HIV: Average Age at Death 45.3 Years
« on: March 11, 2007, 03:03:03 pm »
So the local paper had a section talking about the risk in our every day lives.  IE Risk of being a victim of violent crime, being in a plane crash, dying of various causes.  The chance of dying from HIV was 1 in 451.

What shocked me was the average at death from HIV was 45.3 years old!

The stats didn't give the source of the stats, and I guess if these go back to the beginning of the epidemic that might explain the low figure.  But at 42.3 years myself, I found this pretty sobering :(

Newspapers and statistics - not the best combination. I read an interesting Danish study that shows that a 25 yo man, diagnosed in 2006 (in Denmark) could expect to live almost 40 years, providing they don't get Hepatits C. That's still worse than diabetes, but a shed load better than 10 years ago.

How is this 42.3 years supposed to read? Doesn't it rather depend on how old you are when you get infected?! I could understand it if it was the average age of death of people with HIV, averaged over the whole of the epidemic, like you suggested.

Anyway, I choose to put my faith in the Danish study - it was pretty good. And it's based on therapy now, not in 10 years' time, when it will be soooo much better.

Thanks for posting these. Very interesting, although slightly overwhelming!

But as far as I can see, none of this data links death rates to date of diagnosis, which might give some idea of life expectancy. For example, table one just shows new diagnoses in each age group over a number of years.

Even the tables in section 4, that show survival categories after an AIDS diagnosis give no information as to when that person was infected, and how long they lived with HIV before developing AIDS.

Oh, gosh! I'll be 44 this November! I'd better start getting in deep debt borrowing money from banks and never pay because I'll die and won't give a crap if my credit is damaged after that! I'll eat and travel in luxury from now on. While I do this I'll start having affairs based on sex only and become very unfaithful to my partner and enjoy each _uck because I'm going to be _ucked anyways! I'll stop taking my meds and get that holiday from meds that I've always desired but with a vl of 345 by the time I reach 45.3 it may reach only to 1000 but I'm dying anyways, right? Wow, there are so many naughty and pleasurable things I wanna do that I have too many in my mind to write down!  :o

PS(The past message is all joking! ;D I don't believe in any statistics  because they are just like those movie critics. Sometimes they say a movie is terrible, but when we see it, we love it!)  I don't expect to die from hiv related complications at least until I'm over 50. Yea, right. I said that 21 years ago so I still got about 7 years to go... ;)

Another example of a meaningless statisic. All this says is that if you consider those people who have died from HIV complications, their average age at death was 45.3 years. It doesn't mean that the average person with HIV will live to be only 45.3 years.

Think of it this way. Say the average age at death of people in fatal car accidents is 45.3. This statistic says nothing about the chances of someone dying in a car accident.

Statistics:
More than half a million people diagnosed with AIDS have died in the USA. Some 69% of these people did not live to the age of 45.

In 2005, the age group 35-44 years accounted for an estimated 33% of HIV diagnoses, 39% of AIDS diagnoses, and 41% of deaths of people diagnosed with AIDS. The estimated number of children (under 13) diagnosed with AIDS in 2005 was 58.

When interpreting HIV and AIDS statistics, it is important to remember that a person infected with HIV will probably not develop AIDS for several years - the average delay in the USA is around ten years without treatment, and longer if antiretroviral drugs are taken. Also, new diagnoses of HIV do not necessarily represent new infections, because people may live with the virus for a number of years before being tested.

Here we go again with the statistics.

I was told 15 years then 20 years then 22.5 years then 35-40 years then Normal lifespan, now I have 20 years left? I guess I should plan retirement now at the age of 26.
Don't believe everything you read ladies  believe what the majority of people who are currently living with HIV and what the majority of doctors are telling you. Doctors read lots and lots of research articles and tend to make an estimate on the most reliable sources of information. If my doc said normal lifespan minus 6 months or a year, I shall try and focus on that statistic. My first doctor refused to answer my , how long do I have to live question, because she doesn't know. For all we know we can dies in 10 years after infection or 35 years after infection. I am actually glad there is no specific number, I guess I will be surprised.

