But when it snows in Philadelphia, the snow there will unquestionably be better.

I bet Philadelphia has artisan snow.  :P

It was a nice little snow event for this area . We had about 3 inches and its all but melted already . I took some pics and sent them to Miss P and Henry but I don't know how to post them myself . I know its silly but we get excited because its so rare .

Oddly enough , we have had more snow here in the last 4 years than I ever remember having in the last 20 .

Strange... we had about 9 inches total in the Rockland, Massachusetts last year.  Is it normal for it to rain this much at this time of year here?  It's been raining for like 4 weeks straight with a day of sun scattered here and there.  It really makes driving a challenge seeing how y'all drive so good here. ;)

This rain isn't usual at all and I'm sick of it . We have been in a drought or near one for many summers so I guess its a good thing but I'm seriously ready for some sun . And I see you noticed the rules of the road are only a suggestion in Alabama LOL .

Jg we will be awaiting the snowman pics.

I heard a blurb on the TV this morning that Mississippi also is getting alot of snow, more than Chicago this year.

But here in Gods country its a lovely 70 degrees. I almost put on my basketball shorts and went on the greenbelt today.

Stay warm!

Yes but remember Philadephia has the most beautiful flakes you will ever see, all of which falls within a couple blocks of MissP penthouse,  not like that sticky nasty stuff you are getting.

Yes, my pre-Civil War abode is the red brick one on the right. And no, it's not even in an historic district because old buildings are a dime a dozen in this city. But remember -- it's the official 2013 Hippest Hood in the city!

I have to take the subway in a couple hours to go to the wine shop. I need 1 1/2 cups of white wine to make my Pork Scaloppina Perugina for dinner. On second thought I think I'll go tomorrow -- wine shops here have Sunday hours :)

Well...Philly may be coming out tops in at least one category.  They can do up some sadistic slave torture and welfare fraud like nobody else:

Would it make you feel better knowing that this happened a mere 12 blocks from me three days ago? (http://www.philly.com/philly/news/local/20130122_Pediatrician_found_killed__set_on_fire_in_Center_City.html)

Not only that but a very close friend of mine lives two blocks from there -- it's actually a very safe, upscale area. click this (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Naudain+Street&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89c6c63ed5f40ca3:0x9009bd9259df208f,Naudain+St,+Philadelphia,+PA+19146&gl=us&ei=VZQBUcCuO6LI0wG_1YC4BA&ved=0CDMQ8gEwAA) then click on "street view"

At least the police arrested someone (http://www.philly.com/philly/news/breaking/20130124_Levittown_exterminator_being_charged_today_in_doctors_slaying.html) today. I've been to that coffee house where they caught him on a private surveillance camera. Come to think of it my eye doctor is right around the corner. Weird.

Plus there are so many celebrities from Philadelphia, like Florence Hanford and her Philadelphia Electric kitchen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdUvy4cfE8k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdUvy4cfE8k)

My first partner, who was MUCH older than me (   ::)   ) was from Bethlehem, and always made reference Florence Hanford.

Florence really needed a piping bag to decorate that pie in her video!

And I'm guessing the television station where this was originally taped is just mere blocks from your place, Miss P!

The clip is from some NBC affiliate in Plattsburgh, NY. Our local NBC studios aren't even downtown, they're in Bala Cynwyd on the Main Line. In fact none of the major networks have a studio downtown except for Fox. Kind of odd now that I think about it. SO SORRY TO DISAPPOINT YOU!

You're seriously comparing the Alamo to Independence Hall? Fascinating. Only Texans care about that. Independence Hall is the cradle of American democracy, as well as our great nation's first capitol. You were a neglected backwater of Spain while we were the second largest city in the British Empire.

I won't even bother with Birmingham as it didn't exist during the Civil War -- how pathetic.

The Alamo is much more interesting , it was even in a Pee Wee Herman movie .

I'm at my friends house about a mile from Tanny Hill State Park where you can visit the furnaces used to make cannon balls for the civil war .

Right, and the filthiest in the world. Wasn't it Philly that often was referred to as the 'Diseased City" , rampant Yellow fever because of all the people shitting in the streets and in the drinking water?

Meanwhile about the same time, Texas was a thriving indepedent Sovereign Nation.

