The AMG2011 Fundraising Cookbook is Here! Order Yours Now!
« on: December 31, 2010, 07:31:25 pm »
The AMG2011 Fundraising Cookbooks are ready for order! Over a hundred recipes (99 pages) submitted by your fellow forum members!

"Cooking for a Cause
A Collection of Recipes to Benefit AMG2011"

Cost is $10 (includes $1.90 shipping within the continental US).

How to Order:
If using PayPal, the payment should be made to AMgatherings@yahoo.com. In the message portion of the PayPal payment screen please indicate where you would like it shipped. If you wish to pay by check or money order please send a  PM to the Grants committee for instructions.

If you are outside the continental US or if you wish to purchase multiple copies of the cookbook please PM WillyWump for a shipping quote.

After payment is received, please allow 10 days for shipping.

Your purchase will help assist a fellow member(s) to attend the AMG in Seattle in August, a member who would otherwise might not be able to attend. On behalf of the Grants Comittee and the members who submitted recipes, we would like to thank you in advance for your support. Bon Appetit!

*The monetary breakdown of this fundraising effort is as follows...
All productions costs have been donated by Phildinftlaudy and Willywump thus 100% of your purchase price (except for postage) goes into the 2011 Grants Committe fund. The net amount donated after postage costs is $8.10 per book.

All,

There has been some questions and confusion regarding paying via PayPal. Perhaps the instructions should have been clearer in the original post.

For those of you that have never used PayPal:

You cannot just click on the AMgatherings@yahoo.com email link and enter a credit card. Sorry, it's not that easy.

1)You will need to go to PayPal.com and click on "Send Money".

2)Enter the dollar amount ($10.00) and then click send to "Friends and Family". Click continue.

3)This will take you to a page where you enter the email address that you are sending money to, you will enter "AMgatherings@yahoo.com". Click continue.

4)On the next page you will enter your name, address, credit card number (*note- this creates a PayPal account for you).

5)Click submit and the money is sent directly to the AMG account.

There is a charge to send money through PayPal using your Debit or Credit Card ( .59 to send $10). If you link your bank account there is no charge to send money, however you are not required to link your bank account.

If you are uneasy with any of this PayPal stuff, you can always just send a check or money order! To do so just Pm Grants Committe for the remittance address.

Just FYI, I have had a PayPal account linked to my Credit Card and personal bank account for many years with no problems.

Please let us know if there are any questions :)

Will, you've done a great job coordinating this. I've just added $$ to my PayPal account so when that transfer completes (3 days they say) I'll be ordering several copies. Someone close to me wants 5 already! So I'm thinking at least 8 for me for starters.

Hello Fellow Chefs, and Chef Wannabes,

Just an FYI, we are getting PayPal payments coming in that have a Name and Address to send the cookbooks to but no way to attribute them to a Forum member (the screenname is not included). This is fine and not a problem, however if you would like a direct PM acknowledgement and thank you from the Forums Grants Committee then please provide your Screenname in the message portion of the Paypal screen. Otherwise you will only get an email reply from the AMgatherings@yahoo email account.

On that note, we understand that people may want to maintain their anonymity here on the forums and may be uncomfortable with giving their name and address to order a cookbook. Let us state unequivocally that any names and addresses given while ordering the cookbook, or any donations made to the GC will be held in strictest confidence by the Grants Committee, and any personal info will be deleted and destroyed after the cookbooks have mailed.

It's great to see the orders rolling in!

Hey everyone, thanks for the great response to the cookbook. We are getting alot of orders and I'm trying to get them processed as quick as I can :)

Also remember this was not done only by me, Phildinftlaudy (phil) paid for half the production costs, as a donation to the effort, which was not pocket change. He also played a HUGE part in planning the cookbook taking my calls late at night with various procedural questions,etc.. He also is keeping track of all the sales and such. So yay Phil!

But most of all, the people who contributed recipes and those that are purchasing the book are making this a success!

