I hope we now spend the next three months debating whether or not to get a flu shot -- it's an AIDSmess annual event.

I WILL NOT BE GETTING MY FLU SHOT FOR ANOTHER SIX WEEKS. I HOPE I DON'T DISAPPEAR WITH GRANNY!

totes... gotten one every year for 2 decades and the only time I've gotten the flu was when swine flu appeared and the vaccine for it was delayed. It was horrible.

I always get one too...but stew about when to get it.  Is this too early...or not?  Curious what others think.

IIRC a flu shot is supposed to protect you for 12 months, minimum. I wouldn't stress about when to get it.

I think its the perfect time . If you get the shot now you are up and running in a month or so when flu season kicks off .

I do the "best" timing thing, too.  I usually go for late October to early November. I hear conflicting things-- it protects you for 12 months to it begins to weaken by 6 month mark.  January to February would be the 6 month mark, and that's when flu is often peaking.  I am still interested in the higher dose version, as I do often wonder how well a regular dose works in poz patients.  If the elderly need the stronger dose, then it must be safe, so why not?

Here's what Dr. Gallant said (I am trying to break a record to linking to him),

"There is a study showing that high dose flu vaccine is safe and gives better antibody responses than standard flu vaccine in HIV-positive patients (McKittrick N, et al. Improved immunogenicity with high-dose seasonal influenza vaccine in HIV-infected persons: a single-center, parallel, randomized trial. Ann Intern Med. 2013;158:19-26.)  However, they didnít look at clinical outcomes, so we donít know whether the better immune repsonse made a difference."

Tednlou2:  thanks for the great link to Dr. Gallant.  It provides a wealth of information.  I did not know of that link before you posted it below.  I will refer to it regularly now.

On the thread topic:  flu shots are good things.  I've had them for many years now, even before my HIV diagnosis, and have never contracted the flu.  I recently read somewhere that this year's flu strain is the same as last years, so this year's vaccine will be very similar--if not the same--as last year's, so forum folks who got last years may be able to wait a few weeks longer until they get this year's (for those who worry about getting the shot too early in the season).

Did not mean to confuse people, Jeff G.  I'm sure your recent flu shot was not a left over from last year.  My point is that I read somewhere that this year's flu strain is the same as last year's, so the formula for this year's vaccine may be the same as for last year's.  Usually, the strains differ slightly (or more than slightly) from year to year, so a different vaccine needs to be formulated.  So my point was that if someone got the flu vaccine last year in, say, November, since this year's strain is the same (if what I read is correct), that person could wait until November or so, if they were worried about getting this year's shot too early.  That's all.  I'm sure your recent vaccine is fresh (usually they are formulated in the summer before the flu season) and will protect you fine.

Guess I'll ease off on the botox, tweezing and designer clothes.

You don't have to have vintage AIDS to get one.  ;)  Many doctors think everyone should get one regardless  of if you're in a high risk situation or not.

I was under the understanding that the shot I got today was this years flu shot ???

I am pretty sure the vaccine you received was for the 2014-2015 flu season.

I was looking back at my records.  On 9/24/12, I receive the flu shot, this was for the 2012-2013 season.

I received on on 9/19/13.  This is for the 2013- 2014

I will get the next one in 4 or 5 weeks, and that will be for the 2014-2015 flu season. At least this is the way it is explained to me.

By the way, that Pneumonia  shot I receive on Tuesday morning, didn't sit well with me. Had a headache most of Wednesday until about noon today.  Not sure if it was the shot or not, but headaches are something I very rarely get. Coincidental !  :P

Anyway, no headache !

True story ... The director of the clinic at UAB asks me last year did the flu shot make me sick and my first thought oh no ... my infectious disease doctor thinks you can get the flu from a flu shot ... the kind they give us thats not a live virus . She went on as to how she got such a robust immune reaction from last years vaccine that she now understands how some people can swear up and down they got the flu from the shot when she knows damn well they did not . The same happened to me last year for the first time ... felt just like mild flu for days after the shot ... it didn't do me like that this year . After last year I do understand why some people insist they get the flu ... always thought maybe some folks got a little ache and the rest was psychosomatic .