To be fair, no matter what flavor they start out with, dont they ALL end up?

Nevermind. I sorta grossed myself out here :)

It's got a lot of those:
1 in 255 chance of a Canadian dying from poisoning.
1 in 11,903 from dying in a landslide or avalanche.
1 in 75,388 of dying from a bee, wasp or hornet sting.
1 in 4 chance of a structurally damaging earthquake hitting my city in the next 50 years :o

I should have clarified, my point wasn't so mcuh to say we're all gonna die at 45.3 years,  but to point out how many who have gone before us died to young.  The other major diseases had much higher avg age at death: lung cancer (70.2), breast cancer (68.6) etc.

Well such a figure is at first sight a downbringer.

But the other side of the story is this:

1 In the Netherlands there a a few number of new borns with hiv. Doctors expect these kids (with treatment) to grow up and start families of their own.
2 In the Netherlands of all hiv positives 0,4% - 0,6% die each year of hiv/aids related illnesses. Part of these deaths are people who are resistant to alle available meds and the so called 'too late discoveries'.
3 Last year no one in Niedersachsen died of hiv/aids related illnesses.

We have now for 10 years HAART. So we don't know what will happen in the long run. Still people do die of hiv/aids.
But i have hope and perhaps i should regard this disease as an extra risk factor in live like driving 50.000 miles a year in my car without seat belts (perhaps that's a view that gives me some comfort).

See, that's where statistics may give an 'over all' view of HIV & AIDS, but have little, if anything, to do with an individual.  I haven't been HIV+ for more than 4 years, was diagnosed HIV+ a year ago, and diagnosed with AIDS within 8 months of that (not on any meds during that time).  My numbers were fairly good, so 'statistically', I shouldn't have had any OI's.  Statistically, I shouldn't even be HIV+, based on the demographic statistics in our area (based on age, race, drug use, education, employment), but here I am!

To me, statistics like those dealing with HIV show an 'after the fact' picture, not what to really expect on a person-by-person basis.  And how about that 'statistic' about being more likely to get hit by a bus?  Where the hell did that come from?  I have a bus, so am I more likely to get hit by one?  Actually, I'm probably in less danger than my hubby, as he's the one that directs me when backing it into the driveway.  I'm not denying the usefullness of statistics, but to rely on them on a personal basis just doesn't seem too useful.

And JK, that chocolate condom thing is just plain nasty (pretty funny, but nasty).

I think I like Bear's suggestion best:

1 out of 300 Americans has HIV. One third of them don't know they have it. Do you think the number of Americans infected with HIV will increase by a huge number in the near future?

Infected: April 2005
12/6/06 - Diagnosed HIV positive
12/19/06 - CD4 = 240  22% VL = 26,300
1/4/07 - CD4 = 200 16% VL = ?
2/9/07 = Started Kaletra/Truvada
3/13/07 = CD4 = 386 22% VL ?

Yes... it already has been... because people are living longer... well, that's only one of the reasons.

If your figures are correct I think it will increase.
I mean: one third doesn't know, so... probably they were in most of the cases infected by those who don't know...

I think we should have a Statistical Death Party for every member here who reaches 45.3 years old.

Your cake will have chocolate in it.

Oh, and a quick look at a calculator informs me that .3 years is 109 days 12 hours.

Everyone here above 45.3 years old gets a God Damn It, You're Statistically Taking Years Away From the Rest Of Us Party.

Your cake will have cyanide in it.

Yesterday I received an e-mail of a good friend of mine who just moved back to South Africa, after living two years in amsterdam. She was very happy and told me how great her new apartment was, how cute the surfers were, when she looked out the window she could see them challenging the waves, and she told me I should go very soon to visit her in Cape Town.

Today I received a call from another friend, telling me that he received a call from our South African friend's family. She was driving back to her new apartment when she crashed, we still don't know how, but she died instantly. She was the happiest person on earth, only 24 years old and she wasn't HIV positive.

