Title: Facebook
Post by: GSOgymrat on July 26, 2009, 10:55:41 pm
I have gotten several invites from friends and relatives asking me to look at their Facebook page. Unfortunately in order to look at their page I apparently have to open an account. For reasons I don't completely understand I have some kind of aversion to the whole social networking thing but I'm considering checking it out. Any of you social butterflies out there have any advice as far as do's and don'ts when using Facebook?

If you're weird about stuff facebook has settings where you can make your profile "private" i.e. only viewable to people you approve as friends.  Just make sure to change whatever the default settings are.

GSO, you can set your settings so that no one can see your profile unless you accept them as friend (that includes pictures and personal data).  Once you accept someone you can always remove them if it turns out to be someone to whom you no longer want to be connected.

It is actually a cool place to stay in touch with family and old friends/acquaintances, but it can also be a bit annoying when it comes to a lot of little "invites" (karma, drinks, games, etc.).   You make it your own as far as content (and it is way above that booty-call site known as their space).

yeah,

they are great. you can make your profile private or public. there may also be in between settings, like only parts of your profile can be public or only people who know your email or last name can add you as a friend. also, on myspace you have the power to preview comments and postings before people put them on your page. i know this is how it is set up on myspace, not sure about facebook.

it truly is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. there are some awkward situations (someone you don't like requesting access, x's popping up or coworkers) but those are few and far between. usually they can be dealt with via email or simply ignoring, its up to you. overall, i would recommend setting up a page for whatever your needs are. if needed, you can also use an alias and have it connected to auxiliary email so only people in your network and the people you request can find your profile based on given information (name, stats, email, etc..).

hope this works out for the best,

con caridad,
d

You can set you profile to searchable if you want people to be able to find you .

After moving back to Birmingham in October I have been able to reconnect with friends that I haven't seen in 20 years ... its been great for me .

ford...

you're pretty sharp so when you figure out how it works, let me know.  My problem is posting. There is something about a 'wall' and 'likes' and 'comments' and 'sharing' I don't know when what I post is private or public.  Sometimes when I 'share' something I'm asked to verify my account by entering a confirmation code  that had been texted to my phone.  The deal is, nothing has ever been texted to me and I don't have that kind of phone so I don't know what they're talking about.

Now it's great when friends (like Jan and Cliff) post pictures.  I get to look at them and I get to know what they're doing when they're away from here.  But sometimes I don't really care.  LIke my friend Meg.  For some reason now I'm friends with her daughter Amanda and she's always posting to her friends or she wishing her Aunt a happy birthday and the messages show up on my page. eh? I'm not sure what that's all about.

Jan and Cliff seem to have the hang of it.  Maybe they can give us a tutoral.

To answer your question, I don't think you have much to lose.

Hi Ford,

I have a Facebook account, it's fairly new with my good friend, his ex and his best friend and my cousin as my "friends" list.  I am very shy on Facebook which is odd for me as I have been here on these forums since October 2005 and not a day goes by that I don't say something but figure, I now have 5 Facebook friends.  I keep my account pretty closed from public except, I will share photo albums with "friends" and their friends but I think there is only 1 person who actually looks at them.

In a real life, face to face social situation, I can work a room, it is what I've always done, it was my job.  I do the PR work for my BF's firm now because I have fun and am good at it.  Now, he on the other hand is shy socially but has hundreds of Facebook friends, many of them from far away places and decades ago, but they keep in touch.   ;D  Have the best day
Michael

Maybe they can give us a tutoral.

I was a holdout forever before I finally broke down and set up an account there.  I'm no stranger to social networking sites as I've been on many of them over the years.  I started to see how fanatical people were over FB, so my curiosity got the best of me.

The key here is setting up LISTS....

I only have less than 25 friends there, but the lot of them are people I actually KNOW, unlike other networks where people often times are familiar in the cyber world.

Basically I set up varying degrees of access. Some people have "total" access, meaning they can see (almost) everything I do on FB, the next group "basic" access, and other have even more limited access - depending on the degrees of closeness.  I also have blocks in searches where people can't search for me.

