OK, so the results are in and my breath test in the GI-Clinic reveals THIS:
SIBO = Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Syndrome, I do have bacterial overgrowth :-[
This has nothing to do w/ HIV/AIDS, however it's worse if you do have a compromised immune system
so my GI-doctor tells me......
1. is it treatable.......YES
2. what do they do for this, The GI-doctor wrote out a script for DXYCYCLINE or XIFAXAN ( Rifaxiuin)
I'll pick up whatever he wrote tomorrow, after I see my ID-Doctor for my 4 month checkup
3. do they suggest any type of diet...YES..it's called the SIBO diet, and what they suggest:
Diet for IBS and SIBO
1.Veggies: no peas or celery, all have to be cooked, nothing can be raw, so bye bye fresh salads :(
2. Fruits: only berries or bananas, no uncooked Fruits of any kind with the exception of the 1st ones mentioned, so no raw fruits ( sorry guys :D :D :D)
3. No Milk or Dairy, no more Ice Cream :(
4. Lean meats only, chicken or fish and some red meats without any fats
5. Grains: white rice, oats, white breads/pasta, no more whole wheat breads :(
Hopefully I can now get a handle on all this IBS and Diarrhea :-* Mark , you were correct about some of this, dam, I love this man :-*

YES, me too, I'll keep everyone posted, on how well the antibiotics work for me, and the SIBO- diet. now I know why I was losing so much weight, usually I stay around 200LBS, but, now I'm like 190LBS, and kinda thinner than I used to be , not only have I lost the pounds, but, I've lost muscle too ??? I kinda find it interesting, that this isn't AIDS-related, as it's kinda like wasting syndrome :-[

Hi Dennis
Its always good to have a sense of control over whats going on with one's body...and this sounds very positive.

no raw fruits...hmm.. :D well, I'm aged fruit so I'm not considered raw anymore.. :D
no ice cream? .. :(
You already eat pretty healthy so is this a big change in your diet?
-
Sounds almost like C. Dif. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Not really, I already know what type of foods I can digest, and what I cannot, so No not a big change ;)

Yeah, it sure sounds like it, but SIBO & IBS isn't contagious ;) so I was happy to hear about that :D C. Diff is
contagious ???

OK, you all wanted me to keep you updated on how the GI-Dept. is gonna treat my Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Syndrome , so here is what my GI-doctor subscribed me, I'll pick it up on Monday ...... Rifaxiuin (Brand name: XIFAXAN) has anyone ever taken or heard of this before? any side effects, any thing I should know?
-
Is this an antibiotic?
-
Is this an antibiotic?
yup
-
I've never heard of it...but I hope it works for you.

I do too Ronnie but, the GI-Doctor tells me it will come back, like it always has in the past for the last 15 yrs.
so they really can't KILL IT ??? and it is part of my disability along with teh AIDS :-[ so, we all have our health deli-mas I suppose , I've lived with it for this long, so I'll take whatever relief I can get even if it's for a short time ;)
-
I've never heard of that antibiotic, but I hope it helps you. And yes, C Dif is contagious. I visited a client of mine in the hospital who had it, and I had to wear a face mask, and wash my hands well when leaving (even though I had no physical contact with him).

Yeah Betty, that is some NASTY STUFF, that c. diff ??? do anyone of you know how you can even get c. diff? it sure doesn't seem to be very common :)

You can google "C Difficile," and find information on it. When my client was in the hospital, I read about it, but it's been awhile, and I can't remember. I believe Web Md has info on their website. Maybe it can be air born? I know when the nurse's aid came in to take my client's vitals, she was totally robed up-big head mask, gown, and gloves.

