how accurate is my test????
« en: Agosto 26, 2008, 06:18:37 am »
Hi guys.. pls reply me guys.. i wanna make sure.. 6 months ago i was in houston for bussniss trip, i know a lady hispanic 37 yrs old divorced and she has 2 kids. anyway we like each other, and we had unprotected vaginal sex for about a week 5 times. after last time we had sex by 5 days i notice very small yellowish discharge from my penis, i made all STI test all came back negative, and the doc said it shows u have some bacteria, and he gave me antibiotics for 5 days, then it cleared up. then i started freak out of anything else like HIV so i asked her many time for her status, she always replies she is all clear and she does't have anything. anyway Thanks God i didn't have any symptoms like fever or rash, i think i became more senstive for sun, when i go for tanning i got little bit sun burning, never noticce that before. anyway on week 10 from last time we had sex, and week 11 from first time, i made 3rd generation ELISA test, which came back Negative 1&2, i also made all blood check and HCV, and thanks God everything is good and clear. i really need to know how accurate my test since am in best cases 11 weeks, and worst cases 10 weeks. and have u ever guys see some1 seroconvert after 8 weeks... pls... i wanna put all this behind..

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after a risky incident. Your negative at 10 weeks past the most recent risky incident is unlikely to change, but we do follow the CDC recommendation here about testing at 13 weeks past a possible exposure in order to get a definitive answer.

To be absolutely sure I suggest you re-test. At 13 weeks the generation of the test is irrelevant. All generations of tests currently in use will give you a reliable result at that point.

However, you do need to learn from this experience. You can have intercourse with whomever you want to regardless of their HIV status. You just need to always without exception be wearing condoms. And that applies no matter how well you think you know the person or how great they look. Use a condom everytime.

Good luck with your test. I do expect you to test negative.

It is uncommon in my experience to test positive after a 6 weeks negative. But you have tested negative at 10 weeks if I am reading you correctly. So the negative at 13 weeks is virtually a slam dunk.

wanna,

Did you test at three months? Strictly speaking, only a three month negative test result is conclusive, although I do NOT expect your ten week negative to change.

Sun sensitivity has nothing to do with hiv. However, symptoms or even the LACK of symptoms will never accurately tell you your hiv status. ONLY testing will.

If you're worried about the sun sensitivity, see your doctor. It's got nothing to do with hiv.

hi guys agaain... this very important question... when CDC say the avrage for antibodies to appear in test is 25 days mostly 8 weeks. from where these figures come from, is it lab trials? or from ppl reporting... lets say some1 is not infected and got tested on week 4 and then again on week 13th, so we cant say week 4 is a clue for week 13.. ok, now lets say some1 is really infected and he tested negative on week 4 and then postive on week 6, now e can say that he produced antibodies on in between week 4 and 6.... so is that how CDC say its numbers??? and experts ppl when they say their opinion depends also on that way... pls, answer me, because i looked for an answer on the net nothing, and i didnt even see any reported casing for postive test on week 6, maybe they only report the rare and unusual cases maybe.. thanks alot..

wanna,

If I remember correctly, there have been studies done on people presenting for testing following a one-time high risk situation and they were tested weekly until they either tested positive or tested negative out to the end of the window period. Sorry, but I'm going out the door right now and don't have time to look into this further at the moment.

wanna,

Yes, it's a reputable site. That study backs up what we tell people here.

The bottom line for you is that a test at or beyond three months past the incident you're worried about will be conclusive. If you're worried that your ten week result is going to change, it's highly unlikely. However, we stick to the official window period of three month here. If you're unsure of your hiv status, go get your confirmatory test done and get it over with.
