If you haven't had any strong symptoms within 4 weeks of exposure and haven't had any significant abnormalities with your health (you'd know if you did) all this time, you can relax and get back on a horse!

Symptoms mean nothing when it comes to diagnosing HIV nor do "health abnormalities". It's about risk exposures and HIV testing.

"When Should I Get Tested?
If you become infected with HIV, it usually takes between three weeks and two months for your immune system to produce antibodies to HIV. If you think you were exposed to HIV, you should wait for two months before being tested. You can also test right away and then again after two or three months. During this "window period" an antibody test may give a negative result, but you can transmit the virus to others if you are infected.
About 5% of people take longer than two months to produce antibodies. There is one documented case of a person exposed to HIV and hepatitis C at the same time. Antibodies to HIV were not detected until one year after exposure. Testing at 3 and 6 months after possible exposure will detect almost all HIV infections. However, there are no guarantees as to when an individual will produce enough antibodies to be detected by an HIV test. Yeah well T, that might work at the Body, but this is AIDSMEDS and we don't do the symptom thing. If you can't get on message, then maybe you shouldn't be giving advice to others.

"The body" quote was intended to inform worried_guy1 and not to have sensless arguments. I know exactly what he is going through and wanted to provide him with the official medical information from the complete AIDS source on the web. There was a case of a man beinng infected with HIV-2 here in the US. He became very ill 2 weeks after. Numerous tests revealed nothing untill 1 year later. Symptoms are they way of the body to tell us there was an invasion. True, they aren't aways there. This only proves that the human body is a complicated machine and it is wrong to assign specific time frame for the desease detection. One year is the most conclusive test however.

Worried guy did NOT have a risk of hiv transmission. Your advice to him was incorrect no matter which way you look at it.

And by the way, I don't care what sort of ultra-conservative-probably-paid-for-by-abstinence-only-funding claptrap is posted on the Body. This is AIDSmeds.com, not the Body. You'd do well to remember that. If you don't agree with our science-based advice, you are free to go elsewhere.

What total and utter rubbish I have read in this thread regarding symptoms, especially the argument about HIV-2 and symptoms. I vote that this poster be limited to their own thread.