Yeah, Thanks Betty, I'll look it up, I'm kinda at a loss that they cannot really get rid of my SIBO, but it is treatable :-[

Well, so look at it as just another condition you have to be careful with. And I can sympathize-I have diabetes, they can't get rid of it, but it is treatable. And tons of other things- diverticulitis, arthritis etc. It sucks getting older.
-
OK, so I picked up the antibiotic Rifaxiuin (Brand name: XIFAXAN) this morning @ the RX and when I ask what was the price of this they said it was $182.50 ??? BCBS WTF? so, I ask them what is the UNM RX price of this drug, they said they didn't carry it >:( well by then I was LIVID, so they left me @ the counter for a good 20 min or so, when they came back, they told me that it's was only $20.00 w/ UMN-cares, so things were looking up, and I paid that 20 and got the hell outta there quick ??? WTF? Thanks for nothing
Obama, you SUCK Mr. Obama-care my ASS ??? what is up with all these different drug prices, it's like they
are all attached to the fucking Stock-Market or some SHIT ::)

Hey Dennis...so Have you altered your diet any? Whats for dinner?
Modified to add: I noticed in another thread you drink sports drinks and work out. Kurt does too. But he buys the powdered form of Gator Aid and Crystal Lite and mixes his own. Its not only cheaper that way, but you can dilute with water as needed. We keep some former Gator Aid bottles around and refill them with our own concoction.
-
Hey Joel, thanks, I can drink the powdered Crystal Lite, it's cheaper and taste way better than Gator Aid
I have some, I didn't really have to change my diet much, I already know what foods my GI-tract can digest
so I stay clear from them, but this Rifaxiuin (Brand name: XIFAXAN) makes me dizzy & light headed it's 550mg
twice-a-day, for 14 days, and it's very strong, GI-doctor says it will kill just about ANY infection you might have, well, we'll see ::) I'm glad Kurt is doing well ;) I bet that makes you a happy man, Joel, dear
life is too dam short, not to be having any fun :-*
-
You're in very good company.
Not only have I heard of SIBO but I've taken XIFAXAN. It's coated so that it doesn't breakdown in the stomach like other antibiotics. I took one course and it cleared up the SIBO. I only knew there was a problem because of all the belching I was doing. If you do a search in the forums I'm sure I posted about it way back when. I didn't have any side effects from taking it either.
Did you have to do the breath test? I remember having to drink this sort of sugar water and then breath into these test tubes about 20mins apart. Anyway I hope the XIFAXAN works for you too. I did experience another bout of it about 6 months ago but again one course of it was all it took to get rid of it.
Good luck!!!

Well so says my GI-doctor, he can treat it, but I've had it for so long ( 15yrs.) that he's not sure he can get rid of it altogether, the damage is already done after so long, and it will come back, I'm halfway thur the XIFAXAN treatment with one more week to go.....
As far as I can tell it's back with a vengeance (or I must have eaten something
I shouldn't have) and, yeah that hydrogen breath test I had take that, and I FAILED big time in 1 hour , I didn't have to stay for the whole 3 hrs. as they found bacteria , this is something I'm gonna have to live
with I've done this long, just teh aids ???
-
I'm sorry to hear that. It really sucks especially since Xifaxan is just one more expensive drug.
-

Yeah that Xifaxan cost $182.50 for a 14 day supply, it's very expensive even w/ BCBS ??? Today is my last day of dosing, nothing has really changed much, my GI-problems did go away during the 1st week, but they are BACK
just like the GI-doctor said it would, and that SIBO diet isn't working, back to the drawing board I guess :-[
-
Wow Dennis,
Sorry to hear the recent treatment didn't seem to help.
I wish I had advice to give you, but all I have is positive energy I am sending your way.
HUGS,
Mark
-
I'm sorry to hear that Dennis . Is there any other treatments you may could try ?
-
Hey , Mark & Jeff, Not sure, but, maybe The GI-doctor can come up with something else, he says that I do have GI- decease and wants me to continue follow ups & whatever treatment they can do, he was very nice told me "That's OK Big Guy you just come here now and we'll try to help you" ;) Thanks for all the well-wishes
form everyone, and I will keep this thread ALIVE form time to time w/ the latest updates on my on-going treatment, of SIBO ;)

Dennis

:-* that's just one of many many antibiotics they can try, I see my GI-doctor next month, I'm sure he'll know what to do next ;) I'm not gonna give up on that SIBO diet, I'm sure it will take some tweaking :)