Here are a few links to study, as it's not really difficult to establish these things:

http://www.allfacebook.com/2009/02/facebook-privacy/

http://www.sophos.com/security/best-practice/facebook.html

Hope these help

Off to access FB from my iPhone :)

Just don't post any pics or write anything that you don't want your family members to read or see, and you'll be ok, also the private setting is a must on facebook, my family isn't close to me, and most all of them live in another State, so, it's a great place to get together at and chat, post, and write about what's on your mind  ;D

I also started using Facebook at the urging of a lot of our friends from camp.  I also didn't feel comfortable using my 'real' name.  In other words, us a 'pseudonym' instead of your real name.

I hear a lot of people at work talking about some drama over facebook and myspace all the time. Usually involves a boyfriend or husband getting messages telling him that the female enjoyed their shared time the night before and for some reason the wife or girlfriend has an issue with it.

I still don't get it....  I admit I tried it, but getting into a lengthy conversation about how I did my page bores me just like the comments of "hey dude holla at a brother", well fuck why not just call me?  Actually have a friend on there names Johnny D who uses some of the stories from my child hood as his own....lol weird!

I'll just stick to my contact list on the phone.......  hearing another voice for some reason strikes me as a novel idea.

I tried to continue working for a long time after I couldn't and found myself in one of those "state of the art" outbound call centers where the computer would auto dial, tech support was recording and listening and there was 200 phone cubicles with computer screens where we would find the company terms used in several different conversations.  The machine dialed out at least 100 cold calls per 8 hour shift for minimum wage for montgomery ward dental plans or auto clubs.

One day on 50's day... A manager was bouncing herself up and down the aisles (wearing a pink poodle skirt) cheering, "1 more sale, 1 more sale, Christy has the balloons!"  I walked off the job and went home without having any idea how I was going to pay the rent.  That was about 13 years ago and I still have a phobia about phones  ;D  Have the best day

This may have been mentioned but you can also remove yourself from Facebook and Google's search results on the "search privacy settings" page.  I thought I did this but somehow gradeschool friends and old tricks still keep tracking me down... :-\

I don't even wish  to remember my old classmates, they were all ASS-HOLES and about 90% of them really hated GAYS, and that was way back in 1973-74 when I was in High-school...it was awful, I dropped  outta high school, but, later got my G.E.D in 1975-76.......later, went on to Jr. Collage where it wasn't so bad, and I found out that people weren't all ASS-HOLES, I even made a lotta friends there, life was good and fun to live   ;D

Ford,

I have been getting a load of invites from people on this site, and I simply delete the e-mails.  It isn't as though I don't like these people or anything like that, but this year has been a really good year for me health wise, and my partner retired for the second time.  I have just been far too busy to spend any amount of time on the computer, and I certainly don't want to start doing so on a social site, other than this one.

I simply don't understand the "friend" thing, and the accumulation of same.  As I understood the meaning of friend; someone you can call at 3am and they won't either hang up, or sound uninterested, these social networking sites are nothing more to me than a bunch of digital noise.  I don't mean to sound aloof, but if I am going to call anyone a friend, it will be well after we have met, bonded, and really gotten to know each other.  I guess I just don't fit into this modern age, and really have no interest in doing so.  I just don't have the time.

We use Facebook to keep up with friends...  mostly ones we know from (gay) camping.  It would be difficult for me to call 'em up and chat while at work, but I can easily post a Facebook comment.  For me, it's not like talking on the phone to a friend.  It's like being in a group setting (I guess that's where the 'social' part come from 'social networking site') - maybe like 5 to 20 friends - and socializing.  Instead of emailing a bunch of pics to a bunch of people, we can post them for group of 'friends'... and they do the same.  It's actually pretty cool how it works.

If you have issues  of being in the closet about   ANYTHING , be careful .

All people have to do is Google my name and they get my whole gay/AIDS/lipo story complete with link to pictures of my naked ass. I'm sure there are people who have thought "whatever happened to Ford?", Googled and got more than they bargained for. I know my dad did.

