Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Really afraid and confused

I have been browsing this website for the past week.  On last Thursday I came in from work to receive a letter from my doctor with the results of an HIV test I took on August 17th or 18th.  The results indicated that my test was "indeterminate" and that I should repeat the test in 4 to 6 weeks. I called my doctor and she returned the call and she seemed really ambigous regarding my concern (this was a first time visit to a new PCP and she informed me she would be giving me an HIV test, I did not ask for one).  She made light of the results and stated "Well I told you, you never know who the people you are sleeping with are doing in their spare time" and she went on "don't worry if you haven't been involved in risky behavior".  I am devastated.  I immediately began to conduct research on HIV using the language in the report I received and ofcourse based on my interperatation I could be infected.  What is puzzling to me, is I am married...which as I have reviewed testimony on this site...doesn't really mean much...when I read the letter and made the call my husband was sitting with me...he seemed just as confused and denied any affairs or adultery.  In conducting my research there was information which indicated that I can be newly infected within a two to six month period.  My husband has had some questionable behavior during this time frame, but I could never prove anything.  I was just suspicious.  I haven't slept with but one other guy in     the past  eight years. I am so worried and do not want to wait three more weeks or even three more months. He is hesitant about taking a test, and I keep asking him too.  I am so confused. Any advise.

First of all an indeterminate result is not that unusual. They happen for all sorts of reasons. So it does make sense to re-test and although I can understand you are worried, at this point I would absolutely not assume the worst.

As far as the situation with your husband is concerned, it seems you two need to have some frank conversation. If you have any reason to doubt that the situation is securely monogamous, then you should be using condoms when you have intercourse. You should do that anyway until your HIV status is resolved.
And to remove any doubts about HIV status, I would suggest you both get tested. You can put it to him that you just want both of you to put your minds at ease about your status rather than accusing him of anything.
