Osbourne's tears

While I appreciate yet another celebrity bringing attention to the issue of HIV/AIDS, I can't help but be a little put off by Kelly Osbourne's display of sobs and tears as she announced that a member of her extended family has HIV. Yes, a part of me feels for them having been through the ringer on that myself. But another side questions the merit behind sobbing uncontrollably at a microphone for an AIDS benefit. It feels cheap and misleading.

I recognize that a lot of folks need to realize that HIV is still out there, and for that I'm glad it's being spotlit here. But more than that, this smacks of yet another example of how the media (and I'll just go ahead and lump in celebrities) are miscasting how this disease is seen by the general public. Her little show would have been understandable had this been 1984, not 2007.

to be honest my first thought was 'she bloody better have checked with whoever it is before she said that cos otherwise she's just disclosed on their behalf to all the world'

call me cynical but having been the victim of both (a) friends disclosing thinking they were doing nothing wrong and (b) people treating my status as a item of gossip, im worried that some unknown-to-the-public relative of the osbornes is now gonna get hunted down by the newspapers and have their life ripped apart. i'm hoping that's not the case and that they had previously given their permission. however i do think her motives and tears were genuine.

ideal situation: it's either her or her brother (not because i wish them any ill but because they are already living in the public eye), they decided to tell the world, they got it from sex, and are now going to use their fame and status to make the general public finally woke up to the fact that hiv isnt just a gay or african disease and started realising it can happen to anyone
