New Question Abaout HIV Risk
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:01:33 pm »
Hi all...

Surfing on the net I read some information that confused me...

I'm a heterosexual male that ever used condoms for vaginal and oral sex with all my partners, no exceptions (except two occasions when I receive unprotected oral), I've been very carefully with the use of condoms seeing if some broke or tear (running it under water, etc) or slip off, never happened...

What is my risk?

I read the condoms just are 85% effective against HIV... ???

I'm really confused, I though that I was doing OK...

Thanks in advance...

As long as you used a condom consistently and correctly, your risk is ZERO.

Thanks for the quick response...

Yeah consistently (every time, every contact) and correctly (from beginning to end before any genitalia contact, cheking expiration date, etc)...

Are there reports of infections using every time, without brokes or slip offs?

Why there is a report the said that (85% effectiveness)?

Thanks

It doesn't matter if you used a condom when receiving oral or not since getting a blowjo is not a risk for HIV transmission. Period.

I don't know what report you are referring to as being "85%" effective in relation to condom protection against HIV transmission.

Other than when a condom breaks or is not put on correctly with the head of the penis covered,  latex condoms are absolutely effective against HIV transmission. Period.

Thanks Andy...

My condoms never broke and always covered my penis before and after the intercourse...

So... nothing to worry about?

mess,

Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection when used correctly and consistently.

There have been long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

There are thousands of serodiscordant couples around the world where the negative partner remains negative through condom use. I'm in such a relationship myself.

Read through the three condom and lube links in my signature line.

And don't forget when you read any information from the US government concerning hiv, they still promote the failed Abstinence Only campaigns. We don't have a religious or moral agenda here, unlike the US government.

New Question About HIV Risk
« Reply #8 on: September 20, 2007, 09:08:16 am »
Dear Ann or Andy, I appreciate the great work that you're doing here...

Previously You respond my question straight and clear... I Appreciate that...

My History... I'm a heterosexual male that had contact with about 20 high class CSWs (expensives) in the last 8 years (about 2 or 3 per year) ever use a condom for vaginal and oral sex (except two occasions that they performed on me unprotected fellatio), no cunnilingus, always had been very carefully with the use of those condoms (running under water etc) never broken or slip off, I think my overall risk was very low near to zero, called to my HIV hotline that said me if I used the condoms every time and from the beginning to the end had nothing to worry about and had to move on with my life, I guess my worries are mainly for guilt...

I like to hear you professional opinion, frequently read your forum from time to time for safer sexual education...

Do you concur with my HIV hotline and my thoughts...?

Do you think are my fears irrational?

Don you think I have turn the page...?

Thanks in advance...

(By the way in my country the prevalence of HIV in CSWs is about 0,5% to 1%, if it matters)

Mess,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

My advice to you is to test - simply because you never have. Regular, routine sexual health check ups are what RESPONSIBLE adults do.

As you have always used condoms, I fully expect your test to return with a negative result. However, it sounds as though you need to see your negative result to not only put this behind you, but also so you can have confidence in condoms. They really do prevent hiv transmission.

Mess, anytime you have sex with anything or anyone other than your own hand there will always be some risk. So we cannot say that if you use a condom it means zero risk.

However, experience and statistics have shown that properly worn and without breakage occuring, a latex condom provides very effective protection. In general we also recommend that anyone who is sexually active ought to regularly have a full STD panel done at least annually.

Keep using the condoms consistently and we expect you to remain HIV negative.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
