oraquick and unigold rapid testing
« on: January 16, 2012, 08:14:01 am »
Question for testing experts. After an unprotected exposure I contracted chlamydia. 1 week after I got a sore throat. 3 weeks later I had multiple tender nodes in different locations. Joint and muscle ache and shortness of breathe. The sore throat lasted about 2 months and the nodes persisted until now which is months later. I tested 6 10 12 and 15 weeks with oraquick finger and unigold finger stick test. All were nonreactive. I am not here to cause worry for others but in a situation like this with a real risk and considering the entire situation, would these test still be conclusive?

You have a conclusive negative test result. If you feel unwell see your doctor you don't have HIV.

You have reliably tested negative for HIV. You can avoid risk sexually in the future by always without exceptions using condoms every time for vaginal and anal intercourse.

Leave your lymph nodes alone. They are very sensitive to the touch. If you have a problem, discuss it with your doctor. HIV is not your issue.

That is music to my ears but not to my body body. I am not a hypocondriac by nature. And I swear I never touched poked at the lymph nodes. I've had un protected sex before stupidly enough and never experienced this. I didn't google first and then develop symptoms. I developed them before and truthfully I never knew much about hiv. Everywhere I go they say I need to come back in six months. The window period was established in 2004 because of all the advances in testing. 3rd 4th generations. But I haven't seen where rapid tests ever were modified or made more sensitive. Has anyone actually seen someone test positve on a rapid test inside of 3 months.

In an adult, a positive HIV antibody test result means that the person is infected, a person with a negative or inconclusive result may be in the “window for 4 to 6 weeks but occasionally up to 3 months after HIV exposure. Persons at high risk who initially test negative should be retested 3 months after exposure to confirm results

The exceptions for testing up to 6 months are situations in which longterm intravenous drug use is involved or a severely depleted immune system due organ transplant or treatment for cancer.

Your negative result is reliable. If you feel unwell or have troublesome symptoms, discuss them with your doctor. Swollen lymph nodes can happen for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with HIV.

I've read that before too. I saw on a site from ucsf that six months is recommended. I apoligize for being contradicting. Believe me I don't want hiv.but if someone tested neg as I have and tested pos at 6 months would this forum want to know about it? If it weren't for me wanting anonymous testing I wouldve got the blood draw at 6 weeks.

I don't have anything more to add. As far as I am concerned you have reliably tested negative.

What you choose to do beyond now is strictly up to you, but as far as HIV is concerned, whether you believe it or not, you're negative.

If someone tested negative as I have and tested pos at 6 months. Would this forum want to know about it? Believe me I don't want hiv I'm not insisting I have it. But multiple tender nodes in multiple locations for months sounds like pgl to me. And while swollen lymph nodes are common, pgl is not. I really do pray that I am neg and this is just a big wake up call.

quest,

Were you treated for the chlamydia infection and if you were, were you re-tested for chlamydia to make certain the treatment was successful? Chlamydia can sometimes cause swollen glands.

Either way, you need to discuss your glands with a doctor. Whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv. You are conclusively hiv negative.

You do not have hiv!

Thanks for all of your replies. Ann to be honest I never did follow up to make sure I was neg for chlamydia after the fact. I will check again to see if the chlamydia was stubborn enough to stick around after antibiotics. Maybe even a case of Reiter's? I respect everyone of your opinions. I feel like one of those goofy posters that keep going and going like the energizer bunny.  But most of them don't have a risk, an std.

Quest,

Yes, Reiter's is a possibility. Go see a doctor.

Just remember that you are conclusively hiv negative - and concentrate on other possibly causes of your problems. Good luck sorting it all out.

Ann,    Just an update. Ruled out chlamydia. Tested for different infectious causes for the painful glands and found nothing.  I'm working out of town but I guess ill have an ultra sound and a biopsy when I get home. My doctor and the aids counselor told me I need to test to 6 months. Also all info on the net about rapid test and their flaws. Is that true or false info. I guess I  just wanted to hear you say I'm clear again. I need something to counter all the negative feedback.

Whatever is going with you physically and symptomatically, HIV is not the problem.

Anyone who counsels you to continue testing for HIV is not someone I would use as a resource about HIV.

You're negative. Period.

Good luck with getting the problem sorted out and properly treated.

quest,

The main flaw in rapid tests is that they can give you a false positive result. NOT false negative when preformed in the correct window period - which is THREE months. Three. Count 'em. One, two, three. NOT SIX!!!! I wish I knew why some people who should know better insist on clinging to the outdated six month window. It's been three for years now.

I hope you realise that poking and prodding your glands all the time to see if they're swollen can irritate them and make them swollen and sore. Keep your mitts off and continue to investigate other possible causes, because whatever is going on is NOT hiv.

You are conclusively hiv negative. You do NOT have hiv!

No Ann. No poking no prodding. I've also recently developed sharp pains in my hands and feet but I'm sure its all related. Thanks for your replies.

It may all be related but for sure it has nothing to do with HIV. You should be talking with your doctor. Not us.

HIV is not your problem. Period.
