just need reassurance
« on: December 31, 2008, 11:10:58 am »
My initial concern came after I received unprotected oral sex 28 days ago.  From all I read it wasn't something to worry about.  It got me thinking back tho, and I remembered having unprotected sex twice and never getting tested. I started freaking out and got tested the next morning.  The results came back just a bit ago and were negative for HIV.  Can I assume I am in the clear? I will most likely get tested either way after 3 months from this latest incident, but just wanted some input. thanks!

milk,

As long as you tested three months or more past your last incident of unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, your test is conclusive. You do not have hiv.

Getting a blowjob is NOT a risk for hiv infection and you don't need to test over it.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

The two incidence were both 3-5 years ago, I was stupid for even doing it without a condom.  I wasn't thinking of the consequences and after I'd freaked out about this latest incident it made me think back to those two. I have a gf who means a lot to me and after realizing i could have contracted it years ago would almost definately mean she would have it... I felt awful.  This has been a wake up call and I don't even wanna have sex with a different girl, I've been living in fear the last month and its just not worth it.  Thanks for the quick reply!

just wondering, after 3-5yrs there would be no doubt in my results? If I had it the lab would have seen it, right?  I take Bactrim, don't know if that makes a difference. thanks

milk,

The window period for hiv testing is three months. You've tested reliably hiv negative far outside the window period. You do not have hiv.

sorry, just thought I saw somewhere that it can go undetectable after a while.  Does taking other meds cause more false-positives do to the confusion of certain antibodies?

Antibodies don't go to undetectable levels, viral loads can with those that are on HAART.  You are conclusively negative.
