when i found i was postive 3/6/10

i found out i was hiv positive my first semester of college march 6 2010 .I was 18. A man came to the college and talked to us about his hiv story . Immediately after his speech me and my cousin went to this van that was outside doing hiv testing . I was 95% sure i was going to come out negative . After i came out negative i had planned to always use protection so i could be 100% sure. Me and my cousin go into the van we fill out questioners about our personal life. She took the finger prick test first i went in write after her . The social worked told us we would have to wait 20 mins for the results. 20 mins go by and they call my cousin to the testing room . She comes out says "negative" i was so relived . I expected to hear my results soon after since we took the test nearly seconds between .Ten minutes had passed when the social worker called me to the back room where the nurse practitioner and the doctor was i found this odd because they didn't no do this with my cousin . The social worker then tells me "the test came back reacted" I broke down in tears. I was crying to complete strangers for about 15 mins. After the 15 mins i rushed to the front of the van i told my cousin lets go . She said whats wrong and i told her i am hiv positive. She then stood in shock . I pulled her off the bus . When i went on that bus i was the happiest college student everything seemed like they were falling into place i still contained my innocence. When i left that bus i was a hole different person i didn't even recolonize myself it was all down hill from there. I knew i would never be who i was again.

What an interesting story. I can relate to the shock but lord I cannot imagine being 18 and getting that news. What a truly strong person you must be. Congrats on your 3 years of progress, and here's to many many more happy years to come!!

Thanks will it was crazy . i was a sore loser for a long time. i put my self threw alot but in nov '12 i decided to start medication which i was scared to start . But knowing that it is being taken care of helps me sleep at night . i dont think about it as much and im not depressed.

welcome to the forums!  thanks for sharing your story. finding out when you are just starting college seems horrible, not that theres ever a good time...well theres tons of great people and info on here so you've found a wonderful research. glad you're moving forward with your life and have started meds and everything!

How has the medication been for you? What are you taking?Any problems? How are your numbers?

I have a friend (he's more like a son since he has a disability and I have taken him to doctor appointments for years) who found out he was postive at 18. He will be 31 this year. He has had a few relationships but his disability usually is the problem not his status.

I also learned I was positve in 2010, though for me it was April. I take Norvir, Truvada and Prezista at lunch time. Four pills, pretty easy.
