Title: New Labs and Kidney function update
Post by: WillyWump on December 28, 2010, 05:39:42 pm
Drumroll please....

CD4- 842, 45% still UD.  ;D

Kidney function is still decreased at 72 (1.2). Doc says they havent gotten worse, but havent gotten any better. She will continue on with the Tuvada for another 3 months and in the meantime run some tests to see if I am able to take Epzicom and most likley switch me if Kidney fucntion does not increase before the next labs.

Interesting thing...she said NOT to eat red meat the day before drawing blood because the test can pick up the cow's kidney function and skew the results. WHAT? sounds like bunk to me, but hey she's the doc.

Also said I need to continue drinking as much water as I can to assist my kidneys at least 64oz/day. Water is so boring.

Oh, She also gave me a grape sucker for my CD4 increase. I flaunted in everyone's face in the waiting room as I left.

-W

PS- I asked her about once daily dosing of Pez/Norvir rather than my current twice daily and she said not now but she would consider it in the future.

Congrats Will!

What is your percentage (CD4)?

You're doing great on those CD4 counts!

Hi Will

Well doen on the CD$'s and your UD results, keep up the good work.

As for the kidney results, anything below 60 indicates you have some Kidney damage going on, so get it sorted now before you get too low...mine is way below 60, hence the reason my Doc changed my meds to Reyataz and Kivexa...he took me off the Tenofovir, before he ran out on me.. ;)

And stop flaunting your suckers at people in the waiting room...no-one likes a show-off

Stay well.

Awesome work Willy!  You're a proud member of the 800 club!  (Suck it Pat Robertson and your 700 club!)   ;D

I got half of my labs back yesterday since starting meds, all good but still waiting to see if the magic UD is here yet.   ::)

Congrats on the numbers!  I hope the kidney numbers improve for ya.  How common is kidney impairment when taking Truvada?  When I've read about it, many sites say minorities have more issues with this.  This is one of the drugs I've chosen for my regimen.  Once you start the meds, they start checking the kidneys with tests other than the BUN and Creatinine?

And which minorities would those be Teddala?

Congradulayshenz, Wilhelmina.  Huge percentage, you beat my 42%.  Wishing ya well on them kidneys.

Tedderz, as far as I'm aware neither you nor the Wumpette have a minority membership. That was quite a random comment?

Good numbers Will and all the best going forward.  With statistics for just about everything these days including the meds we take, the first generation of humans ever to do so, and their effects on people broken down by race, gender, age, etc.  these numbers can be helpful toward making improvements down the road in their efficiency and with side effects and that's the best reason for keeping vigilant in that regard.  I remember the thinking by at least some in the HIV community once was that the drugs we were taking were geared toward having the greatest benefit to men as opposed to women, as I suppose the drug trials were geared that way.  The breakdown of the effects of the meds on Whites, Blacks or Asians I can't speak about professionally though the onset of certain diseases and medication side effects are more prevalent in some communities with many factors reasoning into that equation.

When I've read about Truvada and kidney issues, I often come across where people with pre-existing kidney issues or blacks and hispanics have more kidney issues with Truvada.  Am I reading incorrect info?  If it is true, is it due to the higher rate of kidney problems in blacks and hispanics to begin with?  Or, is there not much difference between races?

Now Teddy, there's no need to get uptight about it.

We were only asking. :)

I remember the thinking by at least some in the HIV community once was that the drugs we were taking were geared toward having the greatest benefit to men as opposed to women, as I suppose the drug trials were geared that way.
the vast majority of most medicinal studies have been geared towards testing on and for men. It's just always been that way; and it has been severely unfair to women for years and years affected not only by HIV but heart, cancer, liver, diabetic issues etc. (the list is endless). Of course as the HIV epidemic in America affected gay men first and foremost, most studies/testing have been done (and still are done) on that segment of society.

emeraldize has a thread (CALL TO EASY ACTION - US-BASED FORUM MEMBERS ONLY http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=35682.msg444154) about this disparity and an opportunity to encourage the US government to place more emphasize on testing and treating women with HIV. Hurry though if you can help in this way as the commenting section is closed after Dec 31, 2010.

Its the additional creatinine used in the test that she's concerned about regarding the red meat. Not sure it would make much difference, unless you eat the whole cow.

Will, let me know how things go regarding your kidneys.  I get concerned about this from time to time, since I'm on Truvada, and also have diabetes.  I try to drink a lot of water, to keep things flushed.

Great numbers other than that.  Congrats!

Great numbers Will.

Now, first, if you're going to flaunt you sucker in front of the entire room, remember to video it.

Second, where would you like me to send you a nice supply of yellow hankies?

HUGS and NEW YEAR SNUGGLES,

Mark
