This is Kai, a 10 week old german shephard.

I love german shepards and the all white ones are especially beautiful. We had several growing up and they were the most well behaved of any dogs we ever had (except for my Miss Lily).
Congrats on the new addition.
-
Thanks Wolfie, he is a very smart dog. I've already been able to teach him some basic commands.
-
He is adorable....... Although I was expecting a turtle
Congrats!

When I saw the title, I too thought Turtles. ;D
Beautiful Dog! My son has a purebred German Shepherd from Romania, he's training him to be a search and rescue dog, and most of his bros and sis's are police dogs. Those German Shepherds are amazing. Your's is beautiful!
and Love the turtle pic too, he's all chillin'

Wow, that pic reminds me of the movie American Werewolf in London! Nice dog though.. Kai is a purebred too but from Alabama. The breeder breeds them for the police and military. Kai's father weighed 100 lbs and his mother was 74 lbs.. I think he's going to be a big boy. At 10 weeks he's already 20 lbs..

I've never seen a dog fall asleep in his food bowl.

OMG! So precious! Love Love Love it.

Wow , he is a beauty . That turtle looks huge now and is gorgeous also , cant believe thats the same little guy , didn't know they grew that fast .

I can't believe how big your turtle is now... didn't you have a couple others as well?

What a cute puppy!

She looks quite big in the picture, however, her shell length is just a little over 3 and a 1/2 inches. She will still put on quite a bit of growth over the next year, which they do for the first 2 years. Then the growth really slows down quite a bit. It's sort of a survival in nature thing.. She turned 1 this past September.
That made me think of Wumpy! ;D

Thanks Ann.
I have one other which is of the Chesapeake Bay variation. Her skin is a slate blue in color and has bold lines instead of the speckled dots shown on the white skin above. I'll try to post some pics of her later, but she's a bit neurotic and won't sit still. Both are huge beggars.
Thanks everyone for the compliments on Kai.
-
That is one cute dog. And, I love those ears. I grew up with a German Shepherd. He was very loyal. Congrats on the new addition.
-
that is one adorable pup, they grow up so fast just like kids. take care of him and he'll take care of you.

I see the loyalty already, he is sitting at my feet as I type this.

I didn't think you'd mind, if I posted a video of my dog with his best bud. My dog is the Puggle. His best bud is the Boxer. We think they may be gay. They are in love with each other. We've caught them experimenting..lol.
I thought this video was funny. My Puggle refuses to let his size get in the way.

I don't mind at all, cool vid..
I'm trying to get Kai socialized, but it's not going very well. There is a female pitbull who stays upstairs from us who simply wants to play with him and he's not having any part of it. She gets low and even turns over on her back when she gets close to him and all he does is growl and bark at her.
I hope it's just that he's so young and a bit nerved by her size.
-
Here is an updated photo of the growing Kai. Yes, asleep in the food bowl again. Maybe he thinks we may try to sneak a meal past him without his knowledge, so he likes to be on guard. You can really see the size difference; the boy is growing.

HI THOMAS !~
Kai is growing fast. it's only 3 weeks between the 2 pics.
Any word on his socialization skills? Maybe he's still too young. Pit bulls can be the sweetest dogs on god's green earth. Keep trying. I bet they become good friends.
he is cute. I think he's going to become very protective of that food bowl
-
What a great looking dog!! Congratulations.
Now, what are you putting in the food? Ambien?
It's like a kid in a high chair conking out after too much chow.

Hey Robert, how ya doing? When we moved to Boston last year the apartment complex did not allow pitbulls. Neo (the pitbull) went back to the family I originally got him from. The story behind me getting Neo was due to a coworker cheating on his wife with one of my other coworkers. The wife kicked him and the dog out and he asked me, since I had a fenced in yard at the time, if I would mind taking Neo in. We had him for about 3 years.
Well, him and his wife got back together and when I found out I couldn't take Neo with us I called him to see if he wanted Neo back, and they did. So Neo's back with his old family.
It was extremely hard giving him back and I still miss him dearly as evident by my often posting old pictures of him on facebook.
I'm just having issues with Kai socializing with other dogs here were I live now. It really has not gotten better. Other than my family, he really wants nothing to do with anyone else, and from what I've read this is common with the breed. He's already shown signs of being very protective.
What a great looking dog!! Congratulations.
Now, what are you putting in the food? Ambien?
It's like a kid in a high chair conking out after too much chow.
Thanks Em. I don't know what is up with that falling asleep in the food bit. It does come in handy to show reference of his growth by way of how big he is compared to the food bowl though...lol
I have some bad news regarding my Ornate Terrapin pictured above. She quit eating about 2 weeks ago. I took her to the vet and she has a bacterial infection. The vet gave her a shot of benadryl and he's worried that her kidneys may not be able to handle it. I've raised the tank temp to help stimulate her immune system, but in my experience, this usually does not end well.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

How awesome that most of us are true animal lovers. I love the animal threads here as mine has been my lifeline.
-
I love animals but I'm afraid to get one because if you ever move it complicates your living situation. There's also the whole feeding, watering, attention, etc. I love them but they take up so much time I just don't want that part right now.
-
Very sorry to learn of your turtle's illness -- I hope it can clear the infection.
-

Thanks Em. I can't believe it, but the shot has actually worked. She started eating yesterday again and did so again this morning. She seems to be doing a lot better.
-
When I read benadryl I thought what? Hey, maybe it's just the way of a turtle -- slow and steady wins the race even when medicated. I hope she keeps improving.
-
When I read benadryl I thought what?
My mistake there, it's actually baytril...lol Benadryl, baytril, barbituates, marijuana--it's all good in my hood.

