Aussie Olympian reveals HIV status
« on: August 08, 2012, 02:07:48 pm »
Do we need more proof that HIV is no longer a death sentence if managed well? A great inspiration and gives a lot of confidence.
This was the effect of US diver Greg Louganis interview of his battle with HIV and being a gay Olympian. Their should be many more..

I believe that's the first time I've ever read the comments section following an article about hiv in a general public newspaper where there wasn't a single negative remark. Refreshing!

Louganis and Wallace are both Olympians from the past - and it would be fantastic if their coming out about their hiv status encourages some current Olympians to also come out. With over 14,000 athletes from 205 Olympic teams and 170 Paralympic teams, there's bound to be a few.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Ah. Didn't realise that. It was still nice to read all the positive feedback he got. :)
