Crypto!
« on: January 24, 2012, 02:28:12 pm »
Just spent 5 days in the hospital with cryptosporidosis. I would not wish it on my worst enemy.

I am ok now, but waiting for the drug Alinia to continue treating this.
There is a shortage of the drug and it is being shipped directly to my pharmacy from the company that makes it.

Anyone else had a brush with this yukky parasite?

Curse of the blue eyed people in the tropics!

Be careful not to re-expose yourself to it if you recall where that happened.

From the Wiki on Crypto Transmission:

Infection is through contaminated material such as earth, water, uncooked or cross-contaminated food that has been in contact with the feces of an infected individual or animal. Contact must then be transferred to the mouth and swallowed. It is especially prevalent amongst those in regular contact with bodies of fresh water including recreational water such as swimming pools. Other potential sources include insufficiently treated water supplies, contaminated food, or exposure to feces. The high resistance of Cryptosporidium oocysts to disinfectants such as chlorine bleach enables them to survive for long periods and still remain infective. Some outbreaks have happened in day care related to diaper changes.

Our concern about CRYPTO is why we have a water filter on the kitchen faucet that will filter out crypto.  (Not all do)  We use filtered water for everything except if water is boiled.  Even for ice.
It is possible to get crypto from drinking tap water.  But as Joe has pointed out there are a lot of sources.