I think part of the problem for me is what Moffie was talking about. I kind of dread getting friend invites from people who I don't want to communicate with, like people from high school. I know if I get an invite and don't respond I'll feel guilty that I'm ignoring someone who has made an effort to contact me. That is why I don't want people to be able to search for me.

This is a great explanation of Facebook: "For those who don't know what it is, Facebook is a massive multiplayer role playing game in which the objective is to collect 'friends'." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFKHaFJzUb4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFKHaFJzUb4)

I'm using it occasionally, with my real name, and with my fake last name.
I've set privacy to HIGH after receiving some disturbing personal messages from anonymous/fake users saying things like: ''I know you are dying from AIDS. I'm gonna tell everyone';' ???

So, I cannot receive personal messages from people  who aren't on my list of friends...and people who aren't my friends cannot see my info, my list of friends, nor my photos.  :)

I'm not openly gay, but that does not mean I cannot comment on photos of cute guys
posted on facebook by my openlygay friends. And I don't give a damn what some orthodox catholic girls from my highschool days think about that (yes they sent me a friend request, and I don't like to say NO ;D ).

The other thing you will want to be savvy about is your use of apps ... those little quizzes and things that your contacts will no doubt encourage you to use over time. Some of them are not very privacy friendly. Also, if not yet mentioned, Facebook periodically semi-reinvents itself so you will want to visit your privacy settings once in a while to ensure everything is set as you would wish ... they don't always tell you who has access to what, especially after updates and changes to infrastructure that introduces new default settings.

Overall, it a great way to stay connected to people you know.

I twittered for a while, but I'm not huge on it.  It's basically a low brow facebook.

However, I now need a fancy smart phone to really use this stuff.  I'm kind of wanting to be anti-iPhone (even though I'm majorly pro-Apple and have been for over a decade) and buy a Palm Pre.  I was actually one of the very first Treo 180 customers, and in fact I was on a waiting list to buy it before it even came out.  Back then it was like the first to have SMS texting, but I had nobody to text to because nobody else could do it.  So I only sent texts to my two friends who also had Treo 180's.

Plus I'm already a Sprint customer, and the cheapest data plan for the Pre is cheaper than the iPhone's, plus At&T sucks ass and drops calls all the time.  Sprint rarely if ever does.  People always complain about AT&T's customer service too, but Sprint has never been a problem with me.

I should wait for "revision 2" though before I get it.

No, my cats had the names "cock" and "cunt" in Spanish.  Pito and Chucha.  We'd get really nasty looks from the Puerto Rican girls that worked the reception desk at the local vets office.  Either that or a lot of giggling.

Poor Pito passed away from intestinal cancer the year before I moved to Philadelphia, and it was horribly traumatic and I refuse to get another pet, so now I raise specialty hybrid hibiscus plants, though currently I'm battling a bad case of white flies.  I think one plant is on the way to dying a long, slow death.

Chucha is still alive and living in Brooklyn, but she has a bad hernia or something and some other issue where she has to take an oral steroid every day or she won't eat.  I doubt she'll last through the end of the year, but then she's almost 15 years old and I guess that's about as long as a cat lives, right?  I still see her whenever I go back up to Brooklyn.

Being technically savvy is my job.  I figured out a long time ago that there isn't much I can't find out if I want to.   That includes information about me.   So, I decided to control it rather than avoid it.  Anyway, it's basically an uncomfortable fact that life isn't as private as we'd like to think.  I personally have chosen to go with it.

Technology isn't something to be feared.    Like it or not, use of technology has moved beyond an esoteric interest into a fundamental life skill.  Facebook is just one more way to keep in touch with the important people in your life.   There are lots of controls that help you make information more private.   I started using it to send pics to my mom and was frankly floored with the number of people I found from my many past lives.   I recommend it.

I do have a facebook profile but, to be honest, i find facebook to be inane.

