Nutrition in general
« on: January 12, 2008, 06:32:05 pm »
I'm looking for direction and am in hopes those here have the answers.  I have been poz for 15 years and basically move through life as if I am unaffected by the disease.  Lately I have begun to have a lot of GI and bowel challenges.  My doctor has said it is due to years of medications and has perscribed even more meds.  I'm wondering if I shouldn't be seeing a nutritionist and finding a better way to take care of my insides.  Suggestions?

From what I have been told diet is real important.  Are you doing well on that?  There certainly is no down side to eating healthy, and it has a big impact on your cardiovascular system.  I haven't looked but I bet if you searched the Nutrition & HIV forum you good get some quality ideas there.  Personally I pretty much only fresh meat and vegetables along with whole wheat bread.  I try to stay away from processed foods and soda, totally and have healthier versions of ice cream and pizza.

Better yet, see a gastroenterologist.  GI changes could be a result of meds, though they tend to arise soon after starting something new;  and dickering with your diet instead of confronting the issue heads-on could be wasting valuable weeks or months in getting to the root of a potentially more serious problem.

You didn't mention your age or any family history of GI issues.  I'm 42 and have a family hoistory of Crohn's, so I have been rattled by recent bowel changes though my GI doc has been address less dramatic possible causes first.  If you're close in age and have any family history, get in front of a GI specialist soon.
