HIV case manager?
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:11:44 pm »
Hi there, so my boyfriend recently tested positive for HIV, and spoke to an HIV center here in our city, which recommended him an "HIV case manager' which to make an appointment with. I am pretty clueless about this whole process, so i was just wondering what exactly is the job of the case manager? Thanks!

In my experience, they are an advocate for you. There is a lot that needs to be taken care of, and they guide you to the right organizations for help. They have a lot of knowledge about the ins and out of getting treatment.

I'm not 100% sure really, as mine dropped off the face of the planet after I started treatment. That being said, it was useful for the beginning!  ;D

I never had a whole lot of use for a "case manager."  Most of the ones that I ever encountered were probably the most depressing persons that I had ever met and focused, built their world around what they COULD NOT DO, other than what they could do.  I pretty much did most of my own ADAP sign up; however, in some areas such as that dirty, nasty Florida you will need the ASO, which is where the case manager is.  The ASO in FL, at least, has the Ryan White money for physician and dental appointments.  Alianza in Roswell, New Mexico was probably the worse for this.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the ASO?
AIDS Service Organization.
these can be testing centers, orgs which do case management (help you fill forms, refer to doctors, navigate the state and federal waters for assistance), an actual health care clinic, or any combination of the above.

I am a case manager at an ASO and we do quite a bit for people.  Of course, not everyone has the same need as another, so it depends on how able the person is to do things on their own i.e. find a doctor, get insurance, help with all forms government, like Medicaid, disability, food stamps etc.   We also do home visits, sit with people when they're extremely ill and/or in their last days (though that is not necessarily required), help client's families, friends and partners with education about HIV, and believe it or not, we provide a little therapy, though none of us are licensed therapists.  I know clients, mostly my addicts, call quite often wanting to unload about something and they have no one else to turn to, and are not willing to get into therapy.  Even the ones in therapy call sometimes because the next appointment with their therapist is a ways off.

I'm fortunate in that I also live with AIDS besides working for an ASO.  No one else at the ASO I work at is HIV+.  I"m also fortunate in dealing with addicted clients (my boss seems to give all the addicts to me), in that I'm also a recovering drug addict and can offer some support without have expectations that my addicted clients will do anything suggested.

I'm sorry for anyone who has had a bad experience with a case manager at an ASO.  Where I work my boss doesn't stand for incompetence and will fire someone on the spot.