I have this other thing called email, my mobile and an antique thing called a telephone. Last but not least, every so often I resort to the ancient art of letter writing to stay in touch with friends - i think it makes a nice surprise to receive a hand written letter in the mail once every so often.

I do have a facebook profile but, to be honest, i find facebook to be inane.

Same here, right beside text messaging.  My seventeen year old daughter has this habit of sending me lengthy texts which require legthy replies.  By the time I text the third word in my draft I am so frustrated that I just give up and resort to a  simple y or n.  Yes or no for those of you who are not aware of the short hand way of texting.  Of course I sometimes resort to just immediately calling her as soon as I get the text from her and..... well....  wouldn't you know it she can't answer, although I will get an immediate text while I am leaving her a voice mail telling me why she didn't answer her phone.

It's a fricking paradox derived from all this technology......   I say we ban it all.  Myspace, facebook, e-mail, cell phones, and microwaves.  Why microwaves?  Does anyone remember how a Big Mac taste in the early seventies?  That's a good enough reason in my book.

I don't have a cell phone, but only because on my income, I'd rather have the internet.  When I was in school, I really did need it (internet).

Everything today does make staying in touch more impersonal.  And more and more things are going tech.  Like applications.  Most companies around here require that apps be done online.  And even the welfare system here is going online.  What about people who don't have computers, and people who don't know how to navigate on a computer?  The whole thing's insane.

I would, however, like to keep the microwave, Skeebo, so I can make my daily t.v. microwaveable dinners. ;)

I have a cell phone, but, it's the only phone I have, and, it's very basic, I only use it to talk on the phone, to conduct business, I don't take any pics, and NEVER text ANYONE, pictures cost 20 cents per send and texting cost 30 cents per line..........I wouldn't be able to afford the cell phone, it adds up VERY FAST,  if I did any of them, it cost me 39.99 + Tax  just to have to phone, and to do nothing ???
and getting a iphone, is way outta my budget, no way in HELL, I'd be able to afford that......

I do have a cell phone, and I have a myspace page (but find if extremely silly).   I thought it would be "fun" to connect with people I went to high school with, etc.   But when you 'connect' with them and say HI what more is there to say?   I have one who now leaves daily Bible verses on my wall....

I think the technology is great, but am afraid we have created a generation of social misfits.   My niece and her boyfriend cannot be in the same room with us, and carry on a conversation, without using some type of DEVICE, be it laptop, netbook, iphone, ipod, whatever....This disturbs me.   I suppose when they get married they will stand at the altar and text "I do" to each other....

Exactly!  I remember people saying the same thing about cell phones and email back in the day.

Using Facebook to get in touch with classmates from years back?  Who'd want to?  How about staying in touch with current friends and family.  Impersonal?  I find NOT staying in touch at all much more impersonal.  Anything that makes keeping up with my friends easier and more enjoyable is good.

My talking on my cell phone at work is pretty obvious; my texting somebody isn't.  If somebody texts me, I get it when I have the chance without having to check voice mail.  When I had a phone with a standard numeric keyboard where multiple presses of a key give the desired letter, I hated texting.  My current phone (iPhone) has a keyboard laid out like a computer's keyboard, and texting is MUCH easier.

All this sounds like people's opinions on sex.  Some don't like it at all (sex or alternate forms of communication) or think there's something wrong with those who do.  Some are whores (with phones / pc's and sex).  Some like text due to its instant nature.   Others enjoy Facebook for sharing pictures, funny comments, and messages (like in a social setting).  Still others like email for the opportunity to take time to compose a message and maintain a record of messages.

The problem with people that criticize technological changes is that unless you attempt to use the new application (and by that I mean for an extended period) and become familiar with how to use and in what situations, you can't really effectively assess its greater or lesser efficiency.

For example, with texting you could compose several messages while riding the subway for your daily commute where you couldn't make a call and/or leave messages.  As soon as you exit the station and the data connection is reestablished the texts immediately are sent.  Also texting alleviates the more cumbersome use of retrieving endless messages from voice mail where you have to sit there and listen to someone drone on and on.

