Mac or PC?
« on: January 14, 2008, 10:42:01 pm »
Ok a few hours ago I poured 8 oz of water on my Dell laptop. I knew water was not for me. The result is that the hard drive is not seen anymore. The PC seems to be fine (with a CD) but it cannot find the hard drive.

It is time for me to get a new PC anyway.. and I have a desktop that runs Vista and I FREAKING HATE IT. Vista is driving me TOTALLY CRAZY to the point I am going to install XP on it next week end.

All laptops now come with Vista, and there is no way i'm going to keep Vista on it if I buy a PC. I have the XP install disk so I can just format & reinstall, but this voids warranties.

Should I go for a Mac instead? I think the Macs are fine but way too expensive. I don't think spending more than $1200 on a laptop is reasonable and what you get from Apple for this price is stupid. Should I spend more and get a Mac? My laptop was a 17inch Dell Inspiron, and I was very happy with it except for Dell's famous power supply problems.

I use the laptop to connect to the internet, email, NO games, NO stuff that requires amazing power, and I don't care about storage size because I have an external drive already, and what I store is taxes and porn. I want something nice, fast responding, with a large screen.

Any advice is welcome!

I am a MAC person even my college days (before they even invited Windows, the Mac was ruling the market for a while), but at work I have to use a PC. The thing about a Mac is that it's more stable and reliable in the long run. At work we have to change a laptop every 2 years and usually within a year some problems will show up. My new one at work is about 6 months old and right now it's already going a bit freaky, especially while running iTune and Explorer at the same time. Outlook is one big piece of junk too!

Whereas the Mac I have at home is almost 4 years now and it's stable as ever. Plus less than 1 year after buying it I dropped it from the compartment above the seats on a plane, and it still worked/works. And the big plus is that a Mac is great for playing videos, whether it's avi or mpeg or even wmv (you can install a driver so Quicktime can play wmv).

So, I will vote for a Mac anytime...

Hey,

Admittedly, I"m a Windows person, I use vista, and love it.. does everyting I need (got it with new computer)

regarding win vs mac -- depends on your level of computer literacy, both are very powerful, both are easy to fuck up if you don't know what you're doing.  If you're just a casual computer user, I'd say MAC, because not much can go wrong with them in the long run (Personal opinionn is that they've been vegetabalised enough for the majority of users)

What don't you like about vista?

Don't know what to tell ya. I have refused to upgrade to Windows Vista, the more I read in the computer forums, the more I want to stay away from it. Don't some computer manufacturers, offer XP still, for the operating system.

Anyway this article was in our local paper yesterday.  Gives a little infomation or comparison on the two

"A. I took a lighthearted poke at Macs two weeks ago and sure enough I received a few passionate letters from some angry Macphiles. I find the whole rivalry thing silly. A computer is no different from any other appliance - whatever works best for you is the correct choice. Both platforms have their share of problems. Don't buy the marketing hype. However, there is one thing that won't be changing anytime soon: As long as Windows is more than 92 percent of the marketplace, there will always be more compatible software and hardware for Windows PCs rather than Macs. With all other things being equal, why would you want to limit yourself? Apple and Microsoft should be ashamed of the nonsupport they gave you."

You can still get XP systems, but they're a bit harder to find.  Generally, systems designed for businesses are the ones with a choice.  If it comes down to it, you can often install XP on a system that came with Vista, but just make sure that there are XP drivers for the system.

Whenever anything electronic has any liquid spilled onto it, the first thing to do is turn it off, unplug it, and remove the battery.  Don't even try to see if it still works until you've dried it out (if water) or cleaned it out and then dried it (if something other than water).

Mac all the way....

If you don't need a PC for some specific software or hardware i would def. recommend a mac.  I have had mine for a couple years now and it has held up so much better than my partner's comparable PC.  2 years later: mac is dirty and that white is not quite so pristine (like its owner) everything else is fine.  PC is formatted about once every 2 months to keep it running and gets bogged down all the time.  Won't go back unless apple craps out, or PC's improve.

What don't you like about vista?

It's asking me 200 times a day if I allow x or y to run. It blocked itself so that it would refuse to allow its own components to run, e.g. the allow button was not allowed... Hangs with no reason about twice a day (I have to reboot it twice a day), external drive suddenly disappears from the list of drives, hard to find applications, too many clicks to get to something etc etc..

It depends what you are using it for really but i'd always go for a PC, MAC's are so expensive for what you get.  I have to look after some MAC's at work and most of the time i'd prefer to throw them out of the window.  Style or substance is what your choosing between really!

PC for browsing (but always stay at least one version of Windows out of date.. which for me means always using the oldest supported version) and MAC for getting creative.

Milker.

You can turn the UAC (user access controll) off, if it bothers you.... Personally I don't mind, I find that extra level of security a little reassuring.

If you want to turn it off;

Hope this is of some help ::-)

Well I thought.. I have a desktop PC hooked up to the TV, so that's wide enough if I need to get something that requires to be wide :D :D :D

poz, yeah I disabled user account, which defeats the security so I turned it back on.. If it was not asking me the same thing again and again everytime I run a program that would be better. I just lost my mind about Vista yesterday and I'm not coming back. XP it is !

I guess a trouble-free Windows system depends on the user.  As to formatting an XP system, I haven't done that in over two years on my current notebook (used every day at home) or four years on my desktop at work (also used every day).  I don't reboot my systems for months on end.  They run just fine, but then I know how to set up a system for maximum reliability.  Lots of memory helps, too.  Hubby used to have a Mac notebook... it locked up regularly when running iMovie.

Just remember that with XP, it doesn't come up with any prompts to when its changing system files!  Just make sure you run Windows Defender in the background, coz that does pick up 'mysterious' registry changes.

If you're just going to be using a computer for browsing the net, I'd say Mac, but if you're a 'power user' and inclined to fiddle, I'd say PC (just keep good backups :-)

Milker,

Over the years, I've seen both Mac and PC users dredge up stories about nightmares with the other platform.  I also know folks here in Austin that work at Apple's customer support center, and others that work at Dell's customer support center.  And they can all tell of horror stories.

Personally, I have owned both (first apple, then PC).  One thing that chaps my hide is how expensive Apple's stuff is.  Cost is an important factor for me.  I also feel I have a wider choice of hardware and software for a PC.  For me, those items tipped the scale in favor a PC for my last purchase.  Admittedly, Apple has a "cool" factor that a PC will have a hard time matching.  That's not important to me in a computer, but it is for some.

Regards,

Henry
