Title: Your first car
Post by: Dachshund on July 03, 2008, 09:06:03 am
Or in Jan's case the name of your first horse. ;D

No seriously. That first car was a real right of passage. Mine was a brand new yellow 1970 VW bug. My senior year my dad struck a deal. If I made the honor roll all year he would match up to $500 clams whatever I saved to buy a car. I worked part time my senior year as a delivery and clean up boy for the local pharmacy. The summer after graduation I worked at a warehouse that stored frozen foods for shipment. Somehow I managed to save $800 bucks. I didn't even have a checking account, but I can remember counting out $1200 cash for my bug.

I drove the hell out of that car and still was able to get $900 for it when I sold it.

Being from NYC my first car was the B48 bus and GG train.

However, while in college, I went to spend a summer with my sister and her husband in Georgia.  He got me a job doing waterproofing on buildings and obviously I needed a car.

Enter the 1978 Plymouth Volare Station Wagon (the one I drove was white)  It was already 15+ old when I started to drive it and burned so much oil that you had to carry a case of it in the back. The radio and air didn't work and the one window leaked in major storms.

Still, you always remember your first....

Mine was a silver 1979 Reault LeCar with a vinyl roof that flipped back. It has been consistently named on "worst cars" lists. One reviewer said "Like any French restaurant in America, it was overpriced, noisy, moody, and would put you in mortal danger if you had an accident with anything larger than a croissant." It had a bulb on the floor for the windshield washer and if you slammed your foot on it you could spray the car behind you. It also had a sticky solenoid switch and I had to carry a hammer under the seat to wack it so it would start. It had no power and seriously could not make it up a steep hill with more than two people.

At age 16 I loved it and was thrilled to have it. Here it is in all it's Gallic glory.

How bout a 1974 yellow AMC Gremlin with black hockey stick stripes.
It was new. And I traded it in, in 1976, for a new dark blue Camero with the bicentennial  red/white/blue hood ordainment.
Its was a fad back then to pop off and steal those 1976 Camero R/W/B bicentennial ornaments.
Mine was snatched by some neighbor kid I am still holding a grudge against...

In the showroom, next to my 1976 Camero was a new white Stingray.
I still remember the price tag of $11,000 on that white showroom Stingray.
My loaded new dark blue Camero with power everything and leather seats was
only a little over $6000. That was as high as I could afford, then.
But I sure remember that hot Stingray I wanted so badly...

Mine was a mid-70's orange Datsun pickup truck, with a really bad muffler.  One could here me coming blocks away. And the passenger side floor board was pretty much rotted through so that you could see the road below. But it was great and I taught many of my girl friends to drive a straight shift since their boyfriends never had the time or patience.  Great memories!!

My second car was the was a pale yellow Datsun B-210, also with a bad muffler and rusted floor boards.  We just loved our Datsun's!!!

ps - hope Datsun is spelled correctly since it is no longer in existence and not in our spell check...:)

My folks gave me my first car - a 1965 Rambler Ambassador.

It was quite a car. It ran forever, until the carbureator came loose and the engine caught fire.

It had a three-speed manual transmission with the gear shift on the colunn.

Ah, memories.

HUGS,

Mark

Mine was white.

'63 Chevy Malibu Biscayne,  white w/blue interior. Two seats and a metal dashboard. The radio worked, depending on how far the wire coat hangar had shifted around in it's hole. It could move...

I drove it between Mobile, Ala, and Fort Worth, .going  80-100.....a 12-15 hour drive, I would be pulling up in Mom's driveway after 8 hours with her looking at her watch. ...

After running it at close to 100 mph one Holiday visit, my 1st step father decided to drive it on a short trip and it blew up on him...

