We need a geek squad
« on: June 08, 2011, 06:19:08 am »
I've noticed lately that I'm not as sharp at computers as I once was.  I have quite a few things I could ask specifically ask, but I'll start one at time.   8)  I could spend considerable time "googling" it, but I figure collectively, we probably all know the solutions.

I've been purchasing Microsoft's software since the days oWord Perfectct.  I currently have 3 different versions that I've purchased over the years because with each new system, I had to purchase another version.  Well now, with my new laptop, I have to once again purchase it.  I called them to see if I could just pay to upgrade mexistingng Microsoft Office Suite since I'm not a able to.  Have to pay full retail.  So I will loose Word, Excel and Power Point.  Access also, but I don't use it.

Does anyone use other software that the file types compatibleable with others who still use Office?

Open Office is free, is very similar to Microsoft Office and can open your files.

Thanks!  That's exactly the type of program I'm looking for.  I bookmarked it and will study it after my pot of coffee kicks in.  I'll try it for sure and see if everything is compatible.

Edited:  I downloaded this software and created each file type and sent an email attachment to my other email address and attempted to open those files on the home computer.  I would have to download the software on that system in order to view the files.  If I send attachments to people, they won't want to install the software to convert the files.

Is there something that prevents you from uninstalling the version you purchased on your prior system and installing it on your new machine?  You would need the Windows Office CD from your prior purchase. Or is it that you want the upgrades to the new version of Office?

I uninstalled it from my old laptop and I have the discs and product registration codes but they won't allow it to register because it's an older version.  I don't care about the added features of the new products, I created spreadsheets for many things and just a place to store them.

Word Perfect isn't from Microsoft, by the way.  It was released in 1980.  The first version of Word (for Windows) was released in 1989.   ;)

Office 2003,  which was released in 2003 (surprise!) works fine with current systems and with current extended file formats such as the 'x' (.xlsx, .docx, etc) used by default in Office 2007  and 2010.  There's a compatibility pack that must be downloaded and installed for it to handle these formats, however.  OpenOffice works well most of the time, but it's not 100% compatible.  It works fine for basic word processing and spreadsheets, but if you need Access, PowerPoint, or have more complex word processing or spreadsheet needs, Office is the way to go.

What version are you using that requires you to register?  I've installed / used '95, '97, 2000, XP (2002), and 2003 versions and have never registered them.  As long as I had the CD installation key, I was fine.

An internet search engine is your friend here.  Typing in a comment into a search engine with a problem will often lead you to a tech forum with an answer.

Here's the rather helpful link that was the third pick on the page when I typed in "microsoft won't let me move office to my new machine"

It suggests using the activate by phone option and quotes from Microsoft on how to do it.

I knew that, just didn't type it correctly.  I was so accustomed to wordperfect and Lotus that I initially resisted the change.  I started using them in college in the mid 80's back when you had to understand dos and how to write in code.  Certainly don't miss that now.

I have 4 different versions of Microsoft that I've purchased;
Office 2000
Office XP
Office 2000 PRO
Windows XP PRO

I have all the discs and Product key numbers but they said none are compitable with my new operating system.  I might just call them back and use my charming personality to persuade someone to offer a solution that isn't going to cost a fortune.

Thanks for the advice.  I was hoping someone else had already worked this issue.  Maybe I should explain further why I get upset when I'm continually am suggested to do google and internet searches.  2 years ago I was legally blind and I have not fully recovered my vision.  I can't spend as much time searching and reading as most people because I start suffering vision fade.  Not sure why I get defensive about that issue?

WordPerfect is still around.  It's part of Corel Office.  There's been many changes over the year from the old DOS version,  With the advent of Windows. most people switched to using Microsoft Office.

Over the years, Corel have continued to develop it into a wonderful software package, it's just so much easier to use than using Microsoft Office.

People think you're a bit stupid when I've tried to tell people about how good it is.  I hate going back and having to use Microsoft Office.  It's just so crap.

You know,  if you haven't purchased a version of Office since 2002 (XP and 2002 are the same thing),  perhaps it really is time to upgrade!  However, XP should still work in Windows 7.  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/is-office-xp-compatible-with-windows-7/abbe2f98-569e-4123-b0c7-2eb785f13315.  Amazon has Office 2010 for $115.  http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Office-2010-Student-Version/dp/B00337D8U6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307538488&sr=8-1, but it doesn't come with Outlook, Publisher, or Access.  I really didn't like 2007 all that much and stuck with 2003, but I do like 2010 quite a bit more.

I've never found WordPerfect easier to use, though I haven't used a version in probably three or four years.  It was different, but not easier to me.  Ami Pro by Samna, which later became Word Pro, was the easiest word processor to use for me.  I last used version 3.1 from '92.  This was after Lotus bought Samna; Lotus was later bought by IBM.  The bad part about Ami Pro was that it came on about 19 floppy discs... what a PIA to install!

I knew that, just didn't type it correctly.  I was so accustomed to wordperfect and Lotus that I initially resisted the change.  I started using them in college in the mid 80's back when you had to understand dos and how to write in code.  Certainly don't miss that now.

Unbelievable, I call their activation department again ready to use all the charm at my disposal and the gentleman was able to activate it immediately.  He wasn't sure why I was told differently unless it was someone fairly new and wasn't versed on older products.  Either way, I'm content and won't have to reformat my entire file system.

Thanks guys!

Congrats!  I knew it would work.   ;)  Why would you need to change file systems to use Office?  I've never heard of such a thing.

When I installed the software, I wasn't able to activate and every time I opened Word, PP or Excel I would get a message telling me that I had so many visits left before it would deactivate.  I was down to 7 more times and didn't want to loose my files.  If I chose a different processing system, I'd have to convert each of those files over to the correct format extension.

But glad you found a solution.
