It chaps me when we all get into a pissing match where "it's raining harder where I'm standing".
It's not.
Even if it was, you'd still be wet.

Well Said. Just how wet does someone have to be before they're as wet as they are supposed to be?

No, respect is earned.  Some of those who've had it relatively easy and those who've gone through hell with this disease have my respect.  Some who have been diagnosed 2, 5, 10, even 20 years ago have earned it; others haven't.  Let's lose this feeling of entitlement of respect and do what we can to earn it; that benefits all of us.  After all, who wants to listen to the grumpy old man who lost a leg in the war?  The warmhearted grandmother who's understanding and quick with a hug gets my vote every time.  Take care.

Very Eloquent and David, Can I have a hug? I might not be a grandmother but I make a mean batch of cookies!
When it gets hard I always listen to my favorite song of all time..........

"You know, a lot in this thread makes me realize how little, if any, respect members here should have for me.  After all, I've only known I'm HIV+ for a little over a year, have only had one OI, have had an AIDS diagnosis for 3.5 months, been on one regimen that's working well, have tolerable side effects, am not stuck in the bathroom for hours on end, am still working, and have insurance.  I'm curious as to how long I have to have this HIV and AIDS diagnosis before I'm worthy of respect.  How many failed regimens or OI's do I have to go through before I earn this respect that's spoken about here?  How low do I have to fall before I'm respectable? " says David...

That is exactly how I feel when it comes to the respect issue, nicely said. I have never had to bury anyone who died from aids but have known a few who passed from it. I have never trivialized anyone's experience and for the most part those who have had to deal with this for over 20 years, I tend to pay attention to their posts especially.

My questions is why should we not listen to our doctors? Aren't they there to help? Maybe my brain is still rattled from my concussion but it sounds like to me like doctors are being made out to be the bad guys. Yeah, I know there are some who treat you like a number and may not know much about hiv but what about the ones who specialize in it? They don't know what they're talking about either?

There isn't much I can say about the meds because I have yet to start them. But I hear many say how toxic they are, I'm not doubting that but aren't the meds better today than they were years ago? Isn't that progress to some degree? Or is it better to just not take them, not knocking anyone who chooses not to, and just let the virus run wild and do it's worse? For me, who has lived with this for 10 yrs w/o meds, this is confusing as hell to me. What is it exactly that you are saying?

Michelle ... You of all people get our respect here.  You have a lot on your plate and you have all you can do to keep going on.
There are lots of gay men who have never had to worry about children for instance ( myself included) but who have had a lot of HIV related issues to deal with.  Add  children to the mix and I just cannot imagine that burden.  I have the utmost repect for all the people, like yourself Michelle, who have  HIV and who are raising children and coping with HIV. I am aware that gay men have families and  many gay men make their own "families".  I have had only a couple of gay friends die who were married and had children.  Most of my friends were single or had partners.
Luckily your child is not a baby, but there are those in the forums with BABIES and they are HIV positive.  It blows my mind.
modified to add:  I appreciate that Tim is feeling the need to post a LAMENT. We need to understand that feeling.

Tim,

I share your lament.  I was thinking about my friend who shot himself in the head in the early 90s when he found out he was positive.  I am sad because with all of the meds and stuff he would still be here today.  He just didn't know what the future was going to be or he assumed what it was going to be back then.  Thank you for remembering and carrying these people, lest we forget.

Kindest,
Drew

Hmm, I think it's that HAART has made things a little easier on doctors (yup, even HIV specialists) but some doctors want it to be a lot easier, not just a little easier. In other words, doctor laziness. For example, in this post http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=474.msg124400#msg124400 the patient asked his doctor about fatigue/insomnia and the doctor told the patient to get his ass to a gym and lose weight!!!!!!  :o The nerve of that doctor to say that. A quality doctor who cares will ask questions and have good bedside manner
