Post by: Alex1978 on January 14, 2007, 12:46:27 pm
Hello! I had unprotected oral sex and protected anal or vaginal intercourse 3 weeks ago. A week after intercourse  I started feel sick, had headache, temperature ~99,1. The last 4 nights I have severe cold night sweating. Am I HIV+? I had been very nervous and stresfull during last 2 weeks.

You and me both and everytime you look up drenching night sweats or just night sweats on the internet HIV is always said to be a major concern...I'm dealing with the same thing.

Alex,

Protected intercourse is NOT a risk for hiv infection. Getting a blowjob is also NOT a risk for hiv infection. The only oral sex that carries anything of a risk is GIVING a blowjob, but even that is very low risk and unlikely to result in hiv infection.

Symptoms or the lack of symptoms mean nothing when it comes to hiv infection, only testing will tell you your hiv status.

Although you do NOT need testing over the specific incident you bring to us, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Keep using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Take a deep breath.  You're probably sick, but probably not from HIV.   Night sweats are caused by a large number of possible nasty little bugs and other conditions.  (mono, diabetes, anxiety)....   Go see the doctor.

I can't get this possibility out of my head to be HIV+. I visited doctor last week. Today I received my blood and urine test results. The doctor said thad blood test is OK, but urine test could be better. I would not like to tell doctor I`m scared about HIV. What should I do? I still have a temperature ~99.1 and night sweats which makes me realy depressed and stressed. HIV test will be able made only after 2.5 weeks when six weeks will be gone from the distrustful intercourse.

Geesh, you don't have to do anything except to move on. You didn't have a risk, you didn't do anything risky and that is all there is to it.

Anything less than 100 is not considered a fever. As you have already been told you were not at risk during this recent incident. Condoms provide very effective protection. They really do the job so keep on using them everytime you have intercourse.

Whatever is going on symptomatically has nothing to do with HIV. If you still have concerns discuss them HONESTLY with your doctor. It won't change the situation. This is still not an HIV problem, but it's always good to level with your doctor as fully as possible in order to get the most accurate diagnosis, including eliminating what is NOT an issue.

Cheers,

Four weeks are gone from the distrustful intercourse and I have made HIV test. Results are negative. When should I testing for HIV again?

Your next annual physical. You didn't need to test the first time. End of subject.

Many thanks for all yours answers  :)

But... I`m still scared of being HIV+. My doctor ordered sonogram of my thyroid yesterday. I have made it today and sonogram showed thyroid is more active, little bigger as it should be and it has cysts. Could the thyroid problems related with HIV? Tempearature and night sweats are gone now, 4 1/2 weeks after the distrustful intercourse. The fact that all symptoms (night sweets, head ache and temperature) are gone away in one day makes me more stressful.

Whatever your thyroid problems are they have nothing to do with HIV.  The activities you were involved in are NO RISK activities.  The sooner you shift your focus away from HIV as the cause the sooner you can find the real underlying issues.

And if any troubling symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

Given what you have reported, they have nothing to do with HIV. Period.