Can you believe that today's paltry 1.5" (official reading at PHL) has been our largest snowfall event of the winter, and it's the end of January? El Paso, TX has 8 inches several weeks ago. :-[

But with today's snow we're now tired for last year's miserable 4 inches, so we can't possibly do worse by the end of winter. The 2009-10 season we had 79" and set an all time record. I'd like to blame Southerners for global climate change.

The bad thing there is a cold front bearing down on us ion the next couple of hours. And as my Southern brethren know Cold air over HOT air does not a nice mixture make. They are expecting Tornadoes and such north of us, not too much here though.

Oh Lawdy! It just blew in RIGHT NOW. I was sittin on the porch, free-ballin it in my Daisy dukes and that cold North wind blew right up my groin, rattled the boys and sent a shiver up my spine. Got some dust in my tea also.

SA has a red flag warning so be careful when you eat beans tonight.

Whateva.

It was nicer in Miami today (G_d's Tropical Garden, Party City, and favorite place for all forms of diversity).  No more than 75 at any given moment.

The weather was so beautiful that a couple of friends/colleagues from my department and I just lounged for a few hours on the campus lawn while preparing tomorrow's lessons.  Some Starbucks, pastries, good books, and plenty of gossip.

So enjoy your sucrose loaded concoction.  I'll have me a Guinness.

I know , I'm loosing ma touch  ;) . Vulcan park is a short distance from here and has a civil rights museum there also . I always like to take visitors there to see the museum because it does an excellent job of documenting the abuses that took place during the shameful part of the city's history .

Florida is the real south? I thought it was just that place where Ponce De Leon wrecked his ship on his way to Texas and let loose all those wild pigs and bizarre diseases. I really dont know why we don't just cut Florida loose and let it float down to Cuba. But I guess its a good place for all the Yanks to go to die, otherwise they would end up coming to Texas and fouling us up.

For the same reason that you think where you live has anything to do with the South when, in fact, you're a vestigial hemorrhoid from Pancho Villa's sphincter. That goes for anything south or west of Houston.

I'm so excited! The legendary Dolphin Tavern titty dive bar which has been closed for over a year is reopening next Wednesday. It will now be a legendary titty dive hipster bar, with DJs as well as strippers. I assume this means that the strippers won't be over 40 years old with saggy tits and electrical tape over their nipples, but young ladies with pink, blue and fire engine red hair shimmying up and down poles while patrons imbibe rare microbrews instead of Miller.

r u ready? Mark your calendars, ladies - Filthy's Club Body Center which was tragically gutted in a mysterious fire last year is about to reopen -- new name, new owner! I walked by this afternoon and saw the new signs: http://clubphilly.com/Club_Philly/Countdown.html

If you enjoy being jacked up on meth, hanging from a sling, and being fisted for hours this is your kind of place! And as a bonus there's an HIV testing center around the corner and also our largest HIV clinic a block away. I just hope they did a full scale restoration of The Bear Room. They are actually sprucing the Alamo grounds up! They have kicked all the Pinata and Hotdog vendors off the hallowed area in front of the main door.  ;)

Hey, what's the Executive Health Club For Men at 402 Austin St like? I hear it's "latino heaven"! (http://sanantonio.gaycities.com/bathhouses/) You keepin' secrets from me again? Looks like a dump (http://www.bartalksa.com/Executive.html) but hey, what does one expect in Texas?

I had to look up what Krystal's is -- looks similar to White Castle, though since White Castle was the first fast food place this just ripped them off 80 years ago. They removed all of the White Castles from Filthy 15 years ago so I only get fresh ones when I go back to Brooklyn. I had a White Castle two blocks away from that apartment! Open 24/7 too! And it was full of 110% sketch.

I went to a Captain D's back in the 80's with my grandmother and it seemed just like LJS's -- meaning lame.

Told you this would happen -- remember the derelict topless bar two blocks below me that was being revitalized into a hipster topless bar? It's now #3 in the list of "Best Places" in the city (http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/things_to_do/Phillys-best-places-to-dance-this-Spring-blog.html?image=2), and only after being open a month.

... not that I've gone or anything ::) ???

But if you scroll backwards and look at the #1 place -- The Trestle Inn, you will see that the dumpier the place looks the cooler the crowd is that goes there. This is just how we roll in Filthydelphia. We embrace the filth. However at least at the Trestle once you go inside it's not a dump and they have bison meatloaf sandwiches on the menu.

