STD Carrier website - How F'd up is this?
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:34:34 pm »
http://stdcarriers.com/

The site explains itself as follows:

Quote
STD Carriers was founded as and still is the first public early warning alert system for identifying potential sources of incurable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The International Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Carrier Registry is database driven list of people with HIV/AIDS, Genital Herpes, HPV, Genital Warts, and Hepatitis C. Our automated content management system (CMS) utilized the power of modern information technology to provide a real time information storage and distribution service that is fully operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

So basically, the idea is that if you are thinking of having sexual relations with an individual you can type their name into the site to see if they are listed as suffering from any of the above diseases. This immediately raises huge flags for me, so I thought I'd bring a discussion here to see what other people think.

Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly,
Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile.

I agree it's f'd. But it looks like they are combing through public sources. Not sure if there is anything that can or should be done about that.  It would be a lot more palatable if they provided some prevention info. But I'm not sure it's a legitimate site.  It looks like one of those spammy things that just want you to see the advertising, teasing you with little more than gossip.

Once I got through the ads, it listed all of five people in my city of over half a million.  All are for herpes, and all are apparently anonymously reported via internet.  One person "has strep-b virus also".   ::)

Three of the reports were by people who believe that they were infected by the reportee, but none of them saw fit to report themselves.

I may be old-school, but I much prefer the term 'VD'.  It's easier to enunciate, as is the parent term, and its euphemistic nature is more ominous.  It even looks more intriguing -- 'STD' looks like it's the love-child of STP and FTD.

Just another example of people not being prepared to take responsibility for their own sexual health.

wow, and the site is still there after being chatted about over 2 and a half years ago. At this rate, I guess we'll keep seeing new threads about that site every so often  ::)

There was a thread about this site a while ago:

http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=24046.0

In that forum thread, a member posted a CNN story about the guy who created the website.  This is so dangerous.  How does this guy or anyone know for sure who gave them an STD with so many having multiple partners.  If you were sure, it is still wrong.  How do you know the person knew they were infected?  If they did, it still seems so wrong.

Funny the women in the video were all for it, but the guys were against it.  The first girl reminded me of some right-winger who has a bunch of sex but thinks her shit don't stink.  I'm just glad this isn't a CDC website where you can do this.  I'm sure there are many lawmakers who would be for it.

This sort of judgemental crap is quite dangerous from a public health perspective. It creates a hostile environment in which people are less likely to honest about what they're doing and only compounds the problem.

I'm not going to check the site,  because my computer lately is not behaving well on "cruising" the net.  However, from what you guys have posted here, seems like the fires of Stigma, and Hate are only being fanned by these kinds of things.

Makes me wonder what an HIV life would be like with total knowledge, and acceptance.  I guess that would be a panacea, and really isn't anywhere near what our current reality is.   As for me; I have outed myself so many times in the last 11 years, via the paper and other sources, I am sure I am on that list.  Funny thing is, I really don't give a damn because I have already been past that trauma of outing.

Thanks Toad for re-posting this very interesting link.  Maybe it is a sure reason for people to out themselves, and not be subject to this kind of hate.
The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

I am sure I am on that list.
nope, you're safe. ;) LOL ;D

in reality this site isn't much of a site, thank goodness. There's only 78 people listed in the HIV transmission section (10 are women) from a few states, with nearly a third (26) from other countries. Just glancing at the 6 or 7 people listed from SC, OH, and NC (all states I have lived in), all of these people are listed because they were arrested. Most got into fights where they spit or bit, and another got 6 yrs in prison for not disclosing to his wife and lying that his hiv meds were for a heart condition.

in was a sad story to read that the SC person from my city listed was about a drunk man that bit his neighbor during a fight in 2009. The drunk had been trying to peep into the windows and the neighbor came out and they had a tussle. The police were only going to charge the drunk man with a misdemeanor until they found out he was HIV+. Even though the bite did not break skin, the charge against the drunk poz man was upped to malice intent to kill.
