HOW TOXIC ARE TRUVEDA AND PREZISTA IN THE BODY.
« on: December 11, 2010, 07:37:59 am »
I am on Atripla for 4yrs now, Some of the effect was heart beating(druming) at night, Leg pains and hips , borns and etc. Though my Doctor insisted I keep on the drug, (which made me suspicious, am  not saying  conspiracy theory here, but forcing me on the drug (Atripla) made me wondering).
Now I have been told my next Combo could be TRUVEDA and PREZISTA)
my research revealed the Truveda is mini Atripla again. (Though I wonder why some Doctors are much concentrated on Atripla stuff for their patient). I am speechless.
Please anyone here with some experience not  theory about Truveda and Prezista?
Please, write  me any thing. Thanks

Hello Bonn,

Truvada, has two of the components that make up Atripla.  Sustiva, which is a non -nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase (NNRTIs ) is part of Atripla.  I have never been on that med, nor have I been on the Emtriva portion of Truvada.

You doctor is taking you off Sustiva, and replacing it with Prezista.  Prezista is another class of drugs, known as protease inhibitors.  I have never been on Protease inhibitors either.

These drugs, as are all the HIV medications, are powerful drugs.  Did you ask your doctor about the toxicity, or possible side effects of prizista? and what may be expected after taking it long term?

I went off Viread which is part of Atripla and Truvada, one year ago.  I noticed that when I was on viread, that my hips were bothering, shortly after starting on it back in 2004.

But,  My hips are still giving me a little bit of problem now and then, but then I am also 59 years old.

Sorry I can't give you any personal experiences with the other medication.

, Leg pains and hips , borns and etc.

I wanted to add this also, from the drug section of the site:

"The Viread in Truvada may cause bone problems. In one clinical trial conducted by the manufacturer involving HIV-positive patients who were new to HIV therapy, Viread [combined with Sustiva and Epivir] caused decreases in bone mineral density (osteopenia) at the hip and spine. Researchers are currently looking into the seriousness of this possible side effect. If you have a history of bone fracture or are at risk for osteopenia, your doctor may want to consider ordering bone scans on a regular basis while you are taking Truvada. While it's not clear if calcium and vitamin D supplementation can help this side effect, it might be beneficial if you are taking Viread."

Hey Bonn,

Did your doctor explain how these drugs work or why they are prescribed in threes?

Truvada, which is one pill containing two medications, Emtriva and Viread, is what is know as a backbone drug. From that foundation, doctors typically add a third drug from one of four other classes of HIV meds. Truvada belongs to a class of drug call nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors, called "nukes" for short.

Atripla is the number one medication right now because it is sooooo easy to take, and, if you can tolerate it, is very effective.

Atripla is a combination of three drugs in one pill: Truvada (Emtriva/Viread) and Sustiva.

Sustiva belongs to a class of HIV drug called a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor., or "non-nuke" for short.

I know many who have no problems with Atripla and are doing well.

Prezista is one of the newest protease inhibitor, or PI, which is a different class of medication from both the Truvada and Sustiva.

The reason for the multiple meds is the virus multiplies very rapidly, and very sloppily, and can actually reproduce itself around a drug, causing what what we call resistance. With a three-drug combo, the virus is being held in check by multiple drugs on multiple levels of the reproductive process, thereby reducing the risk of resistance development.

Ray already gave the links for descriptions of the individual drugs, so I won't.

Just keep in mind the virus you are living with is far more toxic than the meds you are taking.

HUGS,

Mark

The two meds in Truvada are the backbone of most people's HIV treatment so most people with HIV are on them. There is a small minority that experience kidney problems, usually people who have had underlying kidney issues. Most HIV meds (and HIV itself) cause bone density issues, not just Viread, so it's a good idea to take vitamin D/Calcium supplements as well as to check kidney function when going in for one's regular lab work.

Having said that, Prezista/Truvada is an excellent combo; I assume you are also going to take Norvir as a booster?

In the near future there will be even better meds available and in the meantime these are pretty darn good.

It may be true that the Atripla is resposible for the Legs , knee and hip pains. But I am just not sure why my Doctor did not want to act on my complain since about the pains.
I use to go out Jogging  before I started Atripla 4years ago, but now I cant  even run again, even playing keepfit game like football ends me up with severe hip , joint, knee pains.
One could blame  Atripla, maybe I will have to tell my Doc. to have a second thought about placing me on Truveda(Mini Atripla) again.

Bonn, it might be a good idea to check out other possible causes of your joint pain. If your hiv doc isn't interested, go see your GP instead. Also, have you been checked for hep C? Hep C can cause the type of pain you're talking about - it caused hip pain for me to the point where for a time, I had to use a cane to get around.

Ann.
Thanks for your advice.  I have no Heps according to my medical result.  I was just trying to outline my experience  since I started taken Atripla, one having to be the Pains lasting than other side effect.

My concern is I am told that my new Combo would have Truveda(mini Atripla) and Presizta.
Really wanted to here something about, anything, about Truveda.

I enjoy the discussion on this site, infact, the site and the people here, are just like my real closest familly.
I am very happy for the concern toward one another here. I appreciate.

Bonn - why do you keep calling Truvada, 'mini-Atripla'?

Bonn - why do you keep calling Truvada, 'mini-Atripla'?

Because  Truveda has the two medecine  that made up a full Atripla when Sustiva is added.
In simple maths.  Truveda plus Sustiva  equal to Atripla. :)

I'm aware of the components that make up Truvada but given that it doesn't include Sustiva, it's factually incorrect to call Truvada 'mini-Atripla'.

Indeed, if you want to look at iit in, as you say, 'simple maths' terms, if you take the number 3 and then subtract 1, that doesn't make it a mini 3, it becomes something else which = 2.

Bonn, you should still check into other possible causes of your joint pain. It could possibly be something like arthritis, for example. It's easy, but not always accurate, to blame everything that goes on with our bodies on the meds or the virus itself.

And I agree with Zohar - it's not correct or helpful to call Truvada "mini" Atripla. :)
