Hubby and I took the kids to the Pittsburgh Zoo today. On the way, we stopped over at IHOP in Morgantown for breakfast. Now, granted, the 8 of us make quite an entrance, but we were seated with relative ease and already knew what everyone wanted to eat and drink. (score 1pt for mum for the forethought and planning) Anyway, we were seated next to the bathrooms. This is a very coveted table in my opion, for anyone with kids. It saves me from having to get up 100 times during a meal to shuffle kids back and forth from the potty. We were literally 3 feet away, so I could send them in by themselves or, at least 2 by 2. It worked for Noah, right?

We made it to the bottom of our Who-ville pancake stackers topped with pink and blue goo-like stuff and multi-colored chocolate drops with a pink sucker stuck on the top. All 6 kids were sporting their new pink / blue / speckled looks and I was eating my toast and enjoying my chocolate milk. Life was going good. Then, a man comes out of the bathroom and stands over Hubby, whose back was to our new mystery guest. Unfortunately, we are very used to being on the receiving end of stupid comments and questions. A very nasty comeback was on the tip of my tongue when the guy tucked money under the edge of Hubby's plate and left.

I looked acrossed the table, Hubby took a sip of coffee. I raised my eyebrow, Hubby took another sip of coffee. I put my elbows on the table and leaned acrossed the table, Hubby met my eyes and smiled. I reached over and grabbed the money, Hubby grabbed my wrist. I picked up my fork, Hubby let go of my hand. I put on my mean mommy face, and Hubby spilled the beans.

The man had asked Hubby if we were foster parents. Hubby told him not technically because, although we fostered our kids prior to their adoptions, we knew that we'd eventually be able to adopt them. The man had been raised in a foster home. His foster parents had since passed and he wanted to pass on the blessing that they had given him, a thank you to them so to speak, so he bought our family breakfast. It was a nice suprise and a wonderful blessing. I hope his foster parents saw what he did - and told him, "your welcome".

We went on to have a wonderful day at the zoo.

Mum,
This coming on the heels of the almost evil in people ripping folks off with phone scams was a real treat! The best part, to me, is that the guy did it because he wanted to. No tax deduction. No name on a plaque. No public thanks. It was a genuine appreciation for foster parents and what you guys do!

It's people like you, hubby and that kind stranger that makes this world a better place.. there are still some wonderful people out there, stories like that restores my faith in the human race...thanks for sharing that with us.

Wish I had been with you guys.....I love zoos, and I love IHOP.

I have to ask Mini which is her favorite animal? Mine has always been the giraffe.

Now what is it with women folk brandishing kitchen utensils on the men folk as of late.
Not long ago i was told" don't make me get the beater"

I did not ask what the use of the beater was going to be, nor did i push my luck to find out

Little Steve, there were no tassie devils or wambats

. But, they did get to chase around a kangaroo in the petty zoo. It was pretty funny, too. Here's these sweet little kangaroos lounging under trees without a care in the world...when suddenly...KABOOM! All matter of chaos insues when 6 charging tin heads charge through the gates. They ran one way, the poor kangaroo would hop the other way..they'd chase it...it would try to duck for cover. Once it even tried to hide under a tree with one of it's mates, but the other kangaroo just shoved him back into the mix. The savage horde got the poor thing cornered, gave him a few gentle pats on the head, turned around, and calmly left - totally satisfied that they got to touch a kangaroo. They also got to hug a llama and got #6 kissed a camel.

AND, we got to see a 4-D ultrasound of a baby elephant in utero. It was really cool - fully formed and just floating around sucking it's trunk! The zoo keeper said that baby elephants suck their trunk just like human babies (including our #5) suck their thumbs. All in all, it was a wonderful day.

aw mum....

It's the simple things like a plate of pancakes that gives us cherished memories.

There is something about IHOP. One afternoon, out of the blue, my father was in the mood for pancakes. He asked me out to lunch. We drove over to IHOP and he had a huge plate pancakes.

That was the first and only time I've ever been to IHOP. It was one of the last times the 2 of us were alone together.
