Dentist

Hi all,

I have been reading about the case of Dr Stein (the dentist) who has allegedly been reusing needles with patients.  Now as much as I understand this is rare, especially in the western world,  my question is IF a dentist where to reuse a needle on another patient to inject anesthesia INTO the gums is this a tranmission route for HIV?

I understand how it could be for hep as it is more viable but I did not think this would be possible for HIV but the articles are saying it is?

Thanks for answering my question.

So far everything is allegations. We'll have to wait until after the investigations and the actual facts come out to even see if the allegations are even true.

Thanks, I understand.  I used to have  pretty bad phobia about this sort of thing years ago but therapy really helped me through it.  For years I have rationalised my phobia by saying, nobody re-uses medical equipment.

This article has stirred up some old emotions and thoughts.  I have the dentist in two days and don't know if I should ask him if his needle and vial are new?

I guess my question really is whehter or not it is possible to get HIV from an injection into a gum from a re-used needle and vial?

ted,

When hiv is transmitted via needles, it is only when blood has been drawn up into the syringe. This does not happen when giving pain-relieving shots into the mouth before dental procedures.

So no, you're not going to get hiv that way.

There is no harm in asking your dentist about his universal precaution procedures or asking him to open the syringe package in front of you. A good doctor or dentist will be happy to ally your fears.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!!!

Thanks for this Ann.

I do have another question and to be honest its more educational as some sites say different things.  I have read that if one is to suffer lymphadenopathy during ARS then it would be painless and therefore tender or swollen nodes cannot be attributed to HIV.

is this correct?

Ted,

There are no "typical" symptoms of ARS - and many people do not experience a single symptom of primary hiv infection.

If you're worried about your lymph nodes, first, keep your hands off them. Touching them all the time can make them sore and irritated and make them swell. Second, if they keep bothering you, see a doctor. Whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv.

Thanks again Ann, I am not worried about my lymph nodes it was more that some sites say that if you do ger swollen lymph nodes during ARS then they are non painful and others say the complete opposite.

With different sites giving out conficting information it can be quite confusing to the non-expert, as you guys seem to really know what you are talking about I just thought I woudl ask the question.

Painful or not?

Ted,

The reason you get conflicting information is the very reason I gave you earlier - there are no typical symptoms.

Some people may experience swollen lymph nodes that are painful, some may experience swollen lymph nodes that are not painful, and many people experience no swollen lymph nodes at all.

You need to stop fretting over a virus for which you have not been at risk.
