Dear Doctor, thank you for reading my question:

I'm a 28 chinese boy from Beijing. I had sex with a whore 19 days ago.
It's my first time to have sex in my life and I have no venereal disease except
some Hirsuties papillaris genitalis for many years. I use double condom but I
found they are all broken when I finished with her, that is my pennis may
be exposed in her vagina for about 5 minutes. I remember my pennis should
have no cut.
I've got a negative result at the best hospital for AIDS in china at the 19th
day using 3 generation ELISA.
My symptoms after that were: ache on arm and back from 7th day to 12th days,
a little ache on the the whole body from 16th day to 19th day. Diarrhoea from
1st day to 5th day. Coating on the tongue is very white from 1st to now. And
there were two times I had a headache and had sweat in the night, but all recoverd
the next morning. A little itch on the whole body and face. And the temperature of
my boy is all about 36.6 C.
Then how do you think about my instance, may I be infected? Thank you very much!

Lucky, symptoms are never the way to know accurately about HIV status. There is nothing whatsoever about the ones you are reporting which are HIV specific.

Your mistake was to use two condoms. Instead of giving you additional protection, doing that actually has the effect of causing the condoms to break as you found out.

Now, until they broke you were protected. Also, HIV is not an easy virus to transmit. It is signifcantly hard to accomplish from female to male. Given that this was a single and relatively brief incident, the odds against transmission having occured are very significantly in your favor.

But of course low risk is not the same thing as no risk. So you have the right idea about getting tested. The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the smallest number of those who will seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure to HIV, IF the woman you were with is HIV+, and you don't know that for sure.

So I would suggest you get tested at 6 weeks. A negative then will be very reassuring. Then re-test at 13 weeks and assuming you test negative again, which is what I expect, then you have an all clear.

And remember only one latex condom at a time. That will provide very effective protection against HIV.

Dear Doctor:

I found some information on web state that the infection probability of single unsafe sex with an HIV+ women is
only about 0.1% while some other state that it's about 5%. So how do you think about this probability ? Thank you!

Lucky-

We don't comment on "chances" here. Once is enough if you become infected. Get tested, as Andy said, at six and thirteen weeks. It's the only way to know for sure...everytning else is conjecture and guess-work.

Also, if I read your post correctly, it appears that you used two condoms. This is not a good idea and probably resulted in your condom failure. One is plenty, combined with water-soluable lube.

Dear Doctors：

Excuse me to post again, i know it doesn't make much sense to talk about symptoms, but a strange thing really
puzzled me all these days, so i can't help to ask about this: from the 12th day after the incident to now(23th days),
my face and head have been itched all the day, especially on nose, eyebrow and the root of hair. This has never happed
before, i know it may not be caused by HIV, but i stiil want to know whether the itch on face and head is one of the
symptoms which HIV can cause possibly? Thank you!

If you still have the itchy rash you should discuss it with your doctor. The rash associated with ARS is not itchy. It is also on the torso and the arms & legs, not the face and scalp.

It sounds to me as if you were having an allergic reaction of some sort, but discuss it with your doctor for a real diagnosis.

Neither Andy nor Ann are doctors. They answer to you based on their decades of experience with HIV and counsellings and reading tons of studies for the last 20 years.

No real doctor will give you a definitive answer about your symptoms on the internet. Real doctors need to see you, talk to you, get your history, etc etc

Andy and Ann can only confirm what decades of studies have proven and they do it damn well but they can't diagnose your problems. When Andy says "symptoms are never the way to know accurately about HIV status" trust him. trust him.

Another thing. People tend to think they're the "1% that got HIV with no explanation". At the end of the story there's always been an explanation.

Sex is not punishable behavior, Lucky. It's an action in response to our most basic instincts.

Move beyond the guilt. You did nothing wrong nor anything foolish. A condom broke, that's all. Get tested at 13 weeks and stick to one condom and water-based lubricant in the future.

Dear experts, i've read the lesson of our forum just now, i found that the lessoon tells us HIV can go through the mucous membranes,
this is differernt from the informations i got before. I'm wondering does this mean that the HIV can go through the unabroken mucous membranes
on the penis and cause infection?