Would you feed me and rub my tummy? You can get my leg going, if ya do.

Well you've got a bombin' buffet for the dear girl to try. Baytril -- good name for a turtle's antibiotic.

Excellent.

Took new photo's of Kai today. He'll be 22 weeks old tomorrow and has grown so much since we got him. He's weighing in at just over 50 lbs. He has also picked up some new tricks rather quickly. It does get bothersome though when he wants to shake my hand while I am eating or drinking my coffee...

I bet the feeling is mutual. Mine means the world to me.

I'm feeling pretty bummed out about Kai today.. A couple of days ago he started limping, I figured he must have hurt his foot while we were out playing fetch the other day.
I took him to the vet this morning and the vet says his right hip is real bad. It could be GHD but the vet said to not give up hope that it is not because Kai is still growing and it might get better.
He's in pain and it hurts to see him this way. They gave him a steroidal shot and some pain medicine. I'm supposed to wait a month to see if it gets better and then we'll go from there. After paying the bill I told the vet the dog and I might soon be homeless if this keeps up. I was joking...
I really hoped when I got a German Shepherd that I would not have to deal with the GHD issues. His lineage papers say nothing about this being an issue with his parents. I feel like I did something wrong and wonder if I worked him too hard while playing.
Sucks....
-
Hey Skeebo,
Sorry to hear the little guy is in pain. Hang in there and here is hoping the vet is correct and he can outgrow this.
Keep us posted..........
Mike
-
Sorry Skeebo ... nothing brings a tear to my eye quicker than seeing or hearing of suffering an animal . Just keep loving him and his joy will be yours .
-
skeebo,
would you mind if I asked what in the heck is GHD?
-
skeebo,
would you mind if I asked what in the heck is GHD?
Sorry Mitch that was a bit of a typo, it's actually referred to as GSHD = german shepherd hip dysplasia. It's pretty common with the breed.
-
ugh.
doesn't sound like much fun.
so sorry.
have no energy to look it up at the moment but hope it is fixable.
seems like many of us here are going through dog/cat trauma.
wishing you the best.
m.
-
Hey skeebo;
I am sorry to hear that Kai is in so much pain. We have a mutt (Golden/Aussie/?? mix) that started really limping after exercise when he was about 1.5 - 2 years old - and our vet said it was hip displasia. It is a long story (which I won't go into here) but we ended up getting a second opinion -- the good news was that it was not hip displasia, it was a torn ACL which can be fixed. The bad news was that it was about $3k to have it fixed.
Anyway, I wish Kai the best,
JM

we went through the ALC surgery too with one of our dogs. $1700. about 10 years ago. vet bills are getting bad these days.
so hip dysplasia can't be fixed? :'(
-
Kai couldn't have landed with a better owner. So the good news is he'll be well loved and cared for by a super hip guy. Our beloved Shep from my childhood suffered this. Given Kai's age maybe he'll get beyond some of it. Do you have access to an acupuncturist ? Some do work on animals.
-
ouch.
doesn't sound like surgery is an option by Em's post. :(
I know you will give Kai the love he needs.

hi thomas.
so nice to hear from you although I don't like the news you bear. That's hard to read. I followed up on Em's links and neither of them say anything about too much exercise. Other than hereditary the one mentions diet but nothing about over exercising so don't let that bring you down. Let's keep ours fingers crossed and hope for the best.
Kai is so handsome.

Thanks for the links EM, definitely informative. I spoke to the vet this morning regarding some blood work we had done on him, everything came back normal. The vet seems pretty confident he may grow out of this. He explained to me this morning that AKC requires German Shepherd breeders to get their hips certified before they breed them, and they do this at the age of two. He said he has seem many German Shepherds display this problem at Kai's age and then by the age of two everything was fine. It's not always the case he said, but I do hope this happens in Kai's next year of life.
Thanks everyone for the kind words and information.
Here is a picture of him . He's 10 months old now and weighs 80 pounds. Sorry for the sideways shot, I tried to fix it on photobucket but it wouldn't upload at all.

He grew up fast there Skeebo!
Hope he grows out of this soon. :)

What a beautiful dog. I definitely hope the hip issue is temporary.
Is that you also in the picture, Thomas?

He is isn't he? He also licks my wife's toes and sleeps in my spot on the bed... perhaps I should be worried. (lol)

I know, it seems like just yesterday he was this little 10 pound runt who didn't like baths... now I struggle to keep him out of the bathtub.

Thanks Betty..
Yes that's me in the pic.