Round of applause for Phil and everyone who participated! What a great way to come together for the AMG Grants Committee, what an amazing group of people we have here :)

We all know a quarter of those calls were for emotional support regarding your tiny balls, and another quarter were phone sex sessions. Or attempted phone sex sessions. Willy, we know you'd do that, phil might maintain his professionalism and resist Willy's advances.

But yes, we appreciate both of your, ahem, "hard" work. And donations of time and money. So who cares if you spend some of that time spanking the monkey together  :P ;D :P ;D

Oops! Let it slip. Well, at least you can look at it this way. I have a feeling the percentage of forum members that come to the forum gatherings section is on the lower side of things. Maybe that will be changing with your post in the Living With HIV forum, but it seems most people don't show up here!

I just ordered 5 cookbooks (one for myself, one for a friend, one for my brother, one for my sister, and one for the parents)

Did it right through PayPal - so easy...

Can't wait to have all the recipes that members have contributed located in one location so I can start trying them out.

I got mine today and I love it!  All the hard work really shows through, I could even wait to get home to open it. I opened it walking home from the mailbox.

Those that submitted recipes can check being published off their bucket lists...I did.  ;D

I received mine today (also opened it while walking into the house from the mailbox.)  It was a wonderful feeling to see the names of my AM friends on the various pages and to know that this effort will help someone attend this summer's AMG.  Please consider supporting this very worthwhile endeavor!

too cold here! :o hell, the second snow within a month's time just finished melting away yesterday. :D These poor Rebs. LOL Everything was closed down for three days cause there was 3 inches of snow and ice. But never fear, March - and Spring - are just around the corner so I'll be back in the pool and in my speedo soon enough. ;)
Time for me to go find a good warm recipe from the book to try for dinner. MMM Bacon-wrapped stuffed chicken breasts sound yummy served with some wild rice and homemade yeast rolls.

Ok Smartasses.

A little history of the mail service and I,

We have a tenous relationship, it's been ongoing for years. It all began with a small skirmish between my carrier and I, it seems you cannot park your car within 20 feet of a mailbox or else you get a nasty note and no mail delivered... Ohh, but he can get out of his little buggy and walk over to my car and put a note on it, but he cant put my mail in the box. I once collected 4 notes in a week (but no mail) I was quite proud of my achievement. I dont even use my mailbox, I do all my stuff online. So all I get is crap. But yet "Newman" finds it necessary to leave notes on my car because he cant deliver his crap. So it's basically a standoff. Although lately I've been keeping the mailbox area clear as AMG stuff is arriving through the mail.

So this little feud has boiled over into the lobby of my neighborhood post office, as "Newman" sometimes works the window.  So this customs forms business is merely continued harassment of me by my nemisis the postman. Hell, now they have me unpacking and repacking books at the window (and no, I will not step aside). You really, really do not want to be the person behind me at the post office.

With that being said, some of you have had your books sent by Priority Mail (on my dime), you can thank Newman for that as he thinks it's funny to tell me what box to use and then changes the price at the window because he knows I will not unpack and repack the same books again.

I will prevail when it comes to the USPS.

-Will

PS- Order more cookbooks so I can pester Newman some more.

I made Phildinftlaudy's "Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken Breasts" today.

Flipping through the book, this recipe caught my eye, so I made a grocery list. I drink a 2-liter of Coke a day and I was down to one, so today was a guaranteed trip to the store anyway LOL

Maybe because of the time of year, but there was no fresh broccoli. I hate frozen broccoli usually because it's mainly the stems. Yuck! So I opted to try a bag of frozen broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. I diced up half an onion and the last two stalks of celery in the veggie keeper drawer of the frig.

Luckily coincidentally, the store had the hugest chicken breasts on sale, so I now have a bunch in the freezer and kept 3 out to use. I've choked the chicken before ROFL but never pounded it, so that was a new experience in the kitchen and tons of fun. I had Chromeo blasting on my headphones and hammered to the beat. LOL

I'm glad I had the toothpicks laid out and ready (along with the cheese, ham and veggies diced up) because I over-stuffed and had a devil of a time keeping them all together (and all the good stuff inside) while I wrapped them in bacon.