Yes the inner side of the foreskin if you are uncut. Not the head of the penis. Yes it can go through the membrane. That is the only places on the penis, that one can contract HIV.

Don't fret over it. Just use condoms correctly from now on. You had protected sex until the condom broke and it lessons the chance of you contracting HIV.

I've got a 27th day negative result at the best hospital for AIDS in china using 3 generation ELISA.
My doctor told me that i'm primarily ok, but the last decision should be made by the result of 6 weeks.
My health is just ok, i never catch a cold for more than 2 times every year. So, how do you think I'm
primarily ok now? thank you!! (I'll still take the test at 6 weeks following your and my doctors's advice,
but i still want to know about my state at present, excuse me)

Your state at present? Your state is nervous with HIV jitters which is an uncomfortable place to be in.

We've already gone through everything quite carefully for you. Yes, you're uncircumcized. We got that. The odds are still way in your favor against transmission having occured in this single incident.

You need to work on staying productively busy instead of indulging in scenarios to scare yourself with. When those scary thoughts come, just notice them, take a breath, let them go and get on to the next thing.

Keeping yourself busy will definitely to make the waiting time until testing go more quickly and comfortably.

I've just got a negative result at 41th days using third generation ELISA(with 2 other negative results at 19th/27th day). Andy once told me that the negative result after 6 weeks will be very reassuring while my result is only near the 6 weeks , may I be a little reassuring? Thank you!

Boy,

A negative ELISA result at three months will rule out hiv completely - including any strain or type out there.

I'm fully expecting you to continue testing negative. But do youself a favour - stop testing so often. You don't need to test again until the three month point. Stay productively busy in the meantime and the time will go quicker than you might imagine.

We have no sex relationship but she will be afraid of even a kiss on the face we have taken though i know it's not dangerous.

Boy,

You don't need to test again until the three month point because it is highly unlikely you would go on to test positive after the negative results you have had so far. Hiv is a difficult virus to transmit and more so from a woman to a man. The odds were always in your favour of coming out of this ok and it looks like you will.

You need to make sure you use condoms correctly in future. Read through the condom and lube links in my signature line. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

I'm fully expecting you to continue to test negative.

The result are:

T Helper/Suppressor Ratio: 0.74 (ref: 1-2)
T Suppressor Lymphs (CD3+CD8+) Abs Cnt: 981 (ref: 323-836)
T Helper Lymphs (CD3+CD4+) Abs Cnt: 726 (ref: 706-1125)

T Suppressor % of Lymphs (CD3+CD8+/CD45+): 36% (ref: 15%-34%)
T Helper % of Lymphs (CD3+CD4+/CD45+): 27% (ref: 30%-54%)

T Lymphs % of Lymphs (CD3+/CD45+): 70% (reference: 56%-85%)
T Lymphs (CD3+) Abs Cnt : 1893 (ref: 1027-2086)
Lymphocyte (CD45+) Abs Cnt: 2702

My T Helper/Suppressor Ratio<1 , T Suppressor Lymphs is too much and T Helper Lymphs is a little low. My regular blood
test is also indicate that i've infected by some virus.

I also test syphilis at 6 weeks and Cytomegalo,HBV,HCV after 3 months; all results is negaticve.

I have had pain in muscle and joint all over the body for near 3 months ; have rash all over the body now and than
and often feels like the ears is blocked by some thing or tinnitus for several minutes.

So, may i be cleared from HIV and what kind of problem may I have? Thank you very much!

Boy,

You are conclusively hiv negative, so what ever is going on with you has nothing to do with hiv.

As far as what IS going on, that's not for us to decide. Only your doctor can diagnose you. NOBODY can diagnose you over the internet.

Hi Excuse me for post again:

I found these words in the lesson:"The ELISA/Western blot tests can detect antibodies to all HIV-1 subtypes. Viral load tests can also detect and quantify subtypes of HIV-1. The viral load tests can also detect and quantify HIV-2.", is this mean that ELISA test can't detect HIV2? thank you!

You don't have HIV and that includes HIV-1 and HIV-2.
