Title: Newly diagnosed, abdominal swelling
Post by: peregrine on February 02, 2009, 10:31:16 pm
Hi Ladies.
I was just wondering if anyone else who is treatment naive, has had any experience with dealing with abdominal swelling and excessive weight gain.  I especiially note the swelling after a meal.
I have started to take flax seed oil supplements and it seems to help the abdominal girth.  Does anyone have any suggestions other than the normal "go on a diet and exercise?"
Because despite the fact that my food intake and activity level has remained stable I still seem to be gaining weight steadily.
Thanks for the input

I won't tell you to go on a diet but perhaps a change in diet might help. Are you taking medications for other conditions, i.e. birth control, depression, etc.? Swelling and bloat and increased fat are very different things, so maybe more details will help clarify. I'm sure someone will be along shortly that can be of some help.

Peregrine,

If you notice the swelling after meals, it's probably the types of food you're eating (this is what I got from my doc when I had the same problem).  This will happen especially if the foods are known to cause gas (brocolli etc.).  I would talk to the doctor.  When it comes to things like this, I think the doctor is the one who probably will have the best answer.
 Luv,
Betty

Thanks for the responses.
I am not on birth control and do not take any meds for depression or anything else for that matter.  Other than the HIV infection, I am in good health mentally and physically.  I have tried to figure out what can be causing this by trial and error but I just cannot come up with it.  I feared ovarian cancer but my WBC is on the low side and that coupled with other factors have caused me to eliminate that as a possible reason for the swellling
As a precaution though, I will visit the OBGyn and see what he has to say.
Thanks again.
