I think it is because HIV is a bigger deal than what is being let on and discussed including, on here.

That is obviously what this thread has been about from the start. When people start reading about HIV they get two conflicting messages: 1) HIV is a manageable condition and 2) people with HIV suffer from multiple medical, financial and psychological problems. The reason you are wondering what is the truth is because the HIV is different for different people. Also no one agrees what is "manageable". If you are recently diagnosed, have healthcare benefits, have support and no other complicating conditions than HIV is probably going to have less impact on your life. If you were around before protease inhibitors, poor, have other medical or psychological problems, don't have support or don't have access to healthcare then HIV is going to have a greater impact.

Everyone has a different story. The newly infected want to believe the doctors when they say HIV is a manageable condition. Other people, particularly LTS, are offended  by "manageable" because their situations are not always manageable, they feel their concerns are being trivialized and they know not to always trust the medications or the political situation.

It is complicated. There are no easy answers and it is understandable that people, particularly the newly infected, don't know what to believe.

Ok just to clear things out and close this thread as I think maybe the point has been missed by a few people.

The question was asked
1. Seriously
2. Rhetorically.

I understand HIV has been and continues to be a disabling and sometimes fatal disease.
My question was more in trying to bring attention to the fact that this has been lost.  As someone who recently tested positive, I have been told several times that this is a "chronic and manageable" disease.  My primary care physician compared it to Diabetes and said she would much rather give someone an HIV diagnoses than many of the other common diseases that affect men in their 30's like lymphoma or testicular cancer<direct quote.

However, in listening to people who have lived with the disease (especially the LTS and even newer infected) there is a lot of hardship and dispair that accompanies it.

As I said earlier:   Something is not being said

The realities do not match the image.  Thank you all for listening and good night.

Lawd ... I found your bug , it was behind you but out of sight .

Sometime things come across as harsh when they really are not meant that way in the forum .
I still think all that you have asked was answered , perhaps not as you would like to hear it but answered none the less .

don't forget that a fair number of people don't even find out that they need assistance until they present to the hospital, find out that they have AIDS, barely survive some OI, and then get out to find their whole life has fallen apart.  ;)

Well said Mickie.  I know 3 people personally that doctor after doctor failed to test them for HIV until they were far into AIDS territory and their health  irrepairably damaged.  failure to test, the lack of STD education,  and all the hypocritical stigmas and so called risk factors drive far too many into this abyss needlessly because they, their practitioners, or society do not know or refuse to listen. This bullshit of no sex education in hopes your kid will have the next immaculate conception and your republican senator will abandon his prostitute in the bathroom stall to shake your hand costs way more in lives/healthcare dollars and is probably the only thing that 1/3rd of the kids will pay attention to in class.

Well, SINCE you pit it in CAPS. WE must pay attention.

I dont Buy it.

Pretty inflamitory remark. If your insurance won't pay, or has a limit on what it  will  pay and you  have fallen into the abyss of one or more of the degenerative illness' associated with having AIDS and cannot work or can only work part time how do you expect a person to pay 15 to 35,000 thousand dollars per year in meds plus another 10,000 per year in testing and doctors fees, $100,000 a year in hospitalizations;   Or are we supposed to just drop dead and leave what's left of this planet to the elite and fortunate few? :(

David,

That last part of your paragraph was actually quite funny (even if you did not intend it to be so)  ;D

To the OP:

For me, having been diagnosed only 2 years ago and never having gotten sick or had CD4s below 330 or so, HIV is a perfectly manageable disease.

I do work and have insurance through my job but my biggest fear is losing my coverage because HIV meds are so expensive.

If I were to lose my job I would have to try and get ADAP otherwise I would not be able to afford an extra $2,000. per month for Isentress and Truvada plus the cost for the lab work every 6 months.

If it were not for the very high cost of HIV meds many people would not have to resort to programs such as ADAP for their HIV meds.

ADAP is not comprehensive insurance, it only covers meds and labs, if a person has only ADAP and they get sick and have to go to the hospital ADAP does not cover that.

To someone who mentioned co-pay assistance earlier: this is not the same as "public assistance" programs. Co-pay assistance has nothing to do with one's income level. It's something that the big pharmaceutical companies do to promote good PR for themselves. It's open to people who have private insurance and have co-pays for their meds, which means these are people who have jobs, etc.  I mention this because some people out there think they would not qualify for it, etc. If you have insurance and have co-pays you qualify regardless of your income.

So along the same line,  if you  want to raise money for projects we could write a book...... [In a copyrighted story today Eye Yi Yiii news reported  that sources have confirmed that a person now identified as Fantasy Fayne appeared at Bay Hospital  seeking medical attention for an injury received to her chin in an incident reportedly involving our four term senator.  Reportedly,  Miss Fayne, who is 16 1/2 years of age answered a request for services by the senator who was seeking certain discrete services listed in an on  line advertisement. At some point the senator made a quick exit from the third bathroom stall at the I5 Truckstop resulting in Miss  Fayne striking her chin on the stall door causing a laceration the required 14 stitches to close.  When this Eye Yi Yiii columnist contacted the senator's publicist, one Biff Gaufenisen, a former beach weightlifter and  son of  chocolate filled cookie heiress Ann Wheatpaste for comment,  Eye Yi Yii news was informed that at this time there will be no comment until he has the opportunity to  confirm that Miss Fayne was offering a January Holiday Special on her website at the time.  Eye Yi Yii  News unsuccessfully tried to contact the senator's wife who is reportedly  in the Bahamas taking tennis lessons from a Jamaican tennis star she met when the senator was recouperating  from  a stated pulled groin muscle at Graceful Pines,  a popular rehab institute for celebrities.  More information will be added as this story develops.[/size]
