I suppose that is what I'm feeling -- the generation gap -- because I get frustrated when I am trying to read posts where people use "2" instead of "to" and "4" instead of "for".
(4 example: this is 2 hard 2 read !) It always reminds me of those old high school year books where someone wrote "2 sweet 2 be 4 gotten".....I hated it then, hate it now...... would it kill ya to make one more keystroke? It actually takes me longer to read it with the number 2 in the text, because my brain doesn't process it correctly.
I guess this is the way it is going 2 B, 4 ever.

I sympathise. All this internet shorthand and "1337 (leet) speek" leaves me cold too. We must be turning into cranky old queers. ;)

As someone who writes, it makes me shudder to see how unintelligible netspeak has become. I don't >3 it. I don't >3 it one bit.

I honestly can't see why people can't make one or two more keystrokes to write something legible and intelligible (is that a word?).

In truth, I can't say much about the kids..all my friends think I have fallen completely off the deep end....I've started pronouncing HIV as "hive" instead of
H-I-V. Therefore, I say things like "my hives sure are acting up today" or "these hives are driving me nuts"....

How do I understand you! And the truth is that this happens in many languages. And you'd better don't even mention this fact to the kids --- let alone attempt to make them change! Besides, kids are the easy target here, for most adults indulge on doing that as well. And it becomes a mess!
The last time I saw some of my nephews and nieces, we discussed about this subject. Well, I'm afraid it has become a lost cause. In fact, they use and abuse of two beautiful languages: Portuguese and French. For me, the worst is what they do with French. However, I think that perhaps a solution is is view...for I threatened not to read their garbage any longer ;D

Oh Alan, I guess I'm getting old too. Glad I'm not the only one with this pet peeve.
Another one (although I don’t see it much in these forums) is when people eliminate capitalization completely and write everything in lowercase. Other literary abominations I’ve seen include:
Aids. Aids are things that assist, like walkers or canes, or people who volunteer.
AIDS is an acronym. Acronyms are compiled from the first letter in a series of words, and are therefore written in UPPER-CASE. The one that really gets me is the misuse of apostrophes.
Aid's. What the hell is Aid’s please? That implies something belongs to Aids. Whoever that is.
B 4 it was E Z R to read things, now it's all 2 much 4 me 2 cope with. :-*

Thank goodness I'm not the only old fart on the forums who trips up over the use of 2 and 4 rather than the appropriate words. It actually makes me stop reading and go back to process it. In the newspaper business, this would have been taboo. Of course, that was back when reporters were able to write.
Punctuation is also one of my pet peeves, although, from reading some of my own posts, you couldn't tell it.
Inappropriate use of apostrophes is a good way to get my goat. This is especially true when people use contractions or make something possessive. AID's makes no sense whatsoever. It would have to be AIDS', used as a possessive, which would logically be very difficult.
I guess I spent too many years as a writer/editor. It is too, not to, when you mean as well or also. It is you're, not your, when you mean the contraction of you are.
See, never get me started. Of course, most of the young people I know can't write a proper sentence. Come to think of it, most of the old farts can't either.

... Ughhh
Another thing that irks me is the misuse of e.g. versus i.e. It's proper to say "off-white", i.e., the color that resembles white but isn't pure white. Or "off-white", e.g., ecru, cream, vanilla. One explains with different words, the other gives examples.
DanielMark: Sometimes you'll see "aide" as in home health aide (home care nurse) ... But who cares right? Bad spellers certainly don't :D

I remember when I was a kid. My mom ate these little chocolate caramels for weight loss. I ate one once and was worried, because I was so thin, that I would waste away to nothing. The product was called the "Aids" weight loss plan. Hmmm, wonder if they are still in business.

Add me to the list. I have to read the post really slowly just to understand it. Drives me nuts. And don't get me started on text messaging with the phone...Why don't they just pick up the phone and talk to the person? And how do they text so fast with those damn little buttons? Which I can't see without my reading glasses.

Add me to the geezer list. I won't read those posts. It is true that many of the offenders here are not kids. Maybe it takes a split second more to add a couple of keystrokes, but I cannot find any good justification for it.

On the subject of unneeded apostrophes, how about using "it's" for "its"?
It's is a contraction of "it is" or "it has."
Examples:
It's a nice day.
It's been raining
Its is the possessive form of "it."
Examples:
Every dog has its day.
Don't expect to be rewarded for honesty; it's its own reward.

Bartro, my mother had those. I ate one and it not only took my weight, it gave me the real meaning to Aids. Damn I wish she was still alive, I would blamed her, for having those Aids around the house. I can tell you one thing, once you ate one, you didn't eat another. ;)

The diet candy was actually spelled AYDS. They were quite poplular in the 70s and early 80s.
Their commercials now provide quite a giggle.
