So, it's been an interesting week.

I learned a particularly interesting bit of news from a good friend of mine... namely that one can in fact default on one's student loans and have them go into collections... but if you pay them back faithfully, you can still get student loans.  This bit is important later.

I called the collections people, who really are very nice when you give them money, and have that issue sorted away for now.  I decided against consolidation.  It seemed too good to be true and therefore probably was.  I'll do this the harder-for-now-but-probably-easier-in-the-long-run way.

Now, back in 2004, I had attempted to get into VCU in Richmond... they refused to let me in because William and Mary had put an academic hold on my record... and VCU said that they were going to honor that hold and not let me enroll.  I assumed the hold was there because I was one of the worst students in the history of William and Mary... but one of its best drinkers.

Note the use of the word "assumed."

Armed with the knowledge that one can get more money if one is good about paying back existing loans and feeling good about myself for doing something about it, I decide to call William and Mary to see what the deal was with the academic hold and what I'd have to do to get it removed... because I'm starting to think that getting a degree would be a good idea.

I had mentally prepared myself for writing sob stories and filling out scads and oodles of paperwork to get this hold striken.

So, while on the phone, I learned that the hold had been placed on my record because I technically hadn't declared an official major as a junior.

I also learned that since my student account was inactive (read that: "the campus no longer smells like booze, sin, and failure because my filthy carcass ain't on it no more), removing the hold and freeing me academically from the bondage of not being able to get transcripts or show my face at universities was a matter of simply saying, "I don't go to William and Mary anymore."

They did it while I was on the phone with them.

It took two seconds.

This week, I learned that when you call people to see what the fuck is going on, not only are they nicer to you than you fear, but your assumptions can be proven wrong and what you thought would be two months worth of work can really be done in a teensy fraction of that time.

I also learned that "permanent records" might be permanent, but editing is the great equalizer.

Free at last, free at last... thank God almighty, my academic record is free at last.

I hope to start taking a couple evening classes at VCU in the fall... which I'll be paying for out of pocket until I can show that I'm no longer a dirty, dirty whore nonpayer.

Trying to finish up undergrad.

I dropped out as a junior... so all I have to finish is my major... and yeah.

Why they let 21 year olds make their own academic decisions is beyond me.

In the battle of booze over books, what do you think wins?

posting in caps is considered shouting and rude.

it also makes you look like an internet dweeb.

and it's harder to read for people who even bother to wade through your tripe.

History.

I should have listened to my parents who told me to do that when I was 19 and went for a psych major.

Ha ha ha!

Great news Benji. Studying is something that makes life worth while. I am sure you will do well in whatever you choose to study and will make a difference in this world. I have a major in fine arts, a masters in education, and minors in science and social studies. Now I am getting another masters in social work. The funny thing is that I have decided recently that I really would like to be a visionary. I just do not know where I can study that. So here I am on AIDS meds. com.
Fondly, Peter