Mine was a 1965 Ford pickup.  My father and I took it down to the frame and he did all the mechanical stuff and I did the body work.  It was a really nice way to spend some time with father.  It took me all of junior year, working everyday after school/work on it, to get it done.  My senior year, we got dismissed early because of an ice storm and I crashed into a tree on the way home  :'(  I was coming down a hill and lost control once, got it back and lost it again.  We had to replace some ladies mailbox that I plowed down and I remember her putting out an old  metal feed bucket with U.S. Postal Service written in what looked like tar on it...very strange.
When I got my senior pictures done, the photographer like my truck so much, he had me pose with it. LOL.  The one time my hair actually took a perm, that is a scary memory.

I always wanted a 65 Ford Mustang convertible.

My first car was a used '81 Ford Escort hatchback.  My father got it for me in 1986 and I proceeded to wrap it around a telephone pole 3 years later.  My blood sugar crashed on the way to work one morning, and so did I.....I was a lucky girl, only 19 years old then.

Oh Auntie Hal,

My dad made a similar deal... If we were on the Honor Roll we could have any kind of car we wanted.  My brother and I both chose Corvette.  Mine was bright red with a 327 & 4 speed.  My brother nailed him for a 350 w/dual 4 barrel carbs and a 4 speed.  My sister got a Mustang coupe but did not get to choose the actual car.  It had a 6 cylinder and a 3 speed.

My dad didn't actually live with us from the time I was in the 5th grade to the time I graduated from High School.  He and Mon had an agreement, He lived with a waitress in the next town during the week and came home with his paycheck on Fridays.  My mom drove a pristine 1962 Corvette with FI 327.

Makes me want to break out in song

"Guys come to race her from miles around but she gives en a length and shuts em down
And everybodys sayin theres nobody meaner, than the little ole lady from Pasadena
She Drags and she drags and she drives real hard, she's the terror of Colorado Blvd"

We did not live on the same block as the Cleavers  ;D  Have the best day

Yipes,

Mine always got me pulled over by the local p[olice (yeah we had 3 cops in town  ;) )

1972 AMC Javelin SST (Red and black with the fake T-top look and rear spoiler) sheesh!

It was a bit rough off the line but I saw 130mph once with original equipment on a country road.  The passenger side had NO dashboard--just a handle to grab hold of!

My girlfirend's dad refused to let me take his daughter out in it.  So, I opted for my brother's 1969 cadillac sedan deville.  Silly man--have you ever seen the back seat of a 69 caddy?

When I got my license when I turned 16, I told my dad I wanted a car.  He said "work for it."  And I did.  I took a nurse's aid job at a nursing home.  I got a '69 Ford Galaxy for $400. It was an Arizona car, had nothing wrong with it.  Eventually, I sold it for $135 for some smack.  I kick myself everytime I think about that.

My first car was a 1967 Mercury Cougar that had a blown up small-block V8. For some reason, I was talked into replacing the engine with a 429cid V8 out of an old cop car. It wouldn't fit intially, so we heated up the shock towers with a torch and sledgehammered them a bit until the exhaust manifolds woud clear. But the you couldn't get to the sparkplugs for a tune-up. It went like a bat outta hell, but couldn't stop or steer worth a shit. I never registered that car. The first legal car I owned was a '73 Jeep CJ-5. Some sicko put a 351 Ford V8 into it. The exhaust system consisted of a set of cheap headers, with Cherry Bomb mufflers bolted directly to them. It was loud...... Once in the depths of a testosterone binge, I took it down the interstate at an indicated 105 mph with the top off and the windshield folded down :o. All I can say about the high speed handling of old Jeeps is that even four lanes ain't wide enough ;D My brother had a '71 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440 engine and three two-barrel carburetors (called the Six-Pak).Now that was a car to remember.

Hey Ford,

Two of my closest friends had Reneaut Daulphines (I will never be able to spell it) back in the day everyone was pronouncing them different.  One had a sun roof and the other had a special hiding place for beerand both had 8 tracks.

