Night Sweats
« on: August 03, 2008, 09:42:55 pm »
OK, I have never had these before and I startted to get them a couple of months ago when I was having some unexplained fevers. Now I have no fever but the sweating has returned and I am getting more than irritated to say the least. Does anyone have a solution to this or an idea how to get this to stop?

I appreciate any ideas anyone has or can shed a little light on t he subject.

THANKS

Hey Newlife,
What are your numbers like?

When I hear of someone having night sweats without some reason, it usually begs the question of where that person's CD4s and viral loads are.

Regardless whether your counts are good or not so good, I would speak to the doctor about this.

It could be nothing, but the doc should be made aware of it.

HUGS,

Hi Newlife,

It is kind of scary to wake up and be sopping wet. I used to have to change my clothes and bed linens as it was as though I had taken a shower in my clothes and then gone to bed without toweling off.

I would turn the ceiling fan on high, and not be under any kind of covering and still wake up with my face plastered to the pillowcase.

Like Mark said, what are your CD4s and viral loads? Are you on any medications?

My night sweats stopped after about a week after I started taking meds making me and my Dr very happy..

Make sure you let your Dr know....

I was not on anything and became pretty ill. I went into the hospital in mid June with a T cell count of 10 and a VL of 55,000. I am on a new drug regimen now of Truvada, Lexiva, and Norvir. Wed I will have been on this for 6 weeks and still having horrible side effects. I definitely will be mentioning this to my Doctor when I go in for a blood draw next week.

Thanks for you input guys.

Sorry I don't have a solution other than keeping a change of clothes and linens handy.
I have night sweats frequently. I usually just sleep with my moist clothes and flip the pillow over. Unless its uncomfortably wet. then you got to got through the hassle of getting up.

Hey there Wendy,

Yeah that is what i have been doing but was getting tired of the wet sheets so now I have been sleeping on great big soft bath towels and since it is so damn hot just a light sheet. Lot easier to wake up and flip a new towel and sheet on the bed in the middle of the night, sometimes 2 or three times. As far as the pillows go, thank god Ia m a pillow person and have 5 piled on my bed so I just change from one to another. I just wish I new what was causing this all of a sudden and what I can do to lessen it.

Hey Newlife,

OK, that answers one of my questions. With a CD4 of 10, it is no wonder you are having night sweats.

It may take some time for that to correct itself, so try to be patient. (I know, easier said than done.)

Also, you say its very warm where you live. This is probably contributing to the sweats. Make sure you keep you water intake up. No need to get dehydrated along with everything else.

I am on a similar regimen to yours. I take Lexiva with the Norvir boost and Combivir, which is a combo drug with AZT and Epivir.

Truvada, also a combo drug, is a very good nuke and is widely used.

What type of side effects are you having? I would guess nausea and diarrhea.

For the nausea, try sniffing sliced lemons. No, I'm not kidding. It really does help, or at least it does for me.

Back in the day when I started meds, I was taking Crixivan, which had to be taken on an empty stomach. So, I also took the rest on an empty stomach. AZT and empty stomachs are not the best combination.

At any rate, the sliced lemons really did help me.

For diarrhea, Imodium can help, as can increasing the fiber in your diet.

Of course, anything like this should be discussed with the doctor.

This was just a stab in the dark, but I hope it helps.

HUGS,

Mark

Having night sweats was one of the worst ever aspects of AIDS, for me.   As Mark says, hopefully as your numbers improve, this will lesson and possibly stop altogether.

I used to sleep on a beach towel, and I kept a blow dryer plugged up beside my bed.   I would wake up in the middle of the night, drenched and freezing cold, and turn on that warm blow dryer to heat me up enough so that I could get up and deal with it.

Best of luck to you, and keep us posted on how you're doing Newlife.

hugs,
Alan

This is odd, the night sweats are much less but now when I do get them they are in odd isolated areas. Like around my neck or a circle on my side or on my chest. Nothing like they were before thank God! Has anyone else ever had this crazy behavior?

When you stated odd isolated areas, my mind went on a different road. I 'roam' the hose at night, and have three sleeping spots. My bed, the recliner and the couch. I have discovered that I never have sweats in the recliner, and only have woke up a few times on the couch with a slightly damp head and neck..

the bed howerver, is where I sometimes have total body sweats, or I wake up and my arms are dripping, and around my neck, or the pillow is damp from the back of my head and neck...weird

Certain areas of the body are prone to let off body heat more than others.
My night sweats can be just my head/hair and chest.
