avoidant behaviour and potentially sabotaging behavior, its good to recognize it and find out how to bring it all down.  I don't think thats necessarily as easy as dealing with each little problem, or maybe it is.

Is this about motivation?  Get a job that you actually don't mind showing up on time to.

We can't all be stewardesses, Cliffie.

D,

Your problem is that you're bone idle. Set your alarm and get your faggot ass out of bed at the appointed hour. I presume you're not chained into the fucking thing.

It isn't difficult. All it requires is that you put the bong down an hour before you go to bed.

Well,  I hope your able to get this sorted out and corrected. I think all company's have a policy on tardiness. And with the amount of people looking for work today, companies, won't hesitate to let an employee go.

In my workplace, being late 3 times within a year, can result in termination.

take care----Ray

Have you considered other possibilities?  It might tend to be a mindset in relationship to being on time for things.  I have a brother who suffers chronic lateness.  It's a standard joke that we add an hour to any appointment we set with him.  Punctuality is not his strong point and he tends to be late for most things.  He's fortunate that he doesn't have set hours for his employment.  I on the other hand, am as a matter of routine, am always on time for everything. So perhaps it's a mindset rather than a sleep issue?

I can't believe no one has suggested getting a boyfriend or girlfriend who is an early riser.

Not that it is a good idea, but I can't believe no one here has suggested it.

My daughter's father is an early riser but he was always too scared to try and wake me up when I was in "snooze mode". I had a Time Out TruncheonTM and a Ban HammerTM even back then. ;D

I was thinking the same thing.  Perhaps an experiment is in order...  no weed for a week and see if it's easier getting up?  If it is.....   well, you might need to start another thread for that one.............

I was often late to work during my drinking days -- not so much since I quit.

I never hit the snooze button and hop right up out of the bed -- coffee beckons! Followed by a fabulous morning crap.

I get a 5:30 a.m. wake up call during the week from my sister (she took over my dad's role of doing this); I then go back to sleep and have my alarm set for 6:00 a.m.; I usually hit the snooze one or two times and I am out of bed by 6:15.  I then bring joy to my younger brother by giving him his wake-up call at 6:45 a.m. (which is 5:45 his time) ---- I try to be out the door by 7:15.

If my lazy ass gets to the grocery store, I have coffee ready here at the house, if not, then I hit the BK up, which is a block away on the way to work.  Gotta have my morning coffee, otherwise, it is all over.

Coffee from Burger King? You might as well just drink water from your backed up toilet.

set the alarm an hour earlier than you really need to get up. Then you have plenty of time to hit the   snooze 3 or 4 times to get the satisfaction of sleeping in; plus you'll still end up starting your day early rather than late. ;)

Nope dear, this is always a trap for me.  If I know there is snooze, I could very well assume there's another and another until there isn't one and then, shit, way overslept.

Snoozes only work if they are very close together for me.  Super annoying.  But just a tiny bit of pity on myself, giving me 2 or 3 minutes to realize I have to WAKE THE FUCK UP.  ::)

WAKE THE FUCK UP.  ::)
because of yrs of puking and diarrhea (thank you antiretrovirals) I've long been in the habit of waking up 2 hrs or more before I have to leave the house to give my body time to do whatever it's going to do, so that I can go do whatever it is that I have to do that day. ;)

Truly, the only solution here it a mental adjustment to get up when the alarm rings.
Title: Re: cant get out of bed on time

@ hellraiser aka ice trey. i cannot go to bed earlier. if im in bed before 1030 my body thinks in napping and ill wake up at 3 something, lol. but i can try going to bed at the same time on a nightly basis and taking my meds at the same time :)

@ spacebarsux - i will do math in the morning. i will add or subtract and figure out how much more i can sleep. i i will also start deducting activities in my head (you can eat in the car instead of at the table) so i can get another 5 minutes in :)

@ nicolas2 - i cannot turn on the computer in the morning for the same reason! i also had to buy a clock for my bathroom about a year ago so i could turn that time vortex into a measured space. it totally helps to pick out at least 2 outfits the night before. i kinda still like selecting my clothes based on my mood in the morning but i can prepare the selection the night before :)

@ mecch - i wish i was joking about 2 & 3 but since all other attempts have produced inconsistent results ive decided to try something else. i am working out 2-3 times a week and i thought a great way to compliment those activities would be with a morning pep workout.

setting multiple alarm clocks - that is a great idea and it echoes something ann said earlier as well. my alarms go off about 15 minutes a part. i will try that if i don't get my shit under control by week's end.

your armchair psychology is probably dead on. i loathe responsibility in large doses and there is no one to help. i just end up ignoring everything until it is too late. its actually rather cyclic and i need to shorten the cycles of irresponsibility. this is also why i smoke pot...it allows me not to be completely rational and have to abide by some rule or schedule :)

@ cliff. i am working on that. i don't know what that looks like at this time but it is one of the reasons i am going back to school. my job pays me enough to support my lifestyle. now if i were just more financially responsible i would be able to pay off my debt and have more freedom. but you know i have a problem with maintaining responsibility solo.

@ mtd. you know i love your sexy australian ass, right. well, not as much as i love ann but it will have to do. you are right. i will just get out of bed and do something. i am getting better at not making love to my snooze button and establishing new habits. i have done it before and i do want to change the perception others have formed of me at work.

@ jre. i'd been fired a while ago. after my promotion i took a nap everyday for two weeks DURING training. i am a habitually tardy but i am a very hard and dedicated worker. even more so i am a problem solver that uses creativity and networking to resolve issues.

@ wolfter. im just late all the time. not dreadfully late and never late to my appts with customers but late to my job and social engagements. and not extremely tardy, just not on time. and i'm good about communicating when im tardy as well. it helps keep people not as pissed at me. your brother and i sound like kindred time bandit spirits.

@ gso -  i love this comment. now miss p will shit all over you or me for this. i am soo open to this. i would rather do it independently but hey, if a smart guy wants to wake me up in the morning im all for it  ;D

@ ann - he should have tried coffee and patience, lol.

@ bocker. i only smoke pot on the weekends. my work is too demanding and i can't be all fuzzy first thing in the morning. and i have to cut back on pot smoke due to some financial concerns and some other endeavors. wait, i will incorporate this suggestion into the overall scheme of things. thank you. (props to mtd on this too).

@ miss p - is this coffee attached to a puerto rican or something, lol :)~

@ phil - the wake up network! i love it. i will consider this. most of my family is east of me and the 1-3 hour time difference can be used to our advantage. i will add this to the list.

@ miss p's bk comment. i second that. much love but that coffee sucks. i'd be more a hater but im more about functionality than flavor and most coffee gets the job done! weird, i have the same viewpoint on alcohol.

@ phil's 2nd comment. all is forgiven :)

@ leatherman - great new avatar, you are looking stellar! this unfortunately does not work for me. i just have to get up, get up, get up.

thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. something has to change and i am willing to try the above suggestions. i will keep you posted!

best,
d

i've been using options 3 & 4 (3-brief workout in morning, 4-just get the fuck out of bed) and i've been getting my ass to work on time!

not everyday, but a great start and a huge improvement! i hope this is here to stay and want to see myself more timely in the long run. my mornings have been a hell of a lot less stressful too.
