Title: Thanksgiving Plans Where you going, what you eating?
Post by: WillyWump on November 19, 2012, 08:24:21 pm
What's everyone doing for thanksgiving? And more importantly what are you eating  ;)

I'm going to my Aunt's. I've gone every year since I was 15. The menu is always the same, Turkey, Cornbread dressing, Consomme Carrots, Cauliflower, Canned Cranberry sauce, a bowl of black and green olives, stuffed celery, Deviled Eggs, Dinner rolls, and for dessert we have homemade Apple, Pumpkin and Cherry pies.

This will be the first thanksgiving without my dear mom  :'( And we are going to miss her homemade rolls. and her sassiness at the table. :(

So what is everyone else doing??

Miss P is packing her bags as we speak, and departing at noon tomorrow for the greener pastures of Virginia for an entire week. As far as food goes, I will be making a gruyère mac & cheese and either sauteed rapini in garlic or kale with pancetta. My mother will make the rest.

Child please. Of course we roast a turkey. And have stuffing and cranberry relish.

And at Christmas we have a salt-cured Virginia ham.

Since my mother is heading up North to spend Thanksgiving w/ my younger brother in Illinois, and I have entirely too much school work to do to travel far.... I will be enjoying Thanksgiving at:

http://flanigans.net/

Flanigans... They have a multi-course Thanksgiving dinner going on and plenty of Coronas... and they are only about 2 miles from my place - and close enough to also take a ride to the beach.  8)

Sid and I have decided to mix it up this year.  Instead of going through all the trouble of cooking a traditional Thanksgiving meal for 2 of us (and then all the clean up), we have made reservations.  We will be gorging on meat at a local Churrascaria.  It's more food than I should be eating, but shit -- I'm down 16lbs in 7 weeks and it IS a holiday.

After we will take a stroll through Maymont here in Richmond and then, in the evening, we will help prop of the economy by shopping -- I know some will say that makes me a bad person, but............  it is what we shall be doing!

Are you fo reel?  Even in Texas they have some decent ones.  Texas de Brasil (http://www.texasdebrazil.com/) in Dallas is just one example (and they're not expensive).

There's more to being diverse than eating fake tacos, boo.

You know you're salivating at the mere thought of that gruyere mac & cheese. Believe it or not it also calls for fresh nutmeg.

Well, we usually go to my partner's parents and then to my brother's.  However, my partner's mom has cancelled Thanksgiving and is saying Christmas may be cancelled.  This was a big surprise to us.  She's not one to get all in a huff and cancel things.  We think this is obviously about the big blow up over the Chick-fil-A debacle with my partner's brother and sister-in-law.  We don't want to be around them, but we have been cordial at family functions.  Since the last exchange with them was during the Chick thing, we thought there must be something else.  We found out the whole family has had it with the wife, and not just about the marriage equality/Chick issue.  Many are upset how she talks about everyone behind their backs.  And, they found out she was talking smack about most of us to family in Michigan--how my partner's sisters aren't raising their kids right, etc, etc.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, right?  So, I guess we'll be having dinner at my brother's house.  His partner's family is coming in.  They are the epitome of a Modern Family.  His partner's dad is Filipino and his mother is black.  They live with my brother and his partner.  I swear I talk to his mom by text more than anyone.  We've joked that she's our fag-hag.  So, his partner and another brother look like Tiger Woods.  His other brother has none of the Filipino traits.  They all had a family portrait, including my brother, one wife who is Latino, and another wife who is black.  It really is nice to see such a diverse, extended family.  And, I'm sure the food will be very diverse.  I know there will be lumpia, which is a Filipino egg roll; pancit, which is a noodle and chicken dish; and beef adobo.  We love his dad's cooking.

kind of makes Gruyere Mac & cheese seem all so.........  pedestrian.

I will go out with my friends, Frank, Jose and Oscar for the third or fourth year in a row to a restaurant in Manhattan on 2nd ave. in the 30's.  Then we always go to nearby Kips Bay movie theaters and see a film.  Good friends, good food and a good movie.  Hope everyone goes safe and sound for the holiday weekend.

