meds with a side of ???
« on: October 19, 2006, 02:15:59 pm »
When taking my morning meds, I can have some issues with nausea for the first hour.  This is especially true on an empty stomach.  Before meds, I had never been one to eat a big breakfast, so over the last year I’ve tried different foods in small amounts.  The single most perfect food to combat nausea for me has been a rice crispy bar.  I don’t know what it is, but I can even have a half bar and not feel the meds one bit.  A close second place would be a whey protein shake made with soy milk.  Most of the rest of the breakfast foods, i.e., eggs, toast, bacon or cereals (non rice) just don’t cut it!

What sorts of foods have the rest of you found effective or non-effective in combating nausea while taking meds?

I'm sure it's not a food, but it takes my mind off everything else *evil smirk*

I'm not a big breakfast person either, unless it's scrambled eggs or eggs benedict. then I can eat until I feel my arteries saying "Woooooah." I know enough to avoid a (fatty) bedtime snack unless I want to kick Sustiva to new heights. Things seem to be settling in, on the whole. I tend to just eat when I'm hungry, which is about 4-5 meals a day, with snacks in between. Rice is definitely a staple in my diet.

I've never had nausea from taking meds. However, I'm prescribed to take mine with food because it helps them work more effectively.

try peanut butter  it has lots of cardioprotective fat and will help the medicine bind well.

Hard Sourdough pretzels, and ginger ale with lots of ice. If I can't eat anything, I can usually get down a hard pretzel.

Sometimes the little gold fish crackers help also.

I agree with Christine here, I have always had good luck with pretzels or crackers (wheat thins). If it continue and gets really bad, dramamine has worked well. Bluelove gave me that idea. Thanks BLUE!

Hey Jason,

My meds require me to eat when I take them. I thankfully have not ran into this problem. If the rice crispy bar works, then all the better.

I started out on Sustiva and Combivir and had no sides, but after a year I was getting vl blips so the doc switched out Sustiva for Kaletra and lemme tell you - I know exactly what you are talking about with that first hour nausea. You take the pills and then a half hour later you get this wave of nausea.

At first I would try to walk it off, but not very conducive when you have to get to school. So, I would freeze a dozen bagels for a week and microwave one every morning and night - eat it bout 15 minutes before the Kaletra - and the nausea was greatly reduced and many times not even existent.

I switched over to Sustiva and Truvada not too long ago since the doc felt my vl was under control and now the nausea is gone.  I did, however, have the same issue a few months ago when I was prescrbed doxycylinne (sp? nasty little antibiotic) and did the bagel routine and it worked.

If you're looking to keep in shape, and don't want the carbs, whey protein is great and is really easy on the stomach (same stuff they use in baby formula). I have a Designer Protein shake daily for lunch (chocoalte only - the vanilla is nasty). Though I've never tried it for the nausea.

Hope it works out for ya :)

Hello,

My work schedule (11:00 Pm to 7:00 am) can make my dietary habits, a little tricky at times. My day actually begins at around 8:00 Pm, which is also my first dose (viramune and Viread.) I have never really had a problem with nausea. But at times, the stomach can get on the edgy side.

So, I usually have a yogurt product , about a half an hour after taking meds. Followed by a bowl of cold cereal, with Fat free milk, or skim milk. ( skim milk was kind a tough to get used to !!) Included with that a slice or two of toast, with that Yogurt spread type of butter.

My big meal, will be around 1:00Am, which is always a full course dinner ( provided to me at work, one of those fringe benefits) which is Salad, soup, main course, and a light desert, with apple juice. This is also the time, I take most of my vitamins.

Around 5:00 AM, It munchy time, and always healthy snacks, fruit, carrots sticks, celery sticks etc.. Beverages, green tea, sometimes a V-8, and always plenty of water.

When I get home from work at 7:15 AM, It is almost always another bowl of cereal, sometimes scrambles eggs, depending on the mood. Then it is time for the 8:00AM dose ( Viramune and Epzicom)..

On my days off from work (Friday and Saturday) everything is changed all around. Ed and I will go out, and have our big meal around 2:30 in the afternoon. It's a screwy schedule, but I have adjusted quite well to it. Sunday morning, we go out for breakfast, and I will most likely pig-out ! :P

My meds can be taken with/without food, But I always prefer something in the gut. It does make it easier. I find it better to eat less filling meals, but eat more often( 4-5) times during the day.

Take care----Ray

I often get a little wave of nausea after taking my meds, usually 45 minutes after I take them (its like clockwork).

Since I have to wait an hour after I take them to eat, I usually have something to nosh such as a banana or other fruit. Sometimes I will eat a potato chip or something salty. Sweets don't cut it.

Aside from that, I try to have four to five small meals a day, if I remember to eat. If I don't, then I may eat a slightly larger meal.

Of course, smaller meals is relative. I have what some may consider to be a healthy appetite.  ;D

HUGS,
