Is HIV-AIDS going to play a role in this election?
« on: June 29, 2007, 12:46:10 pm »

I was intrigued to see HIV playing such a prominent role in last night's Democratic debate. Several strong statements about HIV were made by candidates, which in a climate dominated by discussion about the war and other top-tier domestic issues, seemed surprising - but pleasantly so. Of course, I recognize that this a Democratic platform, and the issue will no doubt go away when the parties goes head to head in the general race.

Briefly article, but links to a video about HIV in the '08 election cycle.

The only way HIV will play a part in the '08 election is if:

1) Aid to Africa is discussed;

2) One of the candidate's relations comes out poz;

3) A candidate is perceived as being too gay-friendly (not very likely) and the religious right tries to use us as a wedge issue.

I predict that except for a certain squishiness on the part of Dems, domestic HIV/AIDS will not even merit a whisper.

Actually Hillary is very Ryan White funding aware as far as it goes, and has been highly critical of the Bush administration's 6 years of flat funding.  Her commentary last night was only a repeat of statements she made in the local NY media market during the last funding go around, and she's very aware that on a national level there's an crisis in rural areas.

I agree it won't be any sort of crucial issue in the general election, but I do think it will be mentioned.  It's the one thing that worked up the African American crowd last night and they're a major voting block for Democrats.  Also, as a general rule I don't think it's a very difficult issue to make in a general election that we should be helping US citizens before helping African countries.

If every HIV+ person in the US moves to New Hampshire, then you'll get a debate.

I don't think you'll hear much about HIV/AIDS in the upcoming elections. You'll hear more on illegal immigrants than HIV and AIDS. I doubt you will even hear that much about health care. Fossil fuels and fuel alternatives, will probably up stage health care.

I agree. I don't believe HIV/Aids, will be that much of an issue either. It's going to be about immigration, Iraq, national security, and health care, education. Not neccessarily in that order.

So far just your typical pandering. I loved when Joe Biden,the guy who said Obama was a "clean" african american said he and Obama had been tested. Obama quickly added in that he was tested but with his wife, not Biden, as if he feared some might think Biden and he were a couple.  Really funny.  If Biden was Republican the media would have run him out of this race by now for his Quayle like clusterfucks. I still have to think that aneurysm a few years back caused some lasting damage.

Has Joe Biden even declared? I know he was interested, but following his "compliment" of Obama's hygiene and eloquence any hope was pretty much sunk. I believe that ruining his chances for serious consideration for candidacy for president constitutes sufficient "punishment", Jakie.

Surely you don't think that Bush's smear of McCain's "black baby" was overreported?

As a lifelong resident of the shores opposite the Nation's Capital, I can assure you that HIV/AIDS will not be a critical element in presidential politics, despite the Democratic sppechifying at Howard University this week, unless HIVers, their families, and their providers storm congressional candidates -- both House and Senate -- with intense questioning first.  Particularly worthy of hammering are the Republican incumbents who voited against repealing the federal restrictions on the District of Columbia regarding public funding of syringe exchange, a scientifically proven method of reducing HIV and hep risk for intravenous drug users and a conduit for leading IDUs towards treatment.

Everyone on these boards who is elegible to vote in the U.S. needs to be registered and then be in the face of congressional candidates and state legislative and executive candidates... hell, even local council and mayoral candidates...so they understand that we are taxpayers and citizens, too, who will be around dozens of years to hold them accountable if they neglect our population.

ACT UP!  FIGHT BACK!  FIGHT AIDS!

Cheers,
David

Bucko, the question is,does Biden know if he has declared,he was in the debate so I guess he must think he has.
If the South Carolina thing with McCain really occured, and you have to wonder about anything a nutjob like McCain says,it was done by groups supporting Bush,Bush did not actually say it in public. Biden has a habit of saying incredibly stupid things in public from his own mouth, much like W and Quayle.  And yes we did hear much more about the South Carolina stuff than we have heard about Bidens clusterfukcs. I have not heard one singe reference to Bidens comments on him and Obama getting tested after the first day, and very little on the racist thought that had to contribute to the "clean african american" comment.