The house smelled great while they were cooking. With a side of rice, cranberry orange relish, and a light mushroom gravy - OMG! Neither my mom or I could eat a whole one of those huge stuffed breasts even though they were very delicious! This is definitely a good recipe and one I'll make again.

Yummy! Thanks Phildinftlaudy!

Mike and Jan:

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them --- I have tried different variations on them -- sometimes I make homemade stuffing to stuff them with --- that also has come out yummy.

Made the mushroom gravy covered cube steaks yesterday....

Can't wait til my cookbooks get here - so I can try some of the many recipes that it's loaded with.

don't worry. ;) I've been putting together recipes for next year's fundraiser cookbook.

I have a recipe for "eggnog cheesecake" recipe that doesn't taste at all eggnog-y but is very yummy and well worth making. I will not inflict the "eggnog cake" on anyone or the three pecan pie recipes that I've tried out because none of them were any good at all - the pecan pies were all runny and the eggnog cake was only eggynog-y when I warmed it up and poured eggnog on it LOL.

Oh and my Mom is biffed that I didn't submit any of my holiday recipes like "Jezebel Sauce" ::) or a Christmas/Winter standard "Instant Russian Tea Mix", or "Orange-Glazed Pecans".

But that's next year, lol
Everyone buy THIS year's book and tell us which ones you tried and liked!  ;D
(and be thinking about what you can submit for next year's book!)

I was wondering how you were going to do that.   ::)

RAB   ;)

I forgot to add in the book that you actually have to be in the Australian outback to cook the Croc recipe.. ;D

Are you saying you can't get Croc fillets at your local supermarker? colore me :o

If you can't get Croc fillets then any meat fillets will do... enjoy.

I received my cookbook and LOVE it! Everyone involved did an amazing job and who else but Miss P would give a recipe that takes up FOUR pages, LOL! I really like that it's not your standard cookbook. I appreciate the cooking instructions and tips, some of which I found to be quite funny. The opening quote was quite touching. Again, great job everyone.

P.S. I think I may have to go shopping tomorrow for Skeebo's BBQ salad.

Thanks Holly -
I have to tell everyone that Will came up with the idea and found a way to make it happen.  I have actually had people at work tell me they would like to buy a copy.  Also, because I am in Miami, I have a friend who asked about a "Spanish" translation - which we are looking into - if not for this year's edition then perhaps next year.  We also would like to add a conversion chart for metric system for all those other parts of the world that adopted it or were already there while we in the US are still using whatever our system is callled.

I'm sure other ideas will spring up and next year's book will take the best of this year's and go from there.

Thanks to everyone that has ordered so far and to those that will be ordering -- this is truly "OUR" book.

This is a 9 block walk from my apartment and I can obtain alligator here.

http://www.dangelobros.com/

Also kangaroo, ostrich, etc.

They will ship to all 50 states.  Top notch, reputable for those interested.

There used to be a place in Austin called Alligator Grille where I used to get bombed for Happy Hour. They served Fried Alligator there, dont really remember what it tasted like (probably chicken). But I remeber thinking it was good.

Anywho. I'm headed to the store later to get the ingredients for HippieLAdys Korean Sesame Beef Wraps, If they are anything like what we had in Vegas I will be in orgasmic heaven.

in trying to return to my roots of Southern hospitality,
since JeffInNYC wants my lemon bars, I keep on making them and keep on inviting him down. ;)

better get a move on Jeff, my tangy and sweet lemon bars go fast. :-*

You can find this recipe on pg 87 of the Cooking for a Cause recipe book ;) :D

I think I'm going to try RAB's "Bacon, Swiss & Cheddar Casserole Bread" next (pg77). I have everything on hand but the red pepper and yeast. Since I need more buttermilk (almost time for another pan of cornbread pg75), I can grab these items tomorrow and try out another recipe. ;D So far I'm loving the cookbook!

