Title: "No marriage for you!!!!"
Post by: darryaz on January 26, 2014, 08:31:54 am
Only in Oklahoma.......  ::)

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/01/25/3205541/oklahoma-lawmaker-ban-marriages-revival-jim-crow-tactic/

Interesting that he thinks it's acceptable to trample the rights of over a million str8 couples just to discriminate against a few hundred same-sex ones.

If it wasn't so stupid it would be funny.

Sadder still..... people actually voted for this guy.

EDIT:  I just read the article again and realized he's from MY HOME TOWN!!!!!

In this day and age, when the local gets national coverage - I say let them go ahead and ban all marriage, and see how that brings attention to such steadfast denial of civil rights, equal rights, and therefore forces the issue to a compromise.

As part of a “massive resistance” campaign urged by Virginia Sen. Harry F. Byrd, the Virginia legislature ordered the closure of schools subject to a desegregation order. When that tactic was invalidated by courts, one county went so far as to shut down its public school system entirely from 1959 until 1964.

That's funny, my Dad mentioned that exact event when we were discussing this.

BTW, I am personally in favor of eliminating all governmental involvement in marriage, leaving it as strictly a religious rite (as was originally intended).

If the government needs to recognize relationships (which it does for a variety of reasons), then Domestic Partnership for same- and opposite-sex couples seems more reasonable to me.

One other thought.....
What a shame Mike Turner is such a bigot.  Because he's really very cute.  (I'll add him to my list of cute troglodytes in politics alongside Stacey Campbell, Paul Ryan and Aaron Schock)

I was thinking the same thing! ;D

Another thought going through my head while reading the article... talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face! Jeeze, these arseholes will do anything to get their bigoted way. They act like three-year-olds. Scratch that, I know three-year-olds who behave better than the majority of republican politicians. >:(

It would be neat to see the law pass. So much fun seeing the bible thumpers pushing their doctrine and squirming in their pants. No marriage, no sex, according to their own beliefs. ;)

That is a bad idea.  I think we need less connections between Church and State.  Too many people think their religious beliefs are perfectly rational justifications for law, public policy, including civil rights, and public education policy, etc...

Exactly.  Register as domestic partners with the government if you want legal benefits.  And SEPARATELY get married in the church if you want that designation.

It's only "marriage" because that's the name we choose to give it.

Oh well, I suppose it's a moot point anyway.

I'm for full marriage equality, any thing else reeks of separate but equal to call it any other thing than marriage  . We are not trying to redefine marriage, we are trying to enjoy the benefits and commitments of the institution . Its semantics I know but its just how I feel .

No one goes to get domestic partnered, we go to get married just like everyone else .

Marriage comes into the US culture from centuries of cultural, legal, and religious heritage.  I don't mind religious heritage influencing how a country makes up its constitution. But when it comes down to law, laws and rights should be non-denominational and based on a constitution that isn't specifically based on religious doctrine or at least doesn't rely on any church to authenticate its laws and rights granted.

I think people want marriage, not domestic partnerships.  The common consensus in US culture is that marriage is just two people, for example. So, OK, no polygamy.

The civil right to same sex marriage between people has to be forced by a laic government because two many religions for the moment don't see civil rights this way.

Fortunately there is separation of church and state so its time to extend full civil rights to LGBTGQ etc

leaving it as strictly a religious rite (as was originally intended).
The original intent of marriage was often to use children (especially women) as part of a barter system (ie secular transaction) to join houses, tribes, and families together. It was not a religious rite to trade off a daughter for some goats.  ::)

If the government needs to recognize relationships (which it does for a variety of reasons), then Domestic Partnership for same- and opposite-sex couples seems more reasonable to me.
don't be deceived by the flim-flam of nomenclature. "marriage"? "domestic partnership"? How are these any different - except for playing into religion and continuing some difference/discrimination. Since "marriage" is the word society has been using for hundreds of yrs. let's just stick with that.

what really needs to happen is for the government to simply quite being influenced by the religious aspect.

The way marriage happens now is that ALL marriages must have a marriage license. Hence all marriage is secular already - and so should be open to all adults. Whether those adults take that license afterwards and go to a church for a wedding is their own business. Some people do, some people don't.

Love it!!!  Perhaps I was giving humans in the 21st century too much credit.

well, if same-sex marriage is supposed to be just like heterosexual marriage, then we'll well on the way with this horrid spectacle. Las Vegas chapels (complete with Elvis-preachers and stripper bridesmaids) and "Gay Divorce Court" are right around the corner. ;D

Yeah, I know.  No one can create a bigger spectacle than the gays.

Madonna is suppose to be involved.  I'm worried.  Queen Latifah is suppose to be involved, too.  I am curious to see if she comes out.  I am still wondering whether these couples with just be actors and not really be married.  We will see in a few minutes.

Modified:

Okay, I thought it was very beautiful.  When Madonna came out, I thought she was going to steal the spotlight.  But, she didn't.  When the Olympics are about to start and states like Indiana are debating adding discrimination into their constitution in 2014, I think this was appropriate and done well.

Because she does stuff like attend LGBT Pride in Long Beach, goes up on stage and says "Youz my peeps!" and then people assume she's coming out, then she goes to some magazine a month later and says "No, that's not what I was saying" (?)

Thing with marriage and religion, atheist can legally marry. And they have no opposition from these self righteous bible thumpers.
If they went after the atheist as they do the gays, I'd still disagree but give them credit for consistency.
But when they only attack gays and no one else, not divorcees nor atheist nor people married outside the church as in civil ceremonies, then it becomes crystal clear their opposition comes down to plain simple bigotry.
And besides, religion has never been requirement in marriage.
So just remember, when they attack same sex getting married and never atheist getting married, that gives themselves away for what they truly are.
But we already knew that.

Jesus said nothing about gays but did have something to say about divorce:

Mark 10:2-12

2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.

4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

5 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

I don't see any big Christian movement to make divorce illegal. This is because people cherry pick the parts of religious doctrines that support their world view and ignore the parts that contradict it. There is no consistency and frankly I'm glad their isn't. I don't to live in a society based on what people think society valued 2000 years ago. Humanity evolves and marriage should adapt to serve the need of contemporary society.
