Some inspriration for you all
« on: April 14, 2007, 10:47:12 am »
Today i read an article about a Dutch cyclist named Frank Groenendaal. It really gave me a lot of inspriration so i want to share his story with you.

In 1993 Frank Groenendaal became a professional cyclist. A few months later his girlfriend Christel suffers form a bad pneumonia and Frank returns sick home from a contest in Spain. Their GP advised them to have an hiv test and two weeks after it was clear that they both were hiv infected. Frank was told he could expect to live 6 months to 5 years and the prognosis for Christel was even worse.

Frank was shocked for only 1 or 2 seconds and immediatley realized he and Christel should do the things they always wanted to do. They decided to live together and to get married and for the time being they live at his parents house. At that time the docs told Frank he had to quit cycling and he needed to start with medication. He decided not to take meds, he as a sportsman, was used to a healthy lifestyle so he decided to stay in shape with the right diet and after a few months he started cycling again.

In 1998 his wife Christel dies. During that period Frank was at her side and decided not to bike for some time. Then he starts working again as a project manager in the building business on a free lance basis. He can't get a normal job because of his hiv status. During that time he also notices that there are more people like him working as free lancers so he decides to start a company which functions as an intemediair between the large construction companies and these free lancers.

In the meantime he has started cycling agian he is even winning prizes. As a sportsman and as a business man he's doing so well that he decides to build a villa for himself. In spite of his succes he notices his health suffers from being so busy. So after he caught a PCP he starts in 2003 with the meds. Because the meds make him feel tired he decides to train even harder to get rid of this tired feeling and again he wins prizes.

At this time he owns his own company and he also is the owner of a cycling team. Besides that he himself is still busy cycling and winning prizes. He now lives in his villa where a big picture of his beloved Christel always is watching and supporting him in everything he does.

Is he afraid of hiv? No! He doesn't know when the virus becomes resistant to the meds or the meds destroy his organs. But as long as he lives he expects the chance to die of something else but aids much more realistic.