ROFLMAO  :D

sadly I had some issues with the "bacon, swiss, cheddar bread" - a yeast issue. Though my yeast had seemed bubbly when I mixed the ingredients together, my bread wouldn't rise. According to my friend, google, I mixed up some more yeast and added that into the dough. Finally, I got a rise!  :D So 6 hrs later, it was finally cooked and out of the oven.

Thankfully, it still turned out pretty good! I think I'm going to make a big pot of black eyed peas tomorrow to go with this yummy bread.

All,

Great news! We have had an amazing response to the cookbook, we have sold out our first batch of 45 copies! But fear not, we are putting in an order for a second smaller batch. For those of you that have ordered in the last couple of days there will be a slight delay (10-14 days) in getting your books out as we await the order from the printers.

The 45 copies that have already been purchased has put $364.50 into the Grants Committee Fund! Outstanding! Thanks to each and every one of you who has helped make this happen by purchasing a book! You guys are awesome!

Remember we have more copies on the way so If you havent ordered your book yet now is the time!

Bon Appetit!

Well done on the donations, it really is outstanding.

Just picked up my 5 cookbooks from the post office (they arrived on Saturday - but the mailperson couldn't leave them in the mailbox) - so, I stood in the line of 20+ people at the post office (with one person working and others walking around doing not much of anything) ---- finally, got them - opened the box and I am so impressed.

For those who haven't ordered yet - but thinking about doing so - you won't regret it - they are so professionally done (Thanks Will!).  It is great to read the recipes and see the names of so many members of the forums in print.  This one is a keeper.

I am already getting orders from family and friends - so, hopefully I will be putting in another order for 5 or 10 more soon.

Great job Will (and me  ;D --- nothing like false humility) --- Keep those orders coming!

but since you asked so nicely :D

here's what a mountain of Leatherman's "Southern Cornbread" (pg 75) looks like!  ;D :D

Ahahahahahaha! That's sooooo awesome! I must say however that Leatherman #1 (from left to right) looks a little like he's trying to show off his ass, IMHO. But still an amazingly cool picture! Thanks!

um, do you realize that as a citizen of SC, I'm required by the Republican state legislature and our Tea Party Senator to not only NOT have access to ADAP meds, but to also fly the Confederate flag? ::) :D However, since I'm going to be making and taking lemon bars to the SC Rally to Restore ADAP Funding, if you'll make a batch of lemon bars for me :-* I'll sneak a flag into the picture ;) - a flag of the AMG cookbook. LOL ;D

(how's that for book-promotion Mr. Wump? ;) and I even cross-promoted the rally too)

OMG! That is toooo awesome! And yes, I will make a batch of lemon bars when I get my cookbook in a week or two. And then promptly keep one or two for myself and proceed to pawn the rest off on my mother because I'm desperately trying to lose 70 pounds but she can stay fat, lol.

Hey fellow Chefs,

Theres been a slight delay in shipping some of your cookbooks. Half of the order had smudged covers (the printers put them in the box while they were still wet with ink apparently). I got several orders out today, but the rest will have to go back and be reprinted. I expect all orders to be shipped by next monday.

So dontcha worry, if you havent gotten yours yet, it will be coming.

well, I know I've done this recipe before, and this other recipe is on my list to submit for next year; but I spent yesterday and today baking and wanted to show off my cooking again. LOL

First I baked Chinese Almond cookies that I topped with cherry icing for the training class I taught last night (how to set up the ASO display booth and engage people at community events). Then, as our SC ADAP Funding Rally is tomorrow, and I asked/begged/tempted/and cajoled with bribery to get people to come with an old standby, I did another batch of lemon bars.

The ASO staff didn't think me calling the cookies "AIDS Cookies" :o was too good, so they nicknamed them "Positive Cookies" ::). However, everyone agreed that the name "LemonAIDS Bars" :D was just fine.

