She is HIV Positive
« on: July 24, 2017, 10:07:51 am »
I recently had sex with a lady who i later discovered she was HIV Positive. After an evening of drinking, we had sex without protection. Waking up in the morning we immediately made arrangements to go test for HIV together and my results came back HIV Negative and Her results were HIV Positive.

I immediately went to the emergency room where i was given PeP and i have been on the treatment for 2 weeks now and i drink it religiously although the side effects are terrible I have tried reading up on PeP and its track record and i have found myself filled with guilt, paranoia and self hate.

What are my chances? i had my 1st dosage of the medication with 72 hours after i was at risk.

Regards
Azola

Drink it?

Anyhow side effects are mild and settle after a few days, if you are feeling ill see your doctor so they can treat whatever it is and help you.

You took PEP within the required time frame so continue taking it as prescribed and  test. Test 6 & 13 weeks post finishing PEP in the meantime live your life as normal. No amount of worrying or reading is going to change the outcome, its pointless waste of time.

Also remember to test or other easier to transmit STI's when you do test for HIV.

Condoms! Also keep in mind that testing with someone just shows the status from 3 months ago so its not a replacement for using a condom.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

Hello,

I completed taking my PeP treatment 2 days ago and i went to the local clinic and they did another finger prick test. The results came back negative again. I don't know if i should get excited as yet because i know of the window period.

Anyhow i just wanted to provide an update. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed as i will want to confirm my latest results in 2 months time.

Thank and Enjoy your day

PEP has an excellent record of preventing HIV and you will most likely come out of this OK. You still need to test and it is pointless until the appropriate times that Jim has advised. A confirmed negative result is at 13 weeks.