Of course, any form of communication can be overused.  Personally I find forwarded emails with stupid stories and parables from my parents more annoying than a text message from a 20 year old acquaintance.

I'm always just reminded of all the poo pooing about ATM machines in the early 80's and that the internet would never amount to anything in the early 90's , etc.

Exactly.   I might add that greater efficiency is not always the idea.  Sometimes it's just fun, better contact, more variety, better access, etc.   I spend most of my work life attempting to change people's outlook towards and use of technology in their jobs.   It is a constant battle managing resistance to change just simply because it is technology.

Anyway, it's just a tool.  If a person has no use for it, then great.  But it's not the tool that's the issue.

True, but i just find facebook and all its apps and thingies inane - and I've given it a fair go and still maintain a profile. Maybe I haven't 'got it' yet or as I suspect, at least in my circumstances, it isn't of any great value in keeping in touch with friends - i see them all regularly anyway or stay in touch via the phone, email and yes, texting. I can't or shouldn't (hehehe) use facebook at work and i try to stay away from my computer at home, especially during the week - i figure staring at a screen for 8 hours a day is enough.

On a slightly tangental point, and an interesting cultural matter, from what I understand texting is (or maybe, was) not as popular in the US as in many other countries. Some of this is/was explained by interconnectivity issues and cost and various other things, like higher use of blackberries.

I just checked my last few mobile bills and it would appear that I send about 150-200 texts a month - and I wouldn't be considered a high user. Texting people on the same network is free and doesn't count toward my monthly spend - so it's convenient, and generally free.

I agree that the facebooks apps are tired, and I don't really use them.  But I've also not really fished around with them too much yet.  For me FB is good, because as we all know I moved away from 15 years worth of friends fairly recently, and while it's only a rather short jaunt up to NYC from here I don't end up going as much as I could, so in that respect it allows me to keep up.  Plus I have my closest circle of people on a separate "wall" list so when I want I can just view what's going on with them and not mess with all of the Brazilian men that I've friended.  I also have a handful of high school people I keep up with, shocking I know.  Actually it's really just 3 people.

I made the mistake of letting it slip to my mother that I was on facebook, so I'm sure she told my nieces and they'll want me to tell them how to find me, but that one isn't going to happen.    It's all well and good for my family to know that I'm gay, but they really don't need to see how much this girl carries.  Plus they'd have to have smegma jokes explained to them.

Who the F' said I don't pick up the phone when I'm not at work.  I do work 1/3 of the hours a day, sleep another 6-7, and am busy the rest.

Some of the shit really is that important.  Some of it's humorous.  Some of it's just fun.  Mostly, though, it's MY pc and MY cell phone and MY friends... what's wrong with how I choose to stay in touch with them?

So I have been on Facebook for several weeks now and I admit it is kind of fun. I decided to accept friend requests from basically anyone I know and ended up mostly with people from high school and coworkers. There are a couple of real friends and family members too.

High school was undoubtedly the worst time in my life and I didn't keep up with any of my classmates or attend any reunions. Our 25th reunion was this weekend and although I didn't go it was interesting seeing people's posted photos and reading their profiles. It reminds me why my classmates wrote "bleeding heart liberal" all over my yearbook as most everyone seems to describe themselves as "right wing", "Republican" and "conservative Christian." There is one guy though who used to sit behind me and punch his nose until he bled and then write stuff on his desk in blood. He is now living in L.A., covered in tattoos and a militant atheist. Of course it is always fun to see how people have changed physically-- some people have not changed at all and some people are unrecognizable.

I'm definitely something of a voyeur on Facebook. I like hearing about other people but never think of things worth sharing. I don't understand the people who like to share "I'm eating at Wendy's". I'm not going to be a Facebook addict but I think I will check it a couple of times a week.