For respect to her I can't believe in average age to die. She wasn't average, she didn't die like it either. I never considered myself average, and I'm surely will never do.

No matter what you do or what you keep yourself from doing, you won't scape death, and I think the point is to remember to live while we have the opportunity to do so. At leas, that's what my friend Martha would have said to me, yesterday, if she were to know what a few hours later was about to happen to her.

Great term for it, Benj. You have invented a new name for a variety of "fisting". Stumping is logical to describe it! :D I still don't want to spend the rest of my 2.3 years trying to see someone doing it with an amputee or much less if the amputee is also a "goatbanger"! Lol. ;)

Sorry to hear of your friend's death.  Certainly a poignant reminder that we never know when our time is up, and to live life to the fullest.

Incidentally, the paper quoted a 1 in 65 chance you'd die in a car accident, which seems pretty high!  The average age of death for that was 41 years.

Hi,

I have a question.  Wouldn't eat be easier to cut off your feet or do you lose more blood from severed hands?  At least it would make more sense to start with the feet/legs and work your way up cutting off the hands lastly before the arms via falling over on the upturned blade.  This must not have been an improvised, not very well planned out, spur of the moment activity.

I will admit the hands are much more symbolically resonant than the feet and perhaps more crippling.

Now if you cut your feet you'd be as bad as if you cut your arms, it's all about blood loss. If you cut your feet it may take few seconds more before you die. Does that help?

Statistics are a funny thing. When they figured the average mean up they might have include the ones that die sooner along with the LTNP.

Let me give an example: If subject A is looking at colleges with the best reputation for making more money on the outside he see's University of SO an SO proclaims its graduates make $68,000 upon entrance in to the work force.

What the statiticians dont tell you is subject J attended the University of So and So and was drafted in to the NBA and makes umpty squat millions a year. His average salary is averaged in with all those other workers that attended the same University and graduated.

There are three kinds of lies, damned lies, and statistics

I think we should have a Statistical Death Party for every member here who reaches 45.3 years old.

Your cake will have chocolate in it.

I think this may be a fitting time to confess something. When I joined AM I lied about my age. I knocked off a decade. I am in fact about to turn 45.3 this week.

I don't believe that (40 something).  That has to be way off.  Maybe 40 additional years after diagnosis.

Oh god I better start planning for the final days...

Well I got a while I guess.

Statistics without disclosure of the population, years in question, source, demographics, etc. are ripe for misinterpretation. I'd love to see the source data (with the median, mode, etc. listed) the reporter used for the article so the numbers could be put in the proper context. The mean could include various populations leading to a standard average where, let's say, 5 people died at 60 and and 5 died at 24 and whole range of ages in-between to reach a mean of 44.5 years.

Oh how I love statistics...

Mike :)

There are Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.

The stuff actuaries use to set insurance rates and so forth.

As off putting as this stuff is, unfortunately there are impacts from statistics that affect our ability to get and be charged for insurance coverage. Also, government policy is also influenced by these statistics.

So while our mortality improves with every new drug approved, and our deeper understanding of how HIV works and How we can manage the diesease, we have stuff that is behind the curve, based in the past, influencing our future benefits and the like.

I've heard it say, and it is very true about HIV treatment and mortality and the what people think about HIV, that "Perception trails reality!", And these statistics are a part of that.

And to add insult to injury, the press now publishes this statistic, further cementing that perception.

All we can do is point it out, and encourage those who generate statistics, be able to explain them, and demand that they be used properly, if at all!

Correctus. And laughter (esp of the variety that makes one pee pee in the pantaloons) is well known for its contribution to a long healthy life. Hence ("Joey said 'hence'!"...sorry, different comedy on Melia's Fave List!), where was I? Oh yes...hence...our witticisms may indeed be prolonging and extending certain individuals existence on this here planet. Meaning, fewer folk than before this thread was actally started may in fact be checking out by the age of 45.3. And if that doesn't make sense, then I wouldn't recommend reading the next bit...

