can i move on
« on: December 26, 2007, 05:55:02 pm »
Hey Guys, First want to let you know you are doing a great thing on this board. Well here goes. I had unprotected vaginal sex with a call girl 12.5 weeks ago. I was tested for chlamidia/gon 10 days post exp.-negative. then tested for Hep a,b,c @ 6.3 weeks-negative. Syphillis 8 weeks negative. Here is where the barrage of Hiv tests started. Hiv dna pcr at 18/28 dys - undetected, rapid antibody test 5,6,7,9,10,and finally 12 weeks....All negative. You would think I would have been celebrating, but for some reason I feel worse. I keep thinking I am one of those special cases that doesnt convert by 12 weeks, even though I took 2 Dna tests and 6 rapid tests. I guess the fact that I am having some muscle and joint pains kind of keeps me worried. Never had them before. It could be caused by all the stress i put myself thru...I have never been so scared for so long in my life . I literally have been on the computer for 6-8 hours a day reading up on hiv and stds for the past 3 months. So I hope my HIV tests are conclusive as well as my other Tests for stds. I just want to make sure im not missing any tests I should be taking. What do you guys think, Am I all good or what? Greatly appreciate your time and expertise.

You have a conclusive negative result. You are HIV negative and whatever the symptoms are they are unrelated to HIV.

thanks for the prompt reply. Do you know of any other tests i might have not aken concerning stds, and if the tests i took are in the proper window periods. I also was wondering why std clinics test only for chlamdia,Gon., Syphillis, and HIV, but dont test for Hep B and C?

If you want an HBV or HCV test see your doctor.

As posted above, I did test at 6.3 weeks. They came back negative. my doc said that is enough time to wait(as well as Dr Hansfield on medhelp), but I have read 3 months. Is this similiar to the window period for HiV, where a 6 weekk test would pick almost all infections, but apercantage take up to 3 months ???? THis window period stuff is absolutly crazy.

We subscribe to the CDC's recommendation to get a final result at 13 weeks. Given that the average time to seroconversion is 22 days, and that all but the very, very smallest number seroconvert within 4-6 weeks after an exposure, your negative at this points towards your continuing to test negative at 13 weeks. And that's what I expect will happen.

Now get busy during the rest of the waiting time and it will pass more easily than you may imagine is possible.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Thanks for the reply Andy. I did test for HIV out to 3months. My last question was regarding other testing for other stds and their window periods, specifically HBV and HCV.. It would be great if you could take a look at my original post and give me ur feedback. Thanks again.

This is not a website for STDs, if you have a question regarding STDs. I suggest you contact your doctor. You don't have an HIV concern.

Rod's given you the right answer. We can't advise you about other STDs other than to see your doctor if you continue to have concerns.

Thanks for the clarification about HIV. That's certainly good news.

Cheers,

Happy New years everyone...Im sorry to bother you again for your expertise, but I would like to ask Andy and or Ann a question. I know the cdc and other sites state 3 months for a conclusive test. Now my last test was at 12 weeks(84dys) which I thought was 3months, but now I see in alot of the answers given here in regards to conclusive testing states 13 weeks. So is it 12/ or 13 weeks? I have never been so scared in my life. My only symptom is sore muscles and joint pains, which I would like to dismiss as ailments from severe anxiety and depression, but i cant, due to all the uncertainty in testing. After my 7 rapid tests and 2 negative dna pcr tests, I have only begun to get more worried by the day. I have seeked counseling, and the therapist knows all about my ordeal, but is not an hiv counselor. I guess I would be fine if my therapist was an HIV specialist, and could tell me I AM NOT INFECTED AND TO MOVE ON. I wanted to see if I could get reponse from either of you, and see if it would make me feel better. If not, I will take my doctors orders, and start taking Effexsor(which I would rather not ). Thank you very much.

worried,

You do not have hiv. In the UK and most of Europe, twelve weeks is considered conclusive. The difference between twelve and thirteen weeks is purely academic. The thirteen week window is obtained by splitting the year into quarters, while the twelve week window is obtained by counting four weeks as a month. (there are actually thirteen four-week periods in a year - so a strict quarter of a year is thirteen weeks)

Your test result is conclusive. You do not have hiv. You are hiv negative. Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and you'll stay that way. Read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use them with confidence.