Umm, seriously, what idiots! Even I know when I print something off on my household printer not to put the pages together or stick them in any sort of containment device before they're sufficiently dry! Dolts, the lot of them!

That being said, I shall patiently await my batch of cookbooks! I'm sure they'll be well worth the wait!

So are there any left from the second batch? I gave one to a retiring cowoker today. It was kismet because someone brought in homemade lemon bars and she wanted a recipe! I didn't know today was her last day but I had been planning to give her one of the books becuase she bakes well, so I called Santi before he left for work and had him bring it to my work.

Best of all, she wants to buy one for a friend, another lady wants one and yet another wants two!! I will transfer $$ into Paypal for these if we have some left. If not, is there a minimum order for a print run? This makes such a great gift that if I had to buy 10 more I would. Cooks love cookbooks and certainly this has recipes for all skill levels, and they also love the fact that it helps folks attend the Gathering, even if they don't know all the details.

Some people in the office know my story, but I practically came out poz today, without exactly saying so, to some folks I would never have told otherwise.

Fellow Chefs and AMG supporters,

Check this out! Over $500 raised in sales of the "Cooking for a Cause" Cookbooks!

The sales greatly exceeded our expectations and the success of the fundraiser was a result of one factor....YOU!

As we close out the cookbook sales the Grants Committee and the members it serves would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to everyone that participated. The success of this endeavor rests squarely on the shoulders of those who submitted recipes or purchased books. $500 is a substantial amount of money and will go far in helping one or more of our fellow AIDSMEDS members attend the gathering in Seattle, a member who would not otherwise be able to attend. This is truly something we can all be proud of.

When Phil (the numbers man) gets settled back in, he will give us a final tally on the sales amount.

Great work guys and gals!

Although the Cookbook sales have closed you still have a couple days to make a general donation to the AMG Grants Committee. Any amount is appreciated and no amount is to small. For donation info please PM the Grants Committee

Is it too late for me to submit a recipe for "Roast Chicken Chez Louis"?  It's marinating in the fridge as we speak.

WooHoo! that's great news about the cookbook sales! ;D

Of course, I think, and I'm sure others agree, that you deserve a special thanks too, Will. It's easy for people to say something should be done but it takes a special person to actually get something done. I know you worked hard on putting this project together, collecting and editing recipes, getting the book published, and finally getting the book delivered. So Thank You for all the work you did!  :-*

Skeebs,

I used 5 jumbo egg whites and 1 cup of marshmallow cream (no additional sugar).  Of course always use a clean metal bowl and a good hand mixer to whip it into shape.

My version is easy to make:

1) Make a square pan of chocolate brownies (any mix will do).  I dont use the ones with nuts but hey that would work if you want to use them.  Let these cool completely and place on a foil covered baking sheet.
2) Take 1 block of Breyers® all natural vanilla ice cream that has been frozen hard and slice it in half.  I slice it sideways across instead of from the top down.  Place the two halves on top of the uncut brownie layer.
3) Slather the meringue generously around the sides and on top of this then pop it into a 400 degree oven.  This will not take long to start browning.. keep a close eye on it.  When it starts to brown slightly, turn the oven on broil (500 degrees) and when the top heating element gets nice and red, the Baked Alaska should be brown enough.  Pull it out, slice and serve ASAP.

I made this recently and it was a huge hit.  I doubt many folks would turn their nose up at this desert and it really is easy to make.  By the way, that meringue with marshmallow never fails or falls when used on pies either.

Ahh I've never heard of meringue made that way.  I normally use sugar and egg whites.  That marshmallow cream must help get the peaks perfect.  Thanks for sharing it.   Do you beat the egg whites completely before adding the marshmallow cream or do you start with everything combined?

No. I start out with just the egg whites and beat them maybe a minute then put in the marshmallow cream well before the whites actually get stiff.  When I add the marshmallow I crank the mixer up to almost high and it whips up nicely.  A friend of my mom's told me about using that marshmallow stuff this past summer.  It makes it nice and shiny too.