I saw one in this specialty car lot in Marina Del Rey recently.  It was a 59 and in show room condition.  They were asking a little over $6 thousand.  ;D Have the best day

Micheal,
I too owned a Dauphine for awhile in the eighties. I had it at the same time I had my '67 Lincoln Convertible. I remember that it had a 600cc engine, and after doing the math, realized that the entire engine had less displacement than just one of the eight cylinders of the Lincoln motor. I eventually got rid of it because my Newfoundland dog, Ben, couldn't fit into it. He weighed close to 180 pounds, whereas I weighed about 140.

My first and only car was a Datsun 180B.

Unfortunately, I had to arrange to have it stolen and burnt out so that I could receive the insurance money. I was young and dumb at the time and got myself into some major financial trouble when I thought that small time drug dealing may be a good career choice. I borrowed a few thousand $'s from a friend to set myself up, and bought a couple of hundred e's. Problem was, my friends and I were drug pigs and in the following couple of weeks ended up taking them all. End result was I had no job, no drugs to sell and a $3,000 debt.

Fortunately, I was rear ended by a tow truck one day. The tow truck driver took my car to a mates garage to be repaired. I got a phone call that night saying that my car was full of rust and likely to fall apart if they tried to fix it. Did I have insurance, he asked. Yeah, I replied. To which he said, would you have a problem if the car disappeared. I said, go for it.

Next morning, to my utter shock and surprise  ::), the police turned up at my door to advise me that my burnt out car had been found a few suburbs away.

I guess I am the only major late bloomer. I got my license when I was 35...*LOL* My first car was my 85 Chevy Caprice Classic which got into an accident last year and just got rid of it a few months ago. Now I am working with an 86 Chevy Celebrity Classic. What can I say? I like metal cars and classics, not into cars that can't take a hit which is most cars these days. I will always try to get a Chevy. I want my next car to be a Chevy Blazer. Preferably an 87.

I guess I'm the young'un here.  My parents got me a car in December of my senior year of highschool (1990).  They took me around to all the car lots in Baton Rouge and told me to pick what I wanted.  So, what did i get?  A 1991 rasberry red Plymouth Sundance 4-door.  So, I looked like a granny driving around, but it served me well.  I had it for quite a while until the ignition caught on fire - twice.

But, the 1st car I ever drove was my dad's beautiful Triumph TR6 convertable that my dad named Mrs. Hedgeworth.  Beautiful machine.  He still has it, but doesn't drive it.

edited because Hubby wanted me to let you all know how cool he was, in contrast to me,  back in the day.  His 1st car was a 1979 blue Mustang.

You know Mum, Me thinks you might be the young'un.  I bought this 1979 MGB in 1998 because it reminded me of days before HIV, it was going to be my last car and I really wanted a Porche.  On day 3 the enging on my little English Tea Pot burnt up on the Vicent Thomas Bridge, my $3000.00 became a $6000.00 car.  Then I started on the conversion with all the after market upgrades.  The cost of the car is well over the cost of a used Porche and I may have driven it this year.  ;D  Have the best day

OOOOOOH!

I had a 1977 MGB, white with wire wheels back in 1977.(Amazing that!)

I loved it when it ran, which wasn't often.

I traded it in on another white car. A 1977 Chrysler Cordoba with the rich Corinthian leather seats, a 440 engine and a Holley 4-barrel carbureator, which I added after the thermoquad it came with (which actually heated the gas some way or another) crapped out.

Of course, this was just before the first gas crisis in the late 70s.   ::)

Today, I have a slightly smaller car, as you can see below.

Next time you come in to the Big City with your Miata, let me know, I'll bring the '05 Beetle convertible, and we can have us a drag race ;). I knew someone with an older style Miata, that had a 5.0 litre Mustang engine and 5-speed stuffed into it. It looked totally stock, and could leave a Corvette sucking its exhaust fumes ;D ;D

My first MGB of the happier times I spoke of was a 1966 in (1971?) I bought it in Spain.  I could never sleep nights and often took the roof down, drove to the Plaza Cibelles.  Some nights I'd end up in Toledo and sometimes Malaga.  I burned the wiring harness out of that and got a 68, put those two cars together.