I find it so interesting to read about Facebook but not interesting enough to get one.  Unfortunately, I am of the dinosaur age and do not have a cell phone ~ so I don't text (don't know how anyway).  I do have an answering machine though, I think that's good enough.  I don't' have a Facebook either for I don't know too many people to start one up anyway.  And, YES, I still continue to use the phone book to look for phone numbers!  ::)

Maybe someday I'll "catch up with today's technology" but for now, eh, I'm fine the way things are.  :)

at the urging of my niece and sister i created a facebook account last year.  1 friend I lost contact with (and was interested in being in touch with again) actually found me and it was fun for a while.  facebook is like myspace for the middle-aged (but now counts all ages among participants).   like someone else mentioned be selective about the "applications" you give access to -- every time you take a quiz or send a virtual gift (and the point is???) or virtually sneeze you have to explicitly allow the application access to your profile.  one reason for providing access is so your fb friends who have taken the same quiz or use the birthday calendar or wtf can see your quiz score, your birthday, your movie picks/misses, etc.

then a friend in new zealand forced me to start playing a game called mafia wars.  although i've uniformly hated almost every video or online game since pacman i became addicted.  one needs to have as many people as possible in one's mafia so i did friend-whoring for mw members.  almost to a person each of those people is in a "friends list" titled mafia wars and everyone in the mw list can see the minimum amount of info possible.   then i was invited by my friend phil in philly to join GFF, the mafia wars gay family and friends group.  after some friend-whoring i created a new friends list for GFF folks i'd taken a liking to or vice versa (usually versa...) so i can see their wall posts, updates, notes, etc. blah, blah, blah.  distinguishing between the differences is sometimes iffy and phil has chided me many times for never seeing posts or comments past the first display page but even when i look i rarely see his snide comments unless we're online at the same time.

about a month ago i got sick of mafia wars and began sending loot to friends before dumping the stupid game altogether.  then i deleted all my fb friends thinking i was deleting only mafia wars friends and so far can't be bothered to make friend requests so went from over 600 friends to 2.   phil told me he couldn't even see my profile with the direct link:

http://www.facebook.com/anhedonia (http://www.facebook.com/anhedonia)

but we hadn't re-friended each other yet.  i told him i prefer chatting on the phone anyway.  one of the few activities i like on facebook is scrabble but i had to make another profile so i could, as it were, play with myself.  whenever i've tried to find someone online to play scrabble no one is there...   for some reason i can play scrabble using windows 7 with firefox and safari but not using vista which is what's on my "real" laptop.  so it's back to shisen sho.

facebook offers a plethora of time-wasting crap like yoville and farmville and this&thatville and my personal fave, mafia wars (not to be confused with mob wars... whatever the fuck that is) and for each of them, guess what??  you can accumulate points or acres or cubic feet of manure or whatever by playing the game -- and if you're nearly dead and semi-conscious that suffices.  most poor fools (i.e., me) pay for some points in order to advance to a semi-desirable level.  then there are the "free" plans like gevalia coffee, buying homes for 12 cents & selling them for millions, using green tea to cure every possible ailment, more diet plans than you can shake a deep fried pork-chop at, and assorted other rip-offs that conveniently continue to bill you after you've cancelled the service... does anyone need teeth-whitening crap?  i have 4 or 5 unopened tubes of the junk.

i don't know about salvatore but once one finds one of the hunky homo links the world is his/her oyster.  i've seen profiles/pics of guys living in iran, pakistan, fukuistan, saudi arabia and tons of countries we in the usofa are taught to lump into the "evildoers" category so the concept of being openly gay is absurd.  impossible!!

oh, wait, i forgot.  is you're sufficiently wealthy many of those taboos can be ignored.

for a short, rather shallow period i was stud-hunting so made mafia wars friend requests based on the humpability of the recipient.  i've never claimed to have any depth.

I don't do face book, my space or any other on-line interwebs net social linky thing.  Unless you count these forums  ;D

I found out my 20th high school reunion is next month from there, I still can't decide if I want to go or not?
I don't understand all the applications and usually miss half the stuff that is posted, but it can be interesting at times.

Facebook has its pluses and minuses. Just like AIDSMEDS.
I find it comforting on facebook to see slip shot superficial, but no less true, info coming from friends and relatives I've know throughout my life and different locations.  An auntie here, a college buddy there, a childhood friend, an ex-colleague, etc.
Puts my current circle of relationships into handy perspective.

