Help me out
« on: August 18, 2017, 06:17:59 am »
Hello, I'm new here. My husband was diagnosed last month as HIV poz after a bout of shingles. We have been together for three years now and I tested negative twice. We have a nine month old baby who is still breastfeeding. Is it possible for my child to be poz while I'm negative? My husband is skeptical about having sex with protection. I wish we could try for another child too. What are our options?

If you are HIV negative than your child is HIV negative. Look I do understand the concern since he was only diagnosed a mouth ago. Have you spoken to your doctor about the breastfeeding?

I ask this in regards to testing as when did you test post last exposure ?  We recommend testing at 6 and 13 weeks post last exposure for a conclusive result, just wondering what your healthcare providers advice was on breastfeeding.

There are plenty of HIV positive parents here who I am sure will chime in. HIV is not a road block to pregnancy or having HIV negative children. This link also has some additional information: https://www.poz.com/basics/hiv-basics/hiv-family-planning

End of the day its your choice how you reduce your risk, condoms/prep/tasp - combination.  Once your husband is UD for more than 6 months and remains adherent to his treatment, the risk to you is negligible at best.  https://www.preventionaccess.org/consensus

You could combined this with PrEP, as an additional peace of mind to you during the time that you try to get pregnant.

One big note If you do decide to go down the PrEP route, talk to your doctor particularly if you are still breastfeeding and get medical advice first.

Anyhow wishing you both the best   :)

Thank you very much everyone for the answers and encouragement. I'm being as supportive as I can be to my husband. He is taking it quite coolly. I hope with time, he gets over this whole thing.