Many years later, I was living in Cupertino and the Mazda released the Miata, the advertising was designed to remember the early British roadsters so I bought a 1976 Triumph Spitfire.

The car I really wanted was the Sunbeam Tiger.  It was the Sunbeam Alpine from 1966 with a factory conversion 289 Mustang engine.  There was so little room under the hood, special hatches were built into the firewall si the spark plugs could be changed.  ;D  Have the best day

Then he gave me a 1978 4 door Nova, which he bought for 400 dollars.  Great car.  Traded it for a 1980 Camaro, then a datsun 280zx with a turbo.     I wish I could have bought this one,1970 SS chevelle, but he did let me drive it. Once. I scared him too bad to get to drive it again.    Cristy

cjc,
My partner Norm bought his first new car when he was in the Navy in 1970. He bought a '70 Chevelle SS with the 396 big block, 4-speed trans. It was dark blue with white stripes, and had a cowl induction hood on it. He has many fond memories, and would love to have another one someday. Alas, the prices for these things are in the stratosphere. A nice one now will set you back an easy $50,000. All we need now is a time machine.....

Actually Dach my first horse was called Magenta, a beautiful chestnut filly.... ;D

My first car however was a little red Mini with a long gear stick on the floor that didn't quite fit into the geat box properly, I remember I had to pull it up to get it into reverse gear and 9 times out of 10 the bloody thing came away in my hand...so I always tried to park where I didn't have to reverse in or out of anywhere...but she was a little beauty non the less.. :D

My first car was a '72 Chevy Impala.  I bet that thing didn't get any better than 10 or 12 miles to the gallon.  Of course gas was just under $1/gal back then.

Jan is that when they were called the horseless carriages? ;)

Ok I lied, it wasn't the Miin it was this one, she went like a rocket...0 -15 in half an hour, the wind blowing in your hair, (but only if you managed to actually get to 15) now that's what I call travelling in style.. ;D

Jan, I can picture you driving that. You would have looked like the mayor's wife driving it with goggles on learning how to drive in the movie "The Color Purple."

The first care I had gotten new, was a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner. I think I had about $1200.00 dollars, that I saved to put down on that. My older sister and her husband, co-signed the loan for me. Loved that car !! I sold it to a friend of mine, when I got drafted into the Army in 1971, and he managed to total it out within a month after buying it. He was OK. Such a shame though. If you had one of those cars today, their worth some money.

After that, I didn't buy a new car again until 1986. But always bought Chevy !

Ray ( who remembers how solid and fast his Roadrunner was )

cjc,
My partner Norm bought his first new car when he was in the Navy in 1970.

CaptCarl
CaptCarl,     that Chevelle also has a 396 and a 4 speed. My dad sold it for about $15,000 and fully restored it would have brought quite a lot more. It was a great car. He still has a 64 SS Chevelle but it is languishing under a car cover and waiting to be finished. he also has a 63 SS Chevy II and it drives like a boat.               Cristy

            Can we say GAY?@!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I can say Gay... 1992 Saab 900 S is a $500.00 car which I call the Saab Story.  But right now, I would like to point a little detail on the 60's cars.  All of our Dads were loggers cutting down trees and our high school parking lot housed some heavy metal during the school ear.

The 409 as I knew it belonged to Jimmy, it was a 1963 Chevy Impala SS.  It had 4 speed, qual quad, positraction just like the song said but, it probably cost about $6,000.00 and no high school kid could "save my pennies and save my dimes, before I knew there would be a time, that I would buy a brand new 409."  So much for the Beach Boys.  There was a red 1965 Goat aka GTO belonging to my friend Paul.  Jan and Dean used to sing, "Gonna save all my money and buy a GTO, gonna turn it on, wind it up blow it up, GTO"  Jan and Dean could understand the value of the dollar better than the Beach Boys.  ;D
Have the best day
Michael