You can't expect the technology of a tool like Facebook to permit all that you want it to, just like you can't expect all those people who are your "friends" to communicate in ways, in life or on socialnetwork technology - that you define as "friendship".

Neither AIDSMEDS nor Facebook have a chat room, for example.  Remember that - live synchronous chat?

I enjoyed what happens on live chat.  Seems to be falling away these days as a preferred networking tool. People want piecemeal and at their own schedule.

Also, Facebook's interface does NOT permit long posts.  So, its bound to be superficial.

Um, so you're calling a lot of us here social misfits without having met us face to face?  It's so easy to call people names when you've not met them.  Think about it; 99% of the people I interact with on Facebook are people I've met; how many of us on AidsMeds can say that we've met the majority of folks that we deal with here?

Believe me, I know a "whole wide wonderful world" exists; I'm out in it every day.  As for spending all my time in front of a PC.... well, that's my job 8 hours per day.  I can pop in here off and on throwout the day.  I can do the same with Facebook.  Like a television, cell phone, internet, or other piece of technology, Facebook requires the user to actively participate for it to mean anything.

What is Facebook to us?  It's a way to keep up with real friends that we are only able to see once a month at most or once a year.  It's how we keep up with friends totally around the world from us - in New Zealand - or across the country.  I laugh at a lot of pictures and text that people post.  We plan social events like parties and get-togethers.  We share videos, pictures, and memories of past events (parties and gatherings).  Facebook is just like these forums (or any other tool); it's what you make it to be.

Well, whatever......I still think FB is very annoying I haven't been to it in well over 4 months now, hey I'm old school, I'm 53, it's nice to contact family members that don't live in the same State as I do, but other then that, I have no interest in using it for any thing else, I'd rather meet people in person it's less "superficial"  ;)

Now I'm just upset because David NC and Ford haven't sent me "friends" requests..... :'(

I need you handsome guys to 'friend' me, so I can 'impress' everyone with my friends list...LOL   ;D  This still seems a tad silly to me, but I am participating a bit more...still can't think of anything to write, that I would deem worthy of spending the time on.   Plus, I do confess, I am kind of ignorant about it, and not sure who can see what....so that kind of messes with me....

I get a few friend requests from people that I have NO IDEA who they are....I guess it's because we have mutual friends....??

I did post a few pics of me and the partner at the County Fair, the one where I cracked a rib on one of the rides....I decided I am way too old and too bony to be riding old rickety carnival rides....

Don't worry honey -- they shun me too.

ps: go into your "settings" section, then the "privacy" section.  Under the "Profile" section set everything to say "only friends" -- do this with both the "basic" and "contact information" tabs at the top, and always be sure after changing these settings to hit "save changes".

Also, under "Privacy > Search" section you can make it so when people do a search for your name all they can see is your profile picture, and simple links to request you as a friend and send a message.  If you don't wish for others to be able to see who is on your friends list this is where you change that.  Also, if you don't want people from college and high school contacting you then this section is where you can deselect those options.

...
I hand write letters.  If I want to 'chat' I visit my friends or have them visit me.
...

letters?  like A, B, C, et cetera?  i can't write legibly any more so use PC and printer or email to communicate via the written word.

i hate chat and IM because i can't type quickly AND accurately but anal-retentiveness simply forces me to correct typos before pressing the enter key.  i only began cell phone texting last year after getting a new phone with full keyboard.  using number keys is far too much a pain in the derriere.

North Carolina men are such snobs!

Seriously I have yet to invite anyone to be friends yet. I guess I'm a cyber wallflower. I'll have to search for you guys.

Now Alan, I let people send ME friend requests; I like the attention!  :D  Seriously, PM me your Facebook name.

Don't worry honey -- they shun me too.

Same to you; send me your FB name.  NC men can be snobs, but it's just a front; we're actually really nice guys... and hot, too! ;D
