Title: Are there straight Drag Queens?
Post by: mecch on May 15, 2011, 04:59:57 pm
A little late but finally caught the last season of RuPaul's Drag Race.
I really enjoyed this season.

I was just wondering if there are any good straight Drag Queens out there.  When I dated a drag queen, he took me to bars where there were all different styles of transvestites and he said a fair amount of them were straight guys.

One of the episodes on RuPaul had the "girls" dragging up some "jocks".  Didn't say they were all straight jocks but that was the implication.  One or two seemed to really enjoy it.

Also, I wonder if RuPaul could mix in a drag king or two (women doing men) with the drag queens - or would that make the weekly competitions too hard to conceptualize?

You really flunked out of Homo High, didn't you?

Straight drag queens are called "female impersonators".

"When I dated a drag queen" is all you need to know.

Right, female impersonators.  But I suppose they aren't "drag queens" per se?  I was just wondering if any young straight guys would consider themselves "drag queen" entertainers and be interested in a competition like RuPaul's show.

A couple of these guys have had children, if I am correct, so they were bi, but I don't remember anyone of them saying they were straight.

Most of them connect their gay sexuality pretty closely to their drag careers.

I wouldn't call a gay man with a child bi.  Just because you've had sex with a woman or women doesn't make you bi, considering all the gay men on these forums who've admitted to sleeping with women are for the most part patently gay.  Anyway, a "straight drag queen" is what I would term a transvestite, they have no flare for the dramatic like drag queens they simply look like (in the words of "To Wong Foo") "a boy in a dress".

I have a child -- I am definitely NOT bi-sexual (not that there is anything wrong with it).  Really, for an educated man you are prone to sweeping generalizations and over-simplified conclusions.

I have a child because I was trying to NOT be gay -- it didn't work, but I did help reinforce the old adage -- "You can get (or get someone) pregnant your first time".

I guess you didn't go to the VERY legendary Club Edelweiss (http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/crimelaw/features/1084/) back in the early 90's.

Oh dear we've established this cross reference years ago. And yes, yes, yes. The "old old" Edelweiss, etc etc. Sally's blah blah blah.

So, no young metros or transvestites or female impersonators, who are straight, want to be drag queen fabulous?

Who's talking about you dear. You're not a cross dresser.  Nor interested very much in them I would imagine.

The guys on RuPaul who had kids, so I guess they were "bi".  That better for you. Quotations. you need that? They don't.   fluid identity dearie.

Exactly!  There's the spirit.  There's a guy like that in my town, married with kids, pushing 50.  Pretty confirmedly bi - I have seen him in action with men and with women.

Just wondered if there were any young straight guys who could get into that Drag Queen showmanship.  Or if there is something that makes it pretty much a gay phenomena.

It was directly in connection to RuPaul's show.  What could keep it interesting for the future.   I liked the way they spotlighted the gender fucking Raja and was pleased that she won, for her "fresh" take.  Which isnt fresh at all since she herself says it comes from 90's club kid heritage.

Personally I thought the two other finalists were more talented and all around. And the more old style drag from "Central Florida", Alexis Mateo, was the most charming and likeable.

One of the drag queens on the show who had a kid said he was gay, not bi. He just wanted a kid. Are lesbians that have a kid bi? Better question is what's up with gay guys who date drag queens dearie? Paging doctor Freud.

Got something against Drag Queens?

He was gay, and a drag queen.  Drag Queens are a unique group of people. Since most are gay, I don't see how any gay person could have an issue with gay people dating drags.  You're trying to stir up off topic controversy?  Besides, they are fierce and fascinating people to date.

What's wrong with spring- autumn? What's wrong with S/M coupling? I had a roommate for a year, his boyfriend locked him to the radiator every weekend.

So do you think its possible to have a straight guy interested in being a drag entertainer?  And if so, why not one in competition on RuPaul?  Would spice it up a bit more than Raja.

Hasty Pudding.  But don't see any Harvard boys on RuPaul.   :o

I know in "old timey" wars the soldiers would get up drag reviews.

Love drag queens. Some of my best friends were drag queens. However most of the people they dated were tragic. Trying to soak up some of their glitter by carrying around their makeup and clothes. Devoid of personality, willing to do anything for a little attention.

Most drag queens I've known have had enormous penises.

I mean just crazy big.

hahaha  "Devoid of personality, willing to do anything for a little attention."

how sad for your little world. projecting?

No drag superstar would date a sad sack.

In the 80's and 90's it was all about uptown meets downtown, darling. I'm sure it is today.

Think Candis Cayne's character in Dirty Sexy.

The "Mystery Date" wore Sulka, Brioni, Paul Stuart. Or his RoB leather.

There are all kinds of "drag".  Remember Liz and Malcolm on his Harley?  Guess you wouldn't.

Tragic is your penchant for flame-baiting and derailing a topic. Desperate desperate, over and over, your measly dreary shade.

Why come to my tea-party to be such a miserable guest? Obviously fascinated, but so impolite.

No dearie.....  you miss the point.  your post seemed to state that because they had kids, they must be bi.  I was merely saying that this isn't true.  Having kids does not make a gay man bi-sexual.  It makes him a gay man who had sex with a woman for one reason or another, my reason was because I was 14 and didn't want to be gay (of course, one could also have a kid without ever having had sex with a woman too.....).

So.. I know you weren't talking about me, but you were seeming to make a gross (and incorrect) generalization.

So blah blah blah up your arse.

Does Barry Humphries as Dame Edna Everage count?  He's straight.  But Dame Edna is a stage character, not a way of life.  Or is she?

This topic comes up just in time to mention Esprit 2011, the Northwest's Premiere Transgender Convention, in Port Angeles, WA, May 15-22!  It's a Big Tent event welcoming everyone from transsexuals to cross-dressers!
http://www.espritconf.com/ (http://www.espritconf.com/)
I've attended briefly, but only as part of the band.  It's a surreal Glen or Glenda? experience -- quite a few straight men in drag with their wives and children attending.

Pity it couldn't coincide with the A/M Gathering.

A straight man in drag isn't the same thing as a gay male drag queen, that's apples vs. oranges so don't confuse the 2 of them, it's just NOT the same thing, at least to me it isn't  ;)

Well, that's what I'm wondering.  Does it have to be apples and oranges?

There's certainly a long tradition of straight guys getting up in drag and they can do it pretty fiercely.

Remember, I posted this cause I was wondering if it would be possible or interesting to have straight guys, and/or even drag king women - in competition for Superstar Drag Queen on a show like RuPaul.

Are there categories that cannot mix, like old school female impersonation (Charles Pierce), versus  "performance" drag - John Kelly, Joey Arias, etc etc, versus Hasty Pudding type jock drag as one off, versus soldiers' drag review, versus "characters" like Dame Edna, Marie-Thérèse Porchet, Flip Wildon's Josephine, etc etc

All in all, I thought RuPaul offerred a pretty interesting mix of contestants this year.

I'm trying to figure out if straight drags exist.  I'm with you in thinking it must be rare.  I guess we are all in agreement that straight "cross dressers" and straight "transvestites" are not what we define as "drag queens"? Or more importantly, would not define themselves as such?

I LOVE Eddie Izzard!

A few of his quotes I enjoy:

“I wanna live 'til I die, no more, no less.”

“I like my coffee like I like my women. In a plastic cup.”

“I saw something in a program on something in Miami, and they were saying, "We've redecorated this building to how it looked over 50 years ago!" And people were going, "No, surely not, no. No one was alive then!"”
