How to Survive a Plague
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:00:40 pm »
A good documentary about age of activism... hopefully playing soon at a theatre near you.

The Bottom Line
A major addition to the body of work chronicling the AIDS epidemic, this is a passionate account of the hard-won breakthrough in making HIV a manageable conditon.

Venue
Sundance Film Festival (U.S. Documentary Competition)
Director
David France
Screenwriters
David France, T. Woody Richman, Tyler H. Walk

Words like “important” and “inspiring” tend too often to be meaninglessly attached to non-fiction filmmaking, but in the case of David France's compelling snapshot of a revolutionary period in AIDS treatment, they are amply justified.

PARK CITY – Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of David France’s emotionally charged documentary, How to Survive a Plague, is that despite the wealth of books, films and plays dealing with AIDS, this feels like a part of the story that hasn’t yet been told – certainly not with such probing insight. Packed with fascinating interviews and stirring footage from the trenches, the film deftly shapes its information stream into a powerful drama recounting the highs and lows, setbacks and victories in the fight for an effective HIV treatment.

Picked up by IFC Films sister division Sundance Selects, France’s film is a sequel of sorts to seminal AIDS works like Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart or Randy Shilts’ And the Band Played On. Those and many other chronicles focus on the plague years -- the discovery of the virus, the spread of the epidemic, the battle against an unresponsive government, and the decimation of the gay community in the 1980s.

While it has considerable overlap, How to Survive a Plague is by definition of its title the next chapter. It traces the path from the dark days when AIDS was a death sentence through the protease inhibitor revolution of the mid-‘90s. That breakthrough shift from monotherapy to combination therapy brought a massive decline in AIDS-related deaths in the U.S. and transformed HIV into a manageable chronic illness.

The battle of a small New York-based group of gay activists against the FDA, the NIH and major drug companies might sound more earnest than engaging. It’s not. The film is actually an epic celebration of heroism and tenacity, and less directly, a useful template for any fledgling activist movement, demonstrating the effectiveness of inside/outside strategy. It also shows the enduring government apathy toward gay-rights issues that slowed research funding and cost so many lives.

That's our very own cutie-pie Peter Staley getting hand-cuffed in the photo. Peter Staley, for all you n00bs, is the person who created aidsmeds.com (and sold it years later to poz.com). It's because of Peter we have these forums (poz.com only continued on with them, but he started it). We can also thank Peter for all his involvement in hiv activism over they years. He deserves his retirement - and it's up to all of us to pick up where he and other LTS left off.

Or they consider themselves activists while merely focusing on issues such as disclosure, etc.

Peter is missed indeed.

It's so refreshing to see a queen screaming for an actual cause.

Director:  "OK, in this scene you are a screaming queen."

Me:  "OK, but how do I get into the character and what is my motivation?"

Director: "Honey, just be yourself and scream for a cause close to your heart."

Me: "You byotch!"

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE is screening at the New Directors/New Films Festival in NYC later this month: 9pm on Sat., March 24th, at the Walter Reade Theater, and 6pm on Monday the 26th, at MoMA.

You can buy tickets here:

I'll be at both screenings, so I hope to see some of you there!

Anyway...is there any remote possibility to see it in Italy? Will there be any kind of DVD, or i dunno what release planned in the future?

There will definitely be a DVD at some point, probably early next year (the director has already done some work on DVD extras).

There will be a theatrical release in the U.S. in the early fall, but like most documentaries, it might only show in major markets. Hopefully, before the DVD comes out, it will get a TV broadcast as well.

Until the theatrical release, it will continue to appear at various film festivals, although none beyond the NYC screenings have been announced yet. I know the distributor is hopeful about doing some film festivals overseas as well.

Cd4lover -- how easy is it for you to get to Venice? (I'd love to go to that one, if their festival wants the film, and IFC wants to show it there: http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema/festival/ )

Gary -- films generally only screen at one film festival per city. Since it's screening at the New Directors/New Films Festival in NYC this month, that probably rules out Tribeca.

The premiere on the 24th just sold out, but tickets are still available for the second screening on the 26th. You can use the link in my previous post to buy tickets online.

Wow Peter, sounds great. Venice isn't that far from the place where i live...maybe 400 Km so it'd be a must see if it will be showed at La Biennale.

I hope this is screened in the UK as well. The two cinemas we have on The Rock pride themselves as often getting new releases before most of the UK (it's something to do with seeing how a film will go over in a certain demographic), but I'm not too sure if they'll get this one or not. I'll be keeping my eye out for it.

It may also go straight to broadcast on telly. This happened with another (fairly) recent release - San Francisco's Year Zero: We Were Here - which was broadcast on BBC4 on February 6th. I meant to announce it in the forum beforehand, but forgot to. (sorry!)

I suppose We Were Here may have been shown at some select cinemas in the UK - London perhaps - but it certainly never made it here. I was really happy that the BBC picked it up.

It's good to see you posting again, Peter. I'd love for some of our newer members to be able to get to know you. You are an important part of our history, our living history, after all! Love ya!

Democracy Now has done an extensive interview with the director of this stunning new doc, David France, and our own Peter Staley, prominent ACT UPer and founder of AIDSmeds, including a number of great clips.  This is, IMHO, essential viewing.  We owe our lives to what ACT UP helped to achieve, and this part of the history of the AIDS pandemic must never be forgotten.

I apologize for any redundancy.  However, the Democracy Now interview was posted only two days ago, and I don't believe the somewhat extensive clips were all shown previously in the earlier thread.

I really want to see this.  I'd go to the MOMA screening, but I have a support group meeting at the same time.

I wanted to post my thank you right here in this old thread... I saw this film on netflix tonight and was deeply moved by the courage and dedication of the Act-up movement during that dark time.. Thank you so much for your sacrifice... I will never forget.

wish i had something profound to add here, i don't

first time i watched it, i had the emotional reaction, learning a history not to long after dx

recently, thanks to netflix, i've been streaming it, sometimes just on a sidescreen, sometimes actively cross referencing details, dates, names, and have really deepened my understanding of the events and time. learned where things are at today

i'll join a2l, thanks yall
