I want to see that night. Last night late on PBS they had a 2 hour special on the "best of" from her old cooking shows. I just loved how she lined up about six different kinds of chickens to explain the difference between a fryer, broiler and a roasting chicken. Oh, and don't forget that large capon! That's a castrated rooster for the rest of you.

Watched Harry Potter and District 9.
Put your money on the aliens. Way more disturbing and thought provoking.
I'll give Harry 1.5 popcorns for excessive boring zzz dialogue and not enough relevant actions and 8 popcorns to District 9 for creative scripting and emotive suspense.
Count on a sequel.

'Julie and Julia' looks cute but I know I'll wait until it comes out on DVD to see it. I have never liked the Harry Potter movies. Considering it's all about wizards, witches, bad guys, fantasy and flying things, I've found them all booorring! Although I'll still buy it when it's released on DVD.

Another movie I've been hearing a lot of good reviews about is'500 Days of Summer'....but again, I'll buy it when it's released on DVD.

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly lists all of the movies coming this fall. Some really interesting stuff coming up during the next few months:

* "My" Director Almodovar's 'Abrazos Rotos' (Broken Embraces) will be brought to the US in November
* 'Shutter Island' - Leo DeCaprio and Martin Scorsese together again in what looks like a cool thriller
* 'Amelia' - Hillary Swank will probably get nominated again for an Oscar thanks to this biopic
* 'New York, I Love You' - I loved 'Paris Je T'aime'; this should be just as good
* My beloved Penelope Cruz will star in 'Nine" along with Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard
* The very B-movie-ish 'Jennifer's Body' seems actually interesting
* "The Lovely Bones' seems nice; the book was actually decent.

District 9 was definitely thought-provoking. Instead of asking what will the aliens do to us, it explored what would we do to the aliens? I'd definitely recommend this film.

As an aside, I've read that one man played all the aliens (not sure about the child alien?) and that the shantytown that they lived in was a real shantytown, not a film set. Very sad.

GNYC, indeed that shantytown is [sadly] very real. My wife is from South Africa and I have been quite fortunate to spend time in that beautiful and wonderful country. Those type of slums can be found in big cities like Jo'burg or by the side of the road as you drive through the country. And, you may not know this, but there is an actual "District 6" with an apartheid concept that parallels what was shown in the movie. Sometimes we humans can be quite ugly to one another.

Mimismom: Bear, if you liked "Valkerie", may I suggest you watch "Defiance". It is a wonderful and historically accurate movie about events that I never knew took place. If you rent it, be sure to watch the "extras" as it gives you background information and really good insight into the main charactors.

During our mini vacation, Hubby and I went to see "Transformers II". Not much of a story line, but with graphics like that, who cares! We were hoping to see "GI Joe", but it didn't start until we were in Boston. We'll have to wait for it to come out on rental.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it previously.. but just saw "Moon" last week while traveling in London. Best film I have seen this year so far.. Granted it borrows a lot from 2001 and Solaris, but me being a science fiction nut, it's great to see a film with an original script with enough interesting "high" concepts and good acting instead of all just cartoonish CGI.

I went to see 'District 9' today and I have to say ~ I liked it!It's a very good movie! One of the very few movies where I actually left the theater feeling I had gotten my money's worth!

I saw two films today, the HBO film 'Grey Gardens' with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange ~ very good! They are both excellent in that film. And the other was a film which had been released several years ago, 'House of Sand and Fog' ~ very powerful. I almost cried at the end.

Oh, and I found 'KINSEY', I'll be watching that next weekend....

That is one awesome flick. Connelly, Kingsley, and Aghdashloo make this one happen with their great performances. It is one of my faves from 2003 along with the equally depressive and excellent '21 Grams.' I can [unfortunately] imagine many houses of sand and fog happening out there after the real estate market crashed.

Speaking of HBO films, I just saw one myself that I had never heard of (and it was pretty good). It was called 'Bernard and Doris'; a semi-fictionalised account of the relationship between multi-millionaire Doris Duke (played quite nicely by Susan Sarandon) and her gay butler Bernard Lafferty (portrayed pretty flawlessly by Ralph Fiennes). They'll probably be playing this one a few more times for the next couple of weeks.

Major recommendation: 'Sometimes in April'. A beautiful and powerful (although a bit too graphic) account of the Rwandan genocide also produced by HBO.