Love and hugs, Jody :)

We have a lot of military vets who do not have family and no place to go.  I'm facilitating a dinner at the post.  I can't imagine deep fried turkey, but we're cooking up 6 of them along with ham and all the other fixings.  I pulled my typical charm and managed to get enough people to donate the rest of the food.  We'll be begging people to take some home.

We've been doing this for several years and it gets larger each year.  Everyone is welcome and entire families even attend.  We play bar bingo, euchre and Texas Holdem.  Of course, lots of refreshment and plenty of laughter.

After that, we'll be heading to my younger brother's house where we have a huge bonfire party and have a tremendous time once all the women head out for "black Friday shopping.

OK OK! If yall insist I will share my Vodka Cake Recipe ...

Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!!!!)

1 cup sugar, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. salt , 1 cup brown sugar, Lemon
juice, 4 large eggs, Nuts, 1 bottle Vodka,
2 cups dried fruit.

Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality then Repeat.

Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy.

Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity.

Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Vodka. Now shit shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window.

Finish the Vodka and wipe the counter with the cat.

I would think you'd know how to cut n paste text by now at your age  ::)

Seriously, can you use any spirits in this recipe, like maybe bourbon or brandy?  I was thinking that it would taste kinda jazzy if you made it with Alize.

We are hosting Thanksgiving this year. The menu will be traditional: roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans and a special Jello salad that everyone loves. Dessert is cherry cream cheese pie and dirt cake, because not enough people like pumpkin pie. My turkeys always turn out right but for some reason gravy escapes me. I've tried the "fool proof" methods but they are never satisfactory. I confess I buy gravy in a jar (yes, your read correctly, a jar! Why it's even more shocking than the Jello!) and then doctor it with sautéed mushrooms, a little garlic and sage.

My turkeys always turn out right but for some reason gravy escapes me. I've tried the "fool proof" methods but they are never satisfactory.

Since my mother died 12 years ago I could never match the giblet gravy she made until a few years back when I saw an episode of Paula Dean's version.  It's pretty close to how my mom use to make it.

4 cups turkey stock or chicken stock, I use the latter of the two.
  2 chicken bouillon cubes
  2 teaspoons of poultry seasoning
2 tablespoons of reserved uncooked dressing.. (just take it from the dressing you're preparing)
  3 tablespoons cornstarch
  1/3 cup of cold water
   Salt and pepper
  1 hardboiled egg, sliced.

Chop the giblets and the meat that has been removed from the neck.  Using a saucepot (I use the pan the turkey came out of because the drippings add flavor) bring the stock to a boil.  Add the giblets, bouillon cubes, poultry seasoning, and raw dressing to the mixture.  In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water, and add to the boiling stock, stirring constantly.  Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook and stir for about 3-5 minutes.  Add salt and pepper, to taste, and add the sliced boiled egg.

Travel plans: I just completed my trek from my bedroom to the kitchen. Where I will cook the traditional thanksgiving meal while my daughters volunteer at a local event to feed those less fortunate.
Food: I will be baking a turkey, basted and injected with my special sauce..(I mix coca-cola with brown sugar and let it carmelize. I inject that into the turkey in various places and use the left overs to baste the turkey while cooking..I made this up about 6 years ago and the kids love it, so there you go) I also make my moms cornbread dressing, a broccoli casserole, some sweet potatoes and a couple of pies.  There will be gibblet gravy and cranberry sauce to go with that..
I will also be basting myself with some Crown Royal throughout the day

We had a wonderful meal with 4 other couples we know, then cam ehome to welcome Mom who's not been to stay over with me in a dozen years. We've been cooking a chicken all night, as she's teaching me how to make her fantastic chicken and dumplings, but we're taking a break so that Santi and I can take her to The Salt Lick. I don't think it's all that but it's become rather well-known an she's never been so we agreed to take her. I told her we might run into Sandy B there. Then we're taking her to Whole Foods to shop for vanilla beans. It's a nice holiday!