Don't get one! Jenny McCarthy sez they give you autism.

When they finally develop an HIV vaccine, she's ignorant enough that she'll declare it causes AIDS.

I don't understand why anyone takes celebs serious just because they're beautiful.  Hell, she was a nursing school drop out who became a playboy centerfold.  Yeah, that's who I'll take my medical advice from.  Hell, even I completed nursing school.

I think it was antidepressants that Tom Cruise spoke out against several years ago.  People believed him and he's a high school drop out.

got mine today.....after watching the pharmacist almost get into a fight with a patient over the new hydrocodone laws that went into effect last Monday.

If you have refills on your pain meds then you will have to go back to your doctor and get another prescription on a triplicate pad. Docs are no longer allowed to write for refills on pain meds anymore.  At least here in Texas, but I think its a FDA mandate for all states.

I did not have much in the way of an immune response this year unlike last year when I did feel crappy for a day or two. After last year I completely understand why some folks insist that they get the flu from a flu shout when they can not . I would still get the shot even if I had a rough couple of days because if I get sick I'm on my own with no one to help if I need it .

out of the 22+ yrs on meds, I started checking my % a few yrs ago. When I saw that only on good days did it even begin to approach 20, I went back to not caring about the %.  ;D Like I told my doc, my 320ish cd4s have kept me out of the hospital for 15 yrs so they must be doing their job right ;)

my arm isn't sore this morning and my headache is gone... and I don't have the flu, so that shot is doing its job right. LOL

I do init! Every 5 years.

I was told my 5 year shot I got was all I would need.  I also got the Prenvar 13 or whatever it's called.  Is this what you all know to be true?  I don't quite understand why I needed another, 5 years after the first, and wouldn't need another in 5 years.  I do know I got pneumonia right at the end of the first 5 years.  Could be a huge coincidence, but it does make me wonder whether it was wearing off.  I was just 2 months shy of my 5 year anniversary of the first vaccine.
Title: Re: Flu shot .
Post by: Miss Philicia on October 23, 2014, 10:52:00 pm
There are two pneumonia vaccines: PCV13 and PPSV23 -- someone can correct me if I am incorrect, but for someone with HIV the recommended course is to get the PCV13 shot first followed 8 weeks later by the first PPSV23 shot, then a booster shot of PPSV23 again five years later. That is then all you need for life I believe.

source (http://www.webmd.com/vaccines/pneumococcal-vaccine-schedule)

When I got my flu shot today I had them check my records and I had my first shots in '04 and then the last one in '09 so this makes sense. They did this also because my last NYC doctors failed to forward my records so we were starting from scratch so I may have already had this done, but they said never mind no harm done/better safe than sorry blah blah blah.
Title: Re: Flu shot .
Post by: ChavinKnight on October 31, 2014, 05:06:31 pm
Correct re: pneumonia vaccines, except that you also need another PPSV23 after age 65, unless your first five-year booster is after that age.... Also, if you should happen to get PPSV23 before PCV13 (as I did, unfortunately) you have to wait a year for the 23, or risk them canceling each other out.  I don't understand why...the five-year interval between PPSV23 vaccinations must be maintained.

Also a good idea for us to get meningitis vaccine.... Two doses, 8 weeks apart, followed by a booster every five years.  Also, people with no spleen, regardless of hiv status should be vaccinated, and require two injections.

My doctor has me get a flu shot in September, followed by a booster in January...4 months later.  However, I work in a high-risk setting, so maybe two flu shots a year aren't needed by everyone.  I don't know.

I used to only be focused on the vaccines for hepatitis and the flu.  After hearing from an acquaintance of an otherwise healthy man dying of invasive pneumococcal disease (he had no other risk factors and was not immune compromised), I started to pay closer attention to the recommendations for HIV positive people.

Stay healthy everyone....
