Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

PEP questions

Hello & thank you so much for having a board like this. I have questions about the PEP I'm taking and I don't feel like I have a doctor I can ask.  I know the information is definitely out there, so please accept my apologies in advance--I just feel so scatterbrained right now I can't think straight.

I was assaulted by a stranger early Saturday morning, and I went to the ER late Saturday night and got my first dose of truvada (& other std prophylaxis). I just wasn't thinking straight & didn't want to really talk about it to the ER Dr. He gave me the PEP dose and prescription reluctantly, really emphasizing how toxic it was & that it probably wasn't necessary.  He was really nice, I was just too embarrassed to say what happened & made it sound like I had unprotected sex w someone I was seeing or something.  What happened was high-risk, I only wish I were flipping out about saliva or urine in a toilet or some of the things I've seen on here, not to make fun of anybody, just saying.

I tried to follow up w. my GP on Monday to get any instructions on taking this, but I just couldn't tell him what happened & told him I accidentally touched a needle in a trashcan; his feeling was taking the PEP wasn't worth the risk, so I didn't get any information from him. On websites it seems like *every* medication interacts with truvada; I get that it's hard on your liver. Can you tell me anything I should really know, and what kind of painkiller & sleeping pill I can have? People who take truvada long-term sometimes take other meds, right?  I actually can't ask on a sex assault forum; I waited more than a day to even see posts on two SA boards, and they're all "Absolutely NO discussion of medicine or medical advice!"  Really.  I don't feel like I could call someone without crying. TY so much for anything you can tell me.

Before making any further comment, you need to be specific about what a "high risk assault" entailed?

Are you male or female? Was intercourse involved?

Yes there was and yes I am. I took 1 pill at the ER & got a 30 day prescription filled.

Anon,

Sorry to hear about the assault.

The med that you are on is actually two meds together; tenofovir DF and emtricitabine. You can read more about them in the Treatments section of this website.

You can also check for any interactions with other meds on the hiv-drug-interactions website. You will have to know the generic name of any med you want to check - you can find the generic names by googling the trade name.

Good luck with the meds. You should be fine - it's only for 28 days and you can do it. I would strongly suggest you get in contact with Rape Crisis or another source of counselling. Being raped - even if it was date rape - is nothing to be ashamed about. Don't buy into the idea of "you had it coming". Rape is a crime of power and violence, not sex. You have nothing to be ashamed about - but your rapist sure does.