I let Kai go on his first bit of exercise today. Up to this point I've been gradually increasing the distance of his walks. When he saw me grab his ball today he was really excited. I only threw it out about 5 times, I'm still a bit paranoid about him hurting himself. It went good and he seems fine thus far.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that this was just an episode for him.
I also wanted to bring up something that happened here on the forums when I first mentioned his injury. A forum member, I don't want to mention his name because he might not want me to, offered to pay for Kai's care if it had to go further. I was humbled by this gesture... and I am thankful for the offer.
I think when I mentioned above that I told the vet that Kai and I would be homeless if the high bills continued I conveyed the wrong message to some. I just meant the wife wouldn't be to happy about it. But to that member, you know who you are, I do thank you.

American Bulldog/Pitbull mix. He's about 4 months old. It's going to be a challenge with Kai. The pup is use to being around about 10 other dogs of different breeds. Kai will be the challenge; I have a feeling the introduction might be sketchy.
-
Our time in Alabama was short. The company my wife is a quality manager for announced last month they were moving all their production facilities to Mexico. She has since been offered a position in Tampa, Florida and has already started working there. I'm still in Alabama closing up a few loose ends (daughter's school, my job, etc..)
We are having one hell of a time finding a place to live because of our German Shepherd. It seems Florida has an aggressive breed/ban list and every where we have looked has turned us down. We've tried both rental homes and apartments to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas? I can't give him up, he's become part of my heart.
And like always, I have to include updated pics.

Ho hum... my wife just called and said we got turned down by two more today. I've been scanning various breeds (I know, stupid) all night. I'm wondering if I could get my vet to change the breed name on his shot records because that is what I'll have to submit to the home owner or apartment complex we move into. Wishful thinking I know, but as of right now Kai is no longer a German Shepherd. He's either a Swiss Shepherd or a berger blanc suisse and neither of those are on the breed ban list.
I'm going to my vet on Monday and will give one hell of a sob story. He did say German Shepherds were his favorite breed.
-
I can't believe German Shepherds are considered a dangerous breed.
He is a gorgeous dog, both of them are. I hope the situation with the vet works out. Something will have to work out, I totally understand you not giving him up, I wouldn't either.
-
Skeebo,
Check out Pasco county, my mom lives in Pasco county and unless it is a fancy house development or apt. complex most rentals allow all kinds of dogs. There is a house near her for rent but it's probably to far from Tampa and it's only a 1 bedroom.
@ Betty--My Poncho is considered a dangerous breed. :( He's a lab/chow mix and the chow makes him dangerous.
I am lucky that unless you look at his tongue (which is always hanging out of his smiling face) you don't see the chow in him.
I think there is no such thing as a "dangerous breed" just a bunch of scardy-pants, moronic people who decided they needed an excuse to say no to dogs.

I know it sounds corny, but this dog has taught me so much about myself. Living life as an angry person who was so intolerant to change; his loyalty to a fault makes it difficult for me to make a decision that will repay all this with abandonment.
The negative me tells me this will not end well. He's just a dog that I should have never met.

I agree. I would contend that the only thing dangerous about him is how much my heart breaks at the thought of having to give him up.
I'd pray for the very first time on this, but I don't know how-- it would be meaningless.
Grief over this is a gross understatement.
I know, he's just a dog.
-
Its never just a dog . I lost my Zita in July and the thought of you loosing your dog just breaks my heart .
-
Hello Skeebo,
I am so sorry your going through this pain ,such stupid laws, and what you have said is not corny. Dogs remind me to stay in the hear and now, not to hold grudges, to remain loyal to friends .
I would contact any breed organization for German Shepard's , you never know some off the owners may be Landlords.
In UK the breed is also known as Alsatians , probably US also , however if not it would not be a lie if the papers had that on.
I would also place an advert myself. Does the area your looking in have Houseboats? There that's the end off my brainstorm.
All the best
Michael
-
Jeff's right, Thomas. It's never just a dog. I would fight tooth and nail and try everything in my abilities and power to keep him. It's unfair that you would have to give him up.
About prayer, just say what you feel. I'm not a religious person. But there's no saying you cannot pray just because you never have.
I am hoping beyond hope you get to keep him. It's a bunch of b.s. that no one will rent to you. Keep trying, don't give up. I know, being an addict myself, about giving up. But I also know, as an addict, I've been able to connive in some situations where an average person would not. Does that make sense? If anyone can talk a person into something, it's a drug addict. Pull on some old shit, without using the drugs. Dig into your past and pull out all those old abilities to get people to see it your way. But don't give up easy.
Betty
-
I know it's not just a dog. That's mainly my frustration with the situation coming through. But, I think we may have found a house. The wife will go look at it today. By the way, both dogs have amazingly morphed into different breeds.
-
Hope it works out for you. There are enough animal lovers out there that it shouldn't be this difficult. I'd rather rent to animal owners than parents. :)

Zactly. Miss Lily was my last remaining aspect of my previous life. I realize I ascribed humanism to her, but my bond with her was greater than with most true humans.
-
My dog was my child , that is how it feels and how it is for me .
I wish everyone could know the pure feeling of love that can come from looking into the eyes of an animal who you have bonded with .