I bet you don't live near a Hipster Dive Bar (http://philadelphia.foobooz.com/2013/04/16/free-cheesesteak-tacos-at-bob-and-barbaras/?fb_source=pubv1) that serves cheesesteak tacos and has nightly drag shows, now do you? $3 Pabst-and-Jim Beam combo ftw though I prefer an IPA and Jameson shot combo personally.

Also, super large cocks (http://blogs.phillymag.com/gphilly/2013/04/08/bathhouse-gayborhood/) (what in the world is a "slurp ramp"?). And you gotta love how they're putting an in-house STD testing facility on the third floor. So progressive! I LUV PHILLY!

cheesesteak tacos with cheez whiz?
what is up with Philly and their love of canned fake cheese anyway?
I checked it out online to see if it was authentic or just served for the tourists.
From the mouths of your fellow Phillodelfinos, it seems to get a mixed response.

Oh yes, it's either Whiz or real provolone. And if you want it with Whiz you place your order by only saying "whiz wit". I know you'll gag but they're actually better in terms of texture with Whiz. I think the whiz issue came about because the cheesesteak places came about in the 1950's at the same time that whiz first came on the market.

There's a local sandwich that's actually better than a cheesesteak and that's our roast pork, provolone and broccoli rabe. Cheesesteaks are geared to the tourists.

Yes, that was on the Travel Channel's "Man vs. Food" and it competed in a taste test with 20 or so other sandwiches. It was specifically the version sold at DiNic's (http://tommydinics.com/), Reading Terminal Market.

I've eaten it but it's been a while since I did so. The place has huge lines now because of that show so it may be a while before I can sample it again. Reading Terminal Market is now more visited than Independence Hall when you combine it with the locals who also shop there. It's not just ready-to-eat stalls at RTM but also produce stands, fish mongers, butchers etc. But it can become so crowded during tourist season that you don't want to be there. I go more in the winter it seems.

There are tons of other equally good sandwich places. For roast pork ones there's also John's Roast Pork (http://www.johnsroastpork.com/) but since I don't have a car it involves taking the bus, but it's only maybe 15 or so blocks east so doable. It's a dumpy concrete shack with no indoor seating though, but it's also always  on those cooking channel shows. Click on the video in that link and you'll recall that it was also on that same sandwich competition, but for their cheesesteak not for the roast pork.

This is my favorite place for sandwichs in general: http://www.paesanosphillystyle.com/

It's been on both Bourdain's and Bobby Flay's TV shows. I often order the "Gustaio" there which has home-made lamb sausage as the meat, but they also have a good version of the roast pork they call the "Arista" -- click on the menu section. Supposedly the chicken liver sandwich is to die for but I don't care for chicken liver. This place has also become annoyingly crowded. Miss P discovered it years ago before it was on any TV show. I'd go in there and there would be maybe only one or two seats full.

*** BREAKING NEWS *** Philadelphia, one of 11 US municipalities, receives a perfect "100" score from Human Rights Campaign (http://www.queerty.com/boston-nyc-score-high-in-hrc-municipal-equality-index-palm-springs-not-so-much-20121203/) for their Municipal Equality Index, which ranks cities based on laws and policies affecting the local LGBT community.

Rankings were based  on 47  criteria divided into six broad categories: non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition,  employment practices, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement and municipal leadership.

Overall, 137 cities were ranked, including all 50 state capitals and the 50 most populous cities in America, as well as the cities with the highest proportions of same-sex couples.

Out of the 137 municipalities, 11 received a perfect score of 100: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Long Beach, Portland, OR, and Cambridge, MA.

Oddly neither Birmingham nor San Antonio fare quite so well. SAD!

... sailing along (http://blogs.phillymag.com/gphilly/2013/05/09/mayor-nutter-sign-phillys-lgbt-equality-bill-afternoon/)

Philadelphia is one signature away from being the most gay-friendly city in the country. The very first US city to provide this type of sweeping LGBT protection and equality legislation.

I guess actually we would score 110, not 100, on that HRC list, because this was signed last Thursday (http://blogs.phillymag.com/gphilly/2013/05/10/photos-mayor-nutter-signs-philadelphias-lgbt-equality-bill/#more-79511). And folks should note that our City Council passed this by something like 14-3 before the mayor signed it into law, so it was not even contentious.