Pavlov never published his cat experiments did he?  He would have been finished!

Day one, rang bell.  Cat fucked off.

Day two, rang bell.  Cat went and answered door.

Day three, rang bell.  Cat said he'd eaten earlier.

Day four, went to ring bell but found that cat had stolen batteries.

Final day, day five.  Went to ring bell with new batteries but cat put paw on bell, so that it only made a "thunk" sound.  Then cat rang own bell!  I... ate... food.

You have no control over your cat! You can’t say to your cat, “Cat, heel! Stay! Wait! Lie down! Roll over!” ‘Cause the cat’s just gonna be sitting there going, “Interesting words… Have you finished?”

Hmm, well everyone knows the Queen isn't up on stats and such but even to a naive person like myself those stats sound a bit off. I can't take it serious because there's not enough information for me. Like is that suppose to be from what time period? From the time they are are poz to when they're considered having AIDS? Is this if the person is taking medication?

And last week, an accident could've taken me out. Who isn't going to worry about the stats and count her lucky stars. Say what you want, after what I went through last week, I am blessed to still be here.

Suppose that out of all the millions of people on this planet who are infected with HIV, exactly one died in the course of a year from HIV. Suppose that one person happened to be 45.3 years old when he died.

Then the average age at death from HIV would be 45.3.

What shocked me was the average at death from HIV was 45.3 years old!

Well thank God I've never been a conformist, otherwise I would be dead two years ago.  :-*

I think it's a losing battle trying to explain how totally meaningless this statistic is, and how it says absolutely nothing about life expectancy or the probability of anyone at any age dying from AIDS or of how many years the mythical "average" person may have left.

A lot of people have had some good-natured fun with this topic, but I can't help but feel that some people, especially those new to this disease, mistakenly think that this statisic says something meaningful about their own lives or chances of survival.

Racingmind is right; this whole topic does nothing but feed anxiety.

Thats why I am glad it was not posted in the "I Just tested POZ" forum. The assumption here is that the members who read an post haev gained a bit of perspective. That's one of the reasons I do not post my own personal health situations in the "I Just tested Poz" forum, and why I submit that forum was created.

Yesterday at my job's cafeteria there was a big black bow on the door, someone had died. When I payed for my breakfast there was a picture with some flowers of the guy who had died. He was the 19 year old boy who made sandwiches here! He died in a car accident the previous afternoon while leaving from work at 4p.m. (apparently fell asleep while driving). I just thought, "My lord, I've been positive for over 20 years and am still alive and healthy. This poor guy was negative and look how he ended up. It was a weird feeling because I outlived his age of death in spite of having hiv... :'(

It's got a lot of those:
1 in 255 chance of a Canadian dying from poisoning.

As a smart ass son of a (non-Canadian) father who really is a statistician, let me point out that there is
a 100% chance of a Canadian drying from poisoning. It's how you word it.

Statistics aren't the problem putting the right data together and then making causal connections and other analysis is the next problem. People are always the problem (like Canadians who DON"T die of poisoning yearly (lol)

Yeah, but I do see this statistical deal as being about the same as that "1 in 1,000 will get HIV this way....1 in 100,000 will get it that way" thing that constantly fuels the fires over in the Am I Infected? forum.  And the whole thing about this kind of breakdown is that it usually side-steps a question like this:

What exactly qualifies as a "death due to HIV / AIDS " ?  Is that KS or MAC or what?  If I get on meds that end up causing liver failure or a heart attack and I croak that way, is that a "death due to HIV / AIDS" or not?

(This might have been addressed up in the thread before, but I don't feel like reading all the way through right now.  I just wanna chime in cuz I feel like blabbing.  Apologies if this has already been discussed.)

Babbling is ok....in fact what you are saying is important. Statistics are made up of reported deaths.  How many people do you know who have died but the family managed to have cause of death...Cancer or something else put on the death certificate? Huh? Well isnt that where statistics come from...reported deaths?