When it comes to cooking and recipes, I share all.

Speaking of Klonopin you should see the video I made and put up on facebook when I was zonked on it last week -- I took a Gaultier sarong and turned it into an Islamic hijab and sat there making faces wearing some McQueen sunglasses that I bought in London in the late 90's.

Dinner tonight will be grilled swordfish with fork-crushed purple potatoes and shallots, and sauteed asparagus in garlic, followed by chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting.  Possible palate cleansing with a blackberry cabaret sorbet.

That sounds delish ... I'm visiting a friend and am having a hankering for some fried chicken and potato logs from the truck stop next exit down from his house .

Oh I would love to see that video , link please . It will take me back to my tweaking days when I used to fall asleep on camera for all to see .

I hadn't cooked anything out of the cookbook for a while; but I made a BIG bowl of the "Bean and Bacon Coleslaw" for a 4th of July weekend cookout.  ;D Since it's only 45 days until we meet up in Seattle, I thought I'd post a picture of this recipe from the cookbook.

Either the handle on that bowl is a bit odd-looking or your photochop skillz are da bomb.

Now, I may be the exception, but I had never heard of bean and bacon coleslaw. That's some serious gas in the making  ;D

pg 26 in "Cooking for a Cause - a collection of recipes to benefit AMG2011"  ;)

personally, I don't get gassy from cabbage (gosh, how I love sauerkraut and chow-chow), and there really aren't enough kidney beans in the recipe to be that much of a problem.

boy howdy was that some down and dirty photoshopping :D (although I actually use Paint Shop Pro not PhotoShop). Look at the crappy edging around the bowl and my hair LOL; but a pix of the coleslaw, a pix of me on a raft in the pool, and 3 mins of crappy editing and voila! another pix of disproportionate food.  ;D

is that your recipe, leatherman?
yep. ;)

as I said I haven't made anything out of the book for a while, so I haven't posted any pix from any recipes for a while. As I had never posted a pix of this one, and as it's summer here in the states and a cold coleslaw salad was appropriate for the 4th and summertime, I thought I'd post a pix of what we took for the cookout at my brothers. We also made a crockpot full of au gratin potatoes but I never submitted that recipe and so didn't take any pix of it.

I did make lemon bars too (another recipe I submitted) but I had already posted pix of them. Besides I cheated and made these from a box. LOL

Since I've got the book back out, I guess I should see what else would be good for Summertime fare and try someone else's recipe soon. ANybody got a suggestion? Has anybody else made anything from the cookbook?  ???

I've had the Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken Breasts, the Chicken and Dumplings, Spanish Swiss Steak, One Pan Chicken and Stuffing Bake, Cube Steaks with Mushroom Gravy, Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs, Shrimp Salad.

All of which were scrumptious, my favorite so far is BAcon Wrapped Chicken BReasts! With Chicken and Dumplings a close second.

Damn it, I still wish I'd have ordered the book.  Think I can find a copy on ebay or craigslist yet?

I bet a 2nd run would sell pretty well.

I miss "Have the best day ;D" Michael. Wonder what he's been up to recently? I hope he's just still so much in love that he doesn't have time to post here.

Who submitted the most recipes in this cookbook?
Hopey-Curey and Sonoma submitted the most, like 15 each. Obviously we had to thin those 2 out so they wouldnt take over the cookbook :)

Somehow I think PhilD ended up with the most published.

Read previous post dayuummm it - I only had 4 published ---  now, had it been an X-Rated Photo Cookbook then I would have taken the prize for most posted

-Phild (who prefers to go by my drag name ---- Ima Ho).

[retracted - except for the part about only publishing 4 - and about if it had been an X-Rated Photo Cookbook - and about me winning the prize if it was that --- and about the drag name, Ima Ho ---- other than that, retracted  ;D ---- had to add an emoticon as we seem to be short on those this evening.]

Sorry we sold out. It's quite possible there may be another one for AMG2012.
