Watchmen
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:20:39 am »
The night before I finally saw WatchMen. No comment. Well, here's the comment. They stole from the best: Matric, X-Men, Spiderman, Superman the original television series, Superman I II and III, NightStalker, Flash Gordon, Bozo The Clown, Electrica, The Beatles, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, Vietnam war, World War I and II, the nuclear bomb.. etc. And it still was a c average movie.

I read the graphic novel but I've not seen the movie yet. I have to wait until my partner goes out of town and I have a day off to see it. I appreciate Watchmen in an artistic sense but I'm not really a fan of the whole nihilistic, noir genre. I'm an X-Men fan and I'm more excited about Wolverine.

I haven't seen it yet. I've been waiting until the crowds have dwindled down. I might go see it next weekend.
'C' average, really? So I take it you weren't that impressed?

Don't get me wrong, I saw it and the sci-fi geek in me like it, but it was no X-Men and I too believe that Wolverine will be by far the better movie.  I repeat, it is a long C average movie.  One word of advice, take a long leak before seeing the movie for I was wiggling in my chair by the end of it.  It is over two hours of watching and no breaks.  Another thing, if I were a Demigod, my cock would be much bigger and more impressive than that blue guy.  Heck it already is.  ;)

I am a longtime complete comic book geek.  I have all the original Watchmen from many moons ago.  I think that the best thing about the story, and therefore the movie, is the fact that disposes of the 'save the world' formula.  The heroes in it are messed up narcissitic nut jobs, exactly as I suppose super heroes would be if they were real.   Cities actually do get blown up, innocent people actually die, and in villain's plan actually comes to fruition.   And, it didn't compact it all down into a nice, neat little 90 minute package.     Not that I don't love other superhero stories.  (hello... why has there been no Flash movie... sad scott..)    But, Watchmen was the title that actually started the current trend for looking at superheroes as ambivalent, sometimes even bad, people.   Before that, the best they could do was a drunk Iron Man, a constantly troubled Spider Man and maybe the death or Iris West.

Anyway, the book had a lot of impact on both sides of the fence.  The movie might not be that great taken as a movie alone... but the story is as important to the superhero genre as the Waste Land is to 20th century poetry.