Oh, Lordy! Yes!  Absolutely yes!  That thing has happened all over the place where HIV has been involved- nicely swept under the rug because good people don't talk about such things.  So that is indeed a factor.  I was originally calling into question how the medical world regards this kind of untimely demise (though I suspect I already know the answer).

Wow, who knew my little topic would unleash so many comments.  Yes, stats can be twisted anyway you want.  Obviously these reflect the fact that too many people died too young early in the epidemic, not that we all expire at 45.3 years.

It does disturb me that some want to sweep unpleasantries under the rug though.  Yes, its great that many are living full lives with HIV, but let's be honest, that doesn't mean its all sunshine and lollipops.  I think that does newbies a disservice.

At the end of the day, the best stat out of the article was:

Chance that you'll die of something: 1 in 1

So make the most of your time here. :)

I think it's good to talk about this stuff - all (or at least most) of us think about it. How else can you have an idea of what to plan on in the future? Pension or not? Savings or not? Statistics give us an idea, although it's important to remember as many posts in this thread have pointed out, that they describe the behaviour of a group of people, not individuals.

What I would like to point out again, from my post at the beginning of this thread, was wherever this stat came from it is just plain WRONG in terms of working out how long any of us are likely to live. This is the best study I've read about the subject so far:

Survival of persons with and without HIV infection in Denmark, 1995-2005.
Ann Intern Med. 2007 Jan 16;146(2):87-95.

Basically they matched about 4,000 people with HIV each with about 100 HIV negative people and looked at survival between 1995 and 2005 - a timeframe that covers the start of HAART and its gradual implementation and improvement. Because the study had so many people in it, it was very powerful in looking at mortality over short spaces of time. It showed that survival for HIV positive people improved between 1995 and 2005 and there was marked improvement between early HAART and late HAART. They calculated that a 25 year-old infected in 2005 had another 38.9 years to live (dying at 65 ish), provided they didn't catch HCV.

So mouse - chances are you are going to live for a very long time. Although we still do worse than diabetics, and this study shows that, its only modelling for current therapy - and it can only get better.

Anybody who wants to read the study can PM me, and I'll mail it.

M.

I'm new to this and not on meds yet, and I have to say it did make me feel uncomfortable, I'm 42, didn't make me feel too good to know I  have not long to go, well as long as I get to Europe in September, that was the only thing I told myself i had to do before I go.

But I still hope for longer anyway.

Why would you feel that these statistics apply to you? Its higly likely, since you are not on meds yet, that you will survive well past the "average" age at death. Let me know how life looks in 10 years.  Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

Now this is more "uplifting" than those other statistics. Now I can "back up" my estimated time of dying to after 50 like I mentioned earlier. That would be at 58.9 for me. Sounds good, but even then I'll still probably be playing with or sharing my pecker...!  ;D

OK, I just turned 44 and I have 1.3 years to go. Let's see my B'day was on 1/16 of this year so by 3/16/2008, I will be dead. God, I have to pick out a suit and shoes and a tie and a shirt...get a fake tan...I can't help it....I like to be proactive!!!  ;D
On a serious note, aren't we all dying anyways? Humans are not immortal. We can drop dead right now from a brain aneurysm or heart attack or have an out of control car crash into the room where you are on the computer.
There are so many "variables" to those stats like date of diagnosis, original health of person, drug use and on and on...
Just take each day as it comes - the past is the past and tomorrow is... well... tomorrow AND keep a sense of humour about it all too  ;)

I am not certain of the origin of the 45.3, but such figures mean very little and do nothing to dissuade my capacity and earnest to take care of myself.
At 50 years of age I stopped the ARV's.  My CD4's are up and VL down.  This is sustainable and at a fraction of the cost of allopathic medicines.

I plan to live a ripe old age without thinking about HIV everday and know and believe there are alternatives to the current regime.

don't go by numbers dont let nothing bring you down. Emotions inside you will well up and make you ill, Do the best that you can and live life to the full. If you sit there waiting for it and waiting for the dreaded stat figure to come up thats too sad!!!
