Hip Pain
« on: January 28, 2012, 11:08:19 am »
Hey Everyone,

I need some advice. I woke up last Monday with a terrible pain in my hip. It's been constant all week, and I didn't have any recent trauma to my hips or legs.

2.5 years ago, I had a fracture in the acetabulum (socket in the hip) from a bike accident. Everything appeared to heal well. My initial thought was something was acting up from that.

The doc did an x-ray, that didn't show anything out of the ordinary. The condition is perplexing him as well.

I did some research on the internet and found AVN... (Bone necrosis). Have any of you experienced this? If so, what were the initial symptoms? Did it start to hurt literally over night?

Any advice would help..

Thanks

The internets diagnostic abilities are really poor.  Once it said I had an std in my ass, I called up my boyfriend and accused him of cheating.  Turned out to be a kidney stone.

Other time the Internet told me I had something called hematomachrosis which has something to do with too much iron in your blood, turned out I had HIV.

Maybe its arthritis.  Has there been a weather change?  I've always wanted to be able to predict the weather by monitoring if my joints ached.

Good luck!

I had an MRI to rule out AVN a few years back due to hip pain.  It was negative -- I still have the hip pain from time to time -- it actually ruined my last day in Paris in 2010 because it hurt to walk.  Given everything that I did to check on a cause, I'm left thinking it is just a combo of a couple extra pounds, tennis a few times a week and getting older.
Good luck trying to find an answer, but know that not everything gets resolved.

Once I had a paper cut, and I googled "bleeding hand" and teh intranetz told me I had stigmata and was possibly the manifestation of the Second Coming.

I just turned 40 this past month... My first thought when it started to hurt was, "Great, now I'm 40 and it's all downhill from here."

The last time that I sat on my laurels though when I wasn't feeling well was after 6 months of feeling tired and icky... Turned out I had Aids... I'm trying to be a little more proactive now.

Just wondering if you exercise in a gym where you do hip abductions (that machine where you sit with your knees together, that has pads on the outside of the knee, then you push out).  The reason I'm asking is I had hip pain and mentioned it to my PA that said it sounded like bursitis... and it probably was.  It took a while, but I traced it back to hip abductions in the gym.  After laying off that machine for a few months, the pain went away entirely... and so long as I don't get on that machine, it stays away.

Could it be that you've somehow traumatized the hip without realizing it (you say you didn't injure it)?  That might cause the joint to swell, putting pressure on the bursa, resulting in a pain that feels deep inside the joint.  If so, an NSAID should alleviate the pain temporarily (like Advil or generic Ibupropen).

There is a void in the English language which, with some diffidence, we undertake to fill. Every one has been put in an embarrassing position by ignorance of the status of some woman. To call a maiden Mrs is only a shade worse than to insult a matron with the inferior title Miss. Yet it is not always easy to know the facts... Now, clearly, what is needed is a more comprehensive term which does homage to the sex without expressing any views as to their domestic situation, and what could be simpler or more logical than the retention of what the two doubtful terms have in common. The abbreviation "Ms" is simple, it is easy to write, and the person concerned can translate it properly according to circumstances. For oral use it might be rendered as "Mizz," which would be a close parallel to the practice long universal in many bucolic regions, where a slurred Mis' does duty for Miss and Mrs alike.

No hip abductions... The only leg exercise I do is bike riding (Which I've been laying off of since it's cold out)

This is exactly what Mim is dealing with.  Her hips are in constant pain.  She's asked for everything from a wheelchair to a hip replacement (even provided name and number of a doc who does them).  Her PID suspected osteonecrosis and ordered an MRI and another DEXA.  We found a new ortho (our 5th, I think) to take a look and he said her hips look "fine".  He's now thinking that because of her tight hamstrings (she has spastic diplegic CP), which has caused her petellas to relocate, her knees and hips have been compensating for who knows how long, causing the pain.  He said that earlier prescriptions of  stringent stretching regiments only served to make things worse.

Whew!  All of that to say, that just because your hips hurt, the cause may not be originating in the hips.  It may be that something else is going on and your body is compensating in such a way that your hips are affected.

I hope you can find an quick and easy solution.

Blessings!