Thanks for your prompt reply Ann. Regarding all the testing I have done on top of the Hiv tests, do you think there is anything I m missing. I am going to see the doctor on monday regarding my joint and muscle pains, and I want to make sure I have covered all my bases when it comes to STDs and Hiv. Thanks so much Ann. Your answers are always very comforting.

worried,

The only thing you seem to be "missing" is the fact that you don't have hiv. I'm glad to hear you're seeing your doctor tomorrow - because whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv.

Sorry guys but im back again with some concern. I took another test at 14 weeks and recieved a negative result. I still have these darn joint and muscle pains. I read  that this might be reactive arthritis. I also read that Reactive arthritis is caused by a immucompromised system. Does this mean that this can cause late seroconversion since it falls in that small percentage that test posotive outside the window period, or do you have to have pre-existing problems with your immune system to be a late sero-converter?By the way went to the doctor and he didnt want to give me any tests, and told me he thought my symptoms where all in my head and caused by Post Traumatic Stress. thank you

Only a small group of people seroconvert after the 13 week window period, this group includes those who are receiving immuno-suppressive therapy after transplant procedures, cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy and long term injecting drug users.

You are HIV- so we can't help you any more with your questions..it time for you to move on and enjoy the new year.

Is it theoretically possible to be exposed to hiv, carry the virus, infect someone else a day after possible exposure, but not be infected yourself..here i'll cut to the chase. Had unprotected vag. with someone of unknown status, then had unprotected sex w/ex-gf 24 hrs later..I tested negative out to 14 weeks past exposure.. Is it possible that I could of carried some of the virus and infected the ex, but not get infected myself??or is that just plain crazy???? Just having a hard time that I came out of this completly unscathed, and I guess feeling guilty that I could of infected my ex(worst case scenario)..someone I care about deeply.

No this is not possible in any sense. Your 14 week test indicates that you are reliably HIV negative and as such you couldn't have infected anyone else.

Clearly you are experiencing some heavy duty guilt about your sexual behaviours. You might do well to arrange some face-to-face counseling to help you deal with that guilt. Please note we cannot provide you with such support.

You do not have HIV.

Thanks marty..Its just these darn joint and muscle aches that keep me doubting my results(doc wont give me any more blood tests , and atributes this to PTS). I have had 8 tests since my exposure 16 weeks ago(includ. 2 dna pcr tests 18/28dys) With this this amount of testing, can I be sure that I wasnt infected from this onetime exposure? I just dont want to to become even more restless with my testing, cause i dont want to run into the possibility of getting a false posotive..I spend hours on the computer locked in my room. Lost my GF of 6 years, on the brink of losing my job, and damn near close to losing my mind.Am I ever going to get over this ? I dont wont to become one of those posters that states, "I have tessted out to 22 months and still...." I am seeing someone about this but doent seem to help. I wish there was a counseling service that was in tune with hiv fears. I guess thats why I come here.Anti-dep. meds here I come.

worried,

You do not have hiv. No way, no how. Your testing history more than proves that you do not have hiv.

If the therapist you're seeing isn't helping, find a new one.

There's nothing more we can do for you here.

Should I be worried about Hiv 2 from my exposure(unprotected vag intercourse with latin women of unknown status). I read that my 2 dna tests, and 8 of my rapid finger prick test out to 16 weeks, dont catch hiv 2 infection. I did have an oral sab test at 9 and 10 1/2 weeks, which might of covered both hiv1/2(believe it was orasure..given at free clinic...Still experiencing joint and muscle pains, at 17.5 weeks post exposure and just recently had a cold(might of been alllergies), where I developed some sort of red spot on tongue..(looked as thought the papillea where inflamed..So how concerned should I be with Hiv-2?thanks

worried,

You don't need to worry about hiv2. If you did, we would have told you.

I'm giving you that time out you've been warned about. Do not attempt to create a new account to get around your time out because if you do, you will be permanently banned.

You ARE hiv negative. There's nothing more we can do for you here.
